It was really fun in an absurd over the top way. It's somewhat rare these days that I actually was annoyed at the end of the demo that there wasn't more to play.
I will not, however, be buying the game at launch. Just from the demo I'm going to guess the game itself is going to be extremely short. It's gonna be a $20 or less title for me. Plus I suspect it's going to have some insanely bullshit achievements.

I know what you mean. Even though I preordered it already, if reviews are "meh" I'll cancel and get it 2 months later for $20.
Seems to be a mixture of interactive cutscenes, on rails shooter and 3rd person brawler, sprinkled with over the top ridiculousnes. I can get behind that. Really liked the demo.
Well, that was a mix of like 80% of everything I hate about video games. And Japan. I applaud those who enjoy this, but fuck me. Did not enjoy it, in even a "yay! It's so ridiculous!"
Anyway, has anybody tried setting down the controller during QTE sequences and seeing if they win by default like that one guy said?
Alright, I went back and failed every input. A vast majority actually don't have any sway on the outcome of the QTE. Failing some do result in your life draining and then dying or simply taking a hit to the health bar. For me, this means one of 2 things:
1) You are possibly graded at the end of each Episode on if you completed all of the QTE inputs.
or
2) They simply didn't put all of the fail animations in the demo so they simply made some of the QTEs have no consequence for failure.
Yeah I'm digging this, mainly because it's SO different than anything else out there. I'm not really in the anti-QTE camp, to me it's just another way to play a game. I don't know how you'd make a game this over-the-top without it.
I'm... not sure what to think as of right now. My first instinct is that this isn't for me, but considering all they showed were two short boss battles and next-to-none of the 'regular' gameplay, I feel like I don't have enough to 'properly' judge it. It seems like a novel concept (basically revisiting "Ninja Blade" in an anime structure with Japan's answer to Kratos and an overflowing of so much SHONEN that even Kamina would be all 'dude, chill out'), and the art direction IS really striking and honestly pretty beautiful, but I'm not sure this is really the Next Leap Forward for the action-brawler the way "Bayonetta" was.
I'll probably give it a play sooner or later, but probably not at launch.

