You can activate him as soon as you get him. After getting the IFF, you can go to two planets before Things Start To Happen. This is enough time to do the Geth's loyalty mission and one other if you have any left.
I humbly suggest leaving Tali's loyalty until you can take the geth with you. It's fun.
I was a little sad to find just how much taking Legion along for Tali's loyalty mission does add, because it's a decent amount, but saving her loyalty mission that long means she's a lot less useful for a great deal of the game, and she's one of my regular squadmates.
Still probably worth it, as there are some really good bits of dialogue.

I took Legion to Tali's loyalty the first time, as well as doing about 3 other loyalty missions and a lot of side quests including getting very drunk on the citadel. Needless to say most of my crew was dead and then I didn't send anyone to escort Chakwas so she died as well.
I've learnt my lesson now.

It's a shame because Legion is such an interesting character. I really do wish I had more time. On a side note, I just finished my second play through and got everyone through it alive. I started going with Legion and Grunt, man that's one hell of a team. Incendiary ammo + widow = awesome.
I can blame that on the console players, right? Wasn't the acquisition of certain squadmates restricted so discs didn't have to be swapped out all the time or something?

There's also additional dialogue if you take Legion on Tali's recruitment mission. But since you only have two missions after the IFF before the clock starts ticking it means you have to take either an unloyal Tali or Legion on the big mission or others will die.
Also you can flesh out Legion's character a bit by saving all the N7 missions until after you have him. Every time you talk to him after every mission - even dinky little N7 ones - he'll tell you more about himself and the Geth and what they're doing out in space. As well as his thoughts on the Morning War.
After you hear Legion's take on the Morning War, you should totally come back to this thread and start a discussion about who was right: Quorian or Geth.
It's the Geth.

Oh, I get it. Like 'two in the blue, one in the poo.'

This isn't true. If you do all loyalty missions before the Reaper IFF, save for Tali's, you should be able to take Legion to the Flotilla and do its loyalty mission.

How you gonna do all three missions after the IFF mission before bad stuff happens?
I've never understood the supposed moral dilema about the Geth/Quarian conflict.
From a morality standpoint I don't really see an arguement.
The Geth are a sentient race and the Quarians tried to exterminate them.
The Quarians done fucked up twice. Both by creating a sentient race and then trying to exterminate it.
Most people inunverse dont acknowledge the geth as anything more than constructs.
For anything to change for the geth, things would have to change for basically all AI, because all AI is treated pretty much how the geth are, and because of that..the rare AI to pop up, outside of EDI, tends to be homicidal.

The Quarians done fucked up twice. Both by creating a sentient race and then trying to exterminate it.
They tried to shut it all down because they were afraid of what a newly sentient race of machines could potentially do to their society. Would they be morally corrupt? Would they be hell-bent on destroying the Quarians? Would Quarian society collapse if their machines rebelled full-scale?
The quarians never wanted the Geth to become sentient in any way. The geth awakening came unexpected and could become a threat to everyone on the planet so the Quarians saw it safest to simply deactivate them instead of "hoping for the best". Fearing and wanting to get rid of A.I was kind of the galaxy standard anyway
Of course in the end this was a self fulfilling prophecy because when they tried to deactivate them all hell broke lose and the Geth slaughtered the Quarians, exterminating soldier and civilian alike in a planetwide extinction attempt. The Geth were extremely cold and ruthless as they scoured the planet of Quarians.
Were the quarians right in trying to shut down the Geth? No, probably not. Were the Geth justified in almost exterminating an entire species as a response? No, probably not.
The only side of the Argument we have in regards to Geth being "cold and ruthless and scouring the planet of Quarians " is from pissed off Quarians who have been living in ships for 300 years.
No one knows how the war went on, except the Geth, who due to their nature, probably will not let stored information be corrupted by bias.
Maybe we can deduce from the fact that billions of Quarians lost their lives in the war and only a few million survived that the Geth were extremely meticulous in destroying not only resistance but just about anyone in their path
Maybe we can deduce from the fact that billions of Quarians lost their lives in the war and only a few million survived that the Geth were extremely meticulous in destroying not only resistance but just about anyone in their path
Or maybe the fact that Quarians deployed nuclear weapons against the Geth on their own planets had something to do with the die off, too.
I always thought the post-apocalypticness of Tuchanka was incredibly fascinating and not explored enough in the games. like instead of the aliens in Fallout being hostile, they give you a bunch of shit in return for fighting some bugs and now you have to adjust to it all
Drell have a similar situation, but because they are not a completely awful species they can adjust to it
i kinda wanted tuchanka to look like a blasted hawaii
with all the stuff about the semi-sentient carnivourous plants, super-storms and deadly predators around plus the reptilian form i thought their home would look more tropical, like jacob's loyalty but nuked to hell and back
instead it just looked a bit fallout-ey. ah well. would have liked to explore more of it though. make it more of a hub
Oh, no, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the actions in the the war by either side are morally good but that's kind of always an issue with total war.
I sympathize with the Quarians in the sense that they lost nearly everything but when you attempt to exterminate an entire species?
You damn well better either be successful or be prepared for reprecussions that "severe" doesn't even come close to describing.
Maybe we can deduce from the fact that billions of Quarians lost their lives in the war and only a few million survived that the Geth were extremely meticulous in destroying not only resistance but just about anyone in their path
My deduction is that the Morning War was over literally in one morning when the Geth, unbeknownst to the Quarians, had quietly seized control of all planetary strategic weapons arsenals and launched when the Quarains tried to shut down all of the Geth. The Geth's control over the strategic arsenal was tenuous, and the Geth could not ask for a surrender without tipping their hand and losing control of the arsenal. So the Geth just launched thinking that it was the only way to save their species.
I find it difficult to believe that the Morning War went on for any length of time because if it had, the Quarians would have had time to get an SOS to the Citadel. But there's never any mention of A) Council intervention or severe resentment from the Quarians for the Council having let 95% of their race perish in Geth deathcamps. Even the Reapers took months or years to quell entire planetary populations.
Although the Quarians are probably the worst infantry in the entire galaxy. So that might've helped the Geth win a conventional war so fast that the Council races didn't have time to react.

