I'm attempting to buy extra surprise presents for my wife on my lunch breaks, and so far it hasn't gone well at all. Yesterday there were gale-force winds and rain was coming down sideways, and after making the mile trek into the city centre to get to the shop I wanted I realised I'd left my wallet at home and had to turn around and come back. I was soaked to the bone, my bag was drenched, and my shoes sodden and squelching. And all for nothing.
Today I'm making another attempt and, after coming prepared with my raincoat, umbrella, waterproof walking boots, and spare pair of jeans, the rain has stopped.
So I'm going to look a right berk walking through the city centre in my wet-weather gear with the sun out and shining.
The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin
I've always hated that song Last Christmas because it makes no sense. I gave you my heart, then you gave it away. What, is the heart now a commodity? Are hearts now fungible in that they can be traded with other hearts with no regard for which heart it is? And what happens to the guy who has no hearts? How does he get it back? It's just....ARGH
The older I get, the less important christmas becomes for me. I know this isn't just a "boo holidays," sentiment because I actually still enjoy thanksgiving with people.
Syphyre the concept of giving someone your heart is a pretty common device in songwriting and is far from the biggest problem with "Last Christmas"
It's not the "giving your heart to someone else" line that gets me about that song. Yes, I know that's insanely common in songwriting. What annoys the heck out of me is the "you then give it away" part. That line for some reason makes me mad in completely illogical ways, but there it is. And yes, I also agree that the song as a whole needs to be buried.
The signal to noise ratio of TV programming is the same as it ever was. There's just 10x more junk to wade through to find whatever interesting tidbits. Which is why I let my TV watching friends tell me what the good stuff is

I love M-W's ask the editor. They have so many good interesting features about language.