Just played the Demo.
Yeah.
I dunno. It was over the top, and I know this is a demo and everything, but the over-the-top stuff didn't feel earned, so it lacked impact. Like, over the top compared to what else? There was no sense of any of it being out of the ordinary for the characters doing it, so...hmm.
Gigantic gray man commands a smaller battleship to attack a guy he himself cannot destroy. Hmmm.
Main character has a bottomless well of rage that trumps anything because he can apparently get angry enough to do anything he needs to, and enemies frequently hurt him more badly in cutscenes without killing him then they do in actual gameplay. Hmmm.
I think I would've liked it more if the game was more continuous. You're constantly seeing the flow of action chopped into little camera sequences that break you out of association with the character. You're flying offscreen to emphasize how far a guy can hit you, rather than doing some kind of pan or zoom that keeps you there.
It just doesn't feel like you earn anything you do, because it's all about filling the meter to unleash the next quick time event and you only damage your opponents as the plot dictates.
Setting feels like it could be a lot of 'twelve elaborately dressed people who lived forever on an almost barren world.'
I'd love to know how a dude can sleep for 12,000 years and come back to save his young daughter. She should either be dead, all grown up, or maybe not that bad off at that point. Maybe she escaped on her own? This is dumb.
Maybe this is just exclusive to the two parts they showed, but if he beats EVERY boss by nearly dying/losing his arms EVERY TIME, I can see these Big Goddamn Hero moments losing their impact fast XD
You could make an argument that this is basically "Heavy Rain: The Anime".
But no, in truth this is by all accounts "Anime: The Game".
I kind of wish they just stopped making traditional Anime altogether and just make each new series an interactive super-crazy videogame instead. Even though that would also bring us back to the dark days of paying $50 for VHS tapes.
The one major complaint though is that some of the fight portions dragged way too long. Maybe it's because I wasn't playing it right, but the part where the guy pulls out his sword took like 15 minutes for me before unlocking the next wave.
The other major complaint? Lack of an awesome Anime theme song.
I'm not talking about that J-Pop shit, I'm talking 80's metal:
There's simply no way most of you were playing through the parts where he's punching at super speed and this song wasn't playing in your head. I'm going to get this on 360 just so I can add it in every time.
But seriously, the game sorely needs an awesome theme song, since they nailed everything else down.
If we still had more shows like this today instead of the softcore porn passing off as kid's shows, we'd probably get our Anime Thread back.
I think it'll fun to just sit back and watch the insanity and try to anticipate when you're going to have to hit something because it's not always clear. The repercussions are another story as it appears to have absolutely no bearing on your progress if you miss but that might just be the demo giving up the goods on purpose.
However when it comes to this type of QTE-focused experience I think you really CANT have a "fail" screen after every single missed button press. It seems to be more about watching an interactive narrative and having to go back and re-watch the same scene play out over and over while you try to get back to the spot you missed pressing "Y" on originally would be more infuriating than anything.
I like Professor's idea that this should just be a new style of "interactive" anime going forward. Needs more tentacle though.
I hate QTEs in most games but I seriously loved this demo and I don't know why. I was looking forward to this game to smash some faces but the panzer dragoonish parts were alright too.
So yeah, turns out I was playing it wrong the first time; I guess I missed the prompt about using circle/B as the standard melee button. Kept mashing X instead.
Also, the game runs considerably better on the 360. I had choppiness and screen tearing issues on PS3.
The battles also turn into a thing of beauty when you don't miss any QTE prompts. Catch the dude's sword the first time he lunges it at you and watch what happens.
i think the thing that irks me the most about this demo is that in chapter 11 when you're slamming on the circle button to melee the guy you don't seem to do fucking anything to him
if i'm only hitting circle in order to build the bar in order to do another BURST!!!!!! sequence then why even give me the option of combat? shit is stupid
honestly i'm enthralled enough by the art style and aesthetic of this game that as long as there are a lot of DMC/bayonetta-style freeform-roaming combat areas in between all the QTE animu boss fights i might buy it
All I want is multiple outcomes...different crazy ways the fights could go down.
So far the only difference I saw was a slight change in the terrain after catching that first sword attack. It would be awesome if they could work in different finishers and such.
Heck, how about a fight where nabbing perfectly timed QTE's let you completely school the opposing enemy? Sometimes a hero has a right to show off, too.
I enjoyed the demo, and decided to get it, though it would be nice for more variation. Like are there variations between getting good/excellent/whatever during the bursts?

From the demo there doesn't seem to be aside from how much of your burst bar you fill up.
I suspect in the full version it will be the same dealy but you'll be ranked every chapter and that will depend on how good you hit the QTE's; and I'm sure there'll be achievements for getting only excellent in every one which will induce so much rage that eyes will bleed.
I hate that my OCD is such an achievement whore because games I might be casually interested in (el shaddai was the last one) I pass up because there are achievements I know I won't be able to get with my poor skills at games like these. So I await the achievement list.
I thought the demo was fun, though I'm honestly I'm not sure sure if it's "full price" fun. I wish they threw in an episode where you fought a bunch of mooks too.
This seems to be more of a big-budget beat'em than anything, though without any "normal" stages in the demo, it's difficult to see if the combat system will have any more depth to it. That said, I hope the boss battles only get more epic from here. You have to wonder what they'll do to top a guy so large his fingernails are the size of mountains.

i dunno the last segment of episode 11 was pretty over the top
i literally laughed out loud at the part where you get propelled off the surface and actually achieve atmospheric entry
Are we sure there are "normal" stages? Maybe the demo is really what the whole game is like?
*laugh* Yeah, I thought of this later. There might not be any "mook killing" beyond the stuff like the warship assaulting you when Stone Butt ordered it too.

I know, it's a major challenge, but I'm sure they can pull it off.
And for those unaware, here are at least three iconic Anime moments the game is clearly drawing inspiration from.
