I wouldn't think you would lose your stuff if you put the original drive back in. There is a chance that on formatting the new drive the PS3 make assign that as it's 'new one and only HDD'. If your save files are the most important thing to back up you could just try manually copying the non copy-protected ones to USB before switch the HDDs out. That process is tedious any annoying though cos unlike music or moves the PS3 gives not option to copy multiple save files at once. I recently backed up about 70 Fallout New Vegas saves once by one. I just set my TV to split screen broadcast TV and PS3 so watched TV while.
My PS2 has powered notebook style external harddrives just from USB before, not sure what that issue was about.
Finally installed my new 500GB hard drive, and successfully restored all of my files, saves, and info onto the new drive. But not without one last headache; the screws holding my old drive were worn out, requiring the use of several tools until a pair of pliers managed to pry them out of the enclosure. Cue then over five hours of restoring the data, but it's all there thankfully.
Now I just have to wait for the damn store to get back on so I can download the free games, redeem the PSN+ card, the Cecil costume for Dissidia, the MK online pass, the LA Noire exclusives, and anything else I might be forgetting.
Also got to return this shit back to Best Buy and Radioshack. Phew.

I stripped the screws off of my original 60g PS3 HD cage. I called them and they sent me a new one free. I eventually ripped that shit apart with pliers to use as a spare drive for my laptop.
Yeah, the screws they use are horrible. Couple years back when my PS3 YLOD'd 3 times (they'd 'fix' it, send it back, it'd YLOD within a week and so on until they replaced the BD drive entirely and it's been good ever since), I continually had to swap the old 60GB and new 320GB drives (get the system, put the new drive in, it breaks, put the old drive in, repeat). Every time I swapped them I'd manage to half-ruin the screw, didn't matter that the screwdriver fit it pretty well or anything. If they hadn't replaced the screw each time I would've been uh... Screwed.
XBL Marketplace is up for me at the moment (I'm in Taiwan at the moment, though I doubt that makes a difference).
That being said, I will totally ignore the fact if it'll let me get on the End-of-the-World Doom Train. Evangelicals look like they're having an awesome time, I want to ride too!
For a second I thought I was looking at a Mistakes of Youth comic, and if that was the case I'd just have to kill myself right now.
I just googled that. It was about as funny as a Fred Basset strip. And now I hate you.
Just a general internet hint:
If someone says "I thought that was X that I was looking at, and if it was, I'd have had to kill myself", your best course of action is probably not to google it.

If any one comes across this and thinks "Oh what is Goatse Industries?"
Agreed on THAT WHICH SHALL NOT BE GOOGLED. And yeah, I typically don't google stuff like this, but for once, my curiosity got the better of me. I just had to know.
Has it been that long? Anyway...how many days left until the End of May? I really wanted to get some stuff off the PSN since my birthday is this Sunday.
So, I got my email a couple days ago, saying that I should enter my email to get a code for the free identity theft protection that Sony is giving away. I entered my email, clicked submit and waited. Fast forward to a couple minutes ago, and I just received an email containing my code to activate my free identity theft protection. I click on the link provided and Firefox barks about the site not being secure. Looking at the link, it's something like http://playstation-email.com/WHAAAARRGARBLE where "WHAAAARRGARBLE" is supposed to be something to pass to the web server indicating who I am. That then redirects me to https://www.allclearid.com/sony, which is where Firefox barfs all over itself.
A little more research shows that http://playstation-email.com is owned by these guys: http://www.innovyx.com/index.php (apparently an email marketing firm or something) and one of their clients is Playstation. So, it may not entirely be Sony's fault and it may not be the marketing firm's fault, but really? Even if this "service" is free (because Sony had their heads up their asses in the first place), do I really trust an identity theft protection company that can't un-fuck their own SSL certs? Fuck no.
Edit: I obviously didn't read the last page, but still. Un-fuck your SSL certs.