Didn't the council basically tell the Quarians to fuck off because they shouldn't have created AI in the first place and then shut down their embassy.
The quarian infantry didn't have the hazmat suits and puncture concerns back then.
"They pleaded for help from the Citadel Council, but were denied aid and stripped of their embassy as punishment for creating an AI. "
Quarians are basically bitter space assholes.
Every time we see Quarians fight in ME2 they are wiped out to a man long before infection becomes an issue. Their best marines lasted five minutes on the Alarei.
BEST MARINES
FIVE
MINUTES
Seriously... worst infantry ever.
Also, I thought the Council stripped the Quarians of their status after the war was over. And the denial of aid was more aid to help the migrant fleet post-evacuation. But the Council actually stood by and did nothing while 95% of the Quarian population was wiped out in a prolonged conflict?
I wonder if the asshole Turian Counselor back then pulled a "Ah yes. The 'Geth'. We have dismissed this claim."
So, the "Super-ultimate-collector's-edtion" of ME3, what do you think it will consist of? What would you like it to consist of?
They have a model Normandy for sell on the Bioware site, so that seems off the table when it comes to a collector's edition, but there still has to be some big thing to go with it, personally, I'm hoping for medals.
I have this idea in my head that they could design the collector's edition box to look like a medal box, and maybe it could have like the "Star of Terra" and the "Long service medal" and of course the "Medal of honor" inside it, in addition to all the standard things, like an art-book, and making-of bonus discs.
Here's how Horizon should have gone:
Ashley: "What the fuck, you're alive? What happened?"
Shepard: "Cerberus resurrected me, and now I'm fighting the Collectors."
Ashley: "Wait, you're working for Cerberus now? What the hell is wrong with you?"
Shepard: "Not working for them, using their resources to defend our colonies."
Ashley: "And you're fine with even that association?"
Shepard: "People are in trouble, and nobody else cares. I'll do what I have to do. *pause* I could use your help, too." (possibly a Charm/Intimidate option for the more satisfactory outcome)
Ashley: "I have responsibilities to a lot of people, Shepard. I can't just abandon them and run off with you. But . . . good luck."/"Sounds to me like Cerberus has you controlled pretty well. Get out of here, Shepard. You're not the person I helped save the Citadel."
That way, Ashley/Kaiden are unavailable for the suicide mission (and thus definitely available for ME3), but the scene isn't so stupid.
Just beat the game. Did all the dlc except Arrival, which I'm going to do next. Was not expecting that last fight at all, which is great because this thread spoiled the hell out of me (i didn't think I'd get the game so was just reading it for entertainment... Then the dragon age 2 gets you free me2 thing plus what I had been reading made me get both games and all the dlc).
Oh haha, looks like Tali is the only one that died. serves her right.

This would have been so much better. Oh man, everything about Horizon was stupid, but honestly, Shepard was the stupidest. You've been dead for 2 years, and have just reunited with your old-comrade/best-friend/lover. And what does Shepard say to them? "It's good to see. It's been too long." Or something equally stupid.
Really? Really? That's what you have to say to someone who thought you were dead for the past 2 years?
Also, everyone should have freaked the fuck out at the sight of Shepard, they shouldn't have been so damn nonchalant about it.

I'll take a linear game any day of the week for exactly this reason....
Yeah after multiple playthroughs I really don't like how late Legion shows up.
Especially since he has all those lines for the earlier missions that don't get used.
They do if you edit your savegame or something to get him in there earlier. Disclaimer: I do not recommend this. Don't blame me if you manage it and then the game crashes.

Legion mentions how the Geth have spent the intervening years cleaning up radiation.
I thought it had been established that the Volus are the space Jews.
Quarians are obviously Space Gypsies, so that means the Geth are... Minister Frollo?