I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my PS3 to a 500gb drive or save a little cash and go with a 320... hmmm.. decisions decisions. I'm trying to figure what the chances are that I would actually fill either?
Between the free PS3/PSP games, the discounted/free PSN+ games, and the upcoming PSP Remaster titles, not to mention the allegedly free movie downloads, I'd say play it safe and get the 500gb.
I installed mine last night, and I'm perfectly ready to burn up my bandwidth once that fucking store goes up.
So...is it worth signing up for the identity protection or not? Is it free forever if you do?
It's free for a year. And why not sign up for it? It's free, so it's not like it'll hurt.
As for HDD sizes, my 320GB still hasn't filled up despite the fact that I've got all my games installed on it and a lot of PSN games (PS3, PSP and PS1). But 500GB might be a safer bet anyway, having lots of extra space is always nice.
I got my email from the id theft protection service Sony is giving us... but it's like, they want me to put everything about myself on the internet to enroll in the service. Isn't that kind of ironic? Especially because I've got them associated with the chucklefucks who gave us the reason to have this thread.
It seems like the best protection would be blank page with a "Just Logout" button.
e~ Does anyone know much about this service? I feel like I'm staring down the barrel of a McCaffee / Norton level anti-id theft service.

I got the same e-mailed and signed up myself. Your claim that they want "everything" is a bit of an exaggeration as the only personal information they ask for is your Name, Address, Date of Birth, and a phone number of your choosing(in case they need to contact you, according to them). Nothing that could do great damage if leaked, as we are all thinking that them now being associated with Sony will lead to the HQ going up in flames, and much better than what Experian(?) was asking for, my social. Not cool.
Given what information they wanted and reading what kind of protection their offer, I was good enough for me to trust them for a legit free service.
Experian is a credit agency. The reason they require your SSN is because they use that to verify who you are in their credit systems. They're the last people in the world that would bother stealing someones personal information, as they already have access to all your info. If you ever have to get your credit checked, or need to verify your own credit scores, Experian is one of the companies you go to.

For Japan-based players, Sony will also be offering a "Welcome Back" package.
PS3 owners will be able to select two free titles from the following:
The Last Guy
Loco Roco!! BuuBuu Cocoreccho!

Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida or2 (What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2)

I'm guessing the PS Store will come back up on sunday/monday.
Hmm, if we get downloads per account, rather than per PS3 I'm looking forward to claiming my free EU, American and JPN games! The Last Guy and Hustler King, Dead Nation and Infamous, Super Stardust HD. Fantastic.

so guys.. how easy is it to install a new hard drive in the PS3? I've got a BC 80 GB one and we could really use some more space than 80 GB. What all is lost in the transfer process?

Nothing if you back it all up.
The process is super easy, unless you tried to do it like the earlier one with copying stuff to a PC. Pretty much connect a drive, backup, remove drive. Shut off PS3, unscrew panel, unscrew drive (easy to strip screws), and add new one, restore.

Do you have something to back it all up on? Any FAT32 drive should be good, though Prof Snugglesworth apparently had some problems with the one he tried. I just used my old 80GB iPod and the backup feature worked perfectly.
The backup function backs everything but trophy data up, so as long as you sync your trophies first, you won't lose a thing.
Just put your new HDD in a USB enclosure and back it up to that. Then remove it from the enclosure, take the old HDD out and put the new one in the PS3. Nothing should be lost.

Do you have a source for those instructions? Everything I've read indicated that you need 3 HDD's to perform a backup/restore when installing a new HDD.
HDD1 - The disk currently installed in the PS3
HDD2 - FAT32 external to store the backup and to restore from
HDD3 - New disk to install in the PS3

Someone in the industry thread posted how he knew a guy in college who claimed to be part of Anonymous that ended up getting expelled for child porn.
That was actually me. Did not expect to see a comic put it so blatantly.

No! Nonononononono. No. DON'T go there.
That's right, we do have less than a week before that vague "deadline." Maybe they'll meet it, maybe they won't. Who knows.
