I don't even understand 3d. It's not 3d in the way that the world is 3d, because you can't choose what to focus on. Some things are always in focus and some things are always out of focus. That works perfectly fine for a 2d movie, because it's just an image projected on a screen, but when you try to trick my brain into seeing in 3d, the whole "how come I can't focus on this object in the foreground" thing annoys the hell out of me. With normal movies, if I look at something that's out of focus, it's fine that it doesn't come into focus, because I'm just looking at a flat picture. When I look at what my brain thinks is a 3d object and it remains blurry, that's just a giant mindfuck. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a 3d movie, and I've seen stuff like Avatar, which seems to be built for that, and Up, which, as an entirely CG movie, would presumably make the transition to 3d perfectly. Hugo was one of my least favorite: Scorcese basically just shoved steam in my face for 2 hours because, well, he could?
This man has all the correct answers.
The big problem with 3D is most people do it backwards. 3D should be used to create depth by having objects recede behind the frame, but most uses of it are to show stupid crap being shoved out of the front of the frame, and, usually, being clipped by the edges of the frame anyway.
It should be subtle. All the best movie special effects work because you don't know it's there, you just know the movie is awesome.
only shitty directors need 3d to do this.
Kurosawa's been doing this for years and in black and white.
When I saw John Carter, I had to see it in 3d. I didn't want to see it in 3d, and I didn't want to pay the 10.00 (vs. a normal matinee of 6) price tag for it, but the theater was only showing the 3d "version." This is happening more and more here on films that are released in both formats (even at larger theaters that can spare a slot for both the 2d and 3d versions).
It's pretty damn infuriating. I'm a dyed in the wool "see it in the theater or it doesn't count" kind of guy, but even I'm being driven from the multiplex by this model conversion.
The theaters here do Tuesday cheap deals, and if its the first Tuesday of a newly released movie, if possible, it will only be shown in 3d/IMAX/ULTRA-AVX. So if I want to see a new movie in just a regular theater and get the Tuesday deal I have to wait longer. :P
I just watched The Man From Earth. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It has much more conflict and much more of a plot than I'd been led to believe. In fact, its minimalism makes it a great study in the skillful usage of storytelling techniques.
Probably the best example I've seen of how "action" doesn't mean parkour, "conflict" doesn't mean gunfights, and "movement" doesn't mean car chases. Hell, it even manages to sneak in a "science fiction" doesn't mean aliens and spaceships.
My zombie survival life simulator They Don't Sleep is out now on Steam if you want to check it out.
Watched The Illusionist last night. It's beautifully animated, with a metric ton of lovely touches to characterisation and some neat jokes, but it's also kind of cloyingly sentimental and melancholy and basically quite a slight film.
Cloyingly sentimental? I thought the film was quite good at de-sentimentalising what could easily have been cloying. (Also, what's wrong with melancholy?)

Wasn't it delightful though? Think of all the carefully rendered aliens that you couldn't really look at properly because the 3D made it impossible without getting a detached retina! Think of all that jumping that just wouldn't have been the same! Who wants to see 2D jumping? Suckers, that's who.

Adam McKay and Judd Apatow's stable of writer/directors seem to be able to routinely do this with little issue.
Todd Phillips seems to think that movies are some kind of contest to see how much money you can earn doing as little work as possible.
I seem to think Phillips revels in a certain type of anti-social, misanthropic character more than other people that came up working with those groups. Paul Feig seems to have a sense of heart; Phillips doesn't.

Right. Phillips just goes, "Hey, look at these horrible people! Aren't they funny because they're so horrible?!" and stops right there.
As well (and I've mentioned this elsewhere) Phillips has used the same lazy writing crutch in four movies now: the roap trip. It's what bad writers default to when they just want to show an unrelated series of absurd events without having to tie it into a greater story. What's worse, the last time Phillips did this he couldn't even be bothered to write a new script.

So, anyone going to see Mirror, Mirror this weekend?
It's Tarsem Singh, so I can't really help myself. I may bring my iPod, however.
Soon I will watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi and then go eat sushi. Cheap-ish sushi? Absolutely.
Well. I was hungry every time they did a food-porn closeup on the sushi being put on a tray. Lots of "This man really enjoys making sushi" and "His sons, the poor bastards, they'll never be perceived to be as good" and "Work hard at what you love to do". Not a whole lot of insight into anything else. It was alright.
Phillips' movies suffer from his notion that completely reprehensible characters are endearing and engaging if, at the very last moment, you find out they have a tragic past, even if that tragedy plays no real motivation in their behavior.
I fully expect his next film to feature a character that pulls kittens in half while screaming, "My parents died in a tragic explosion!"
So Wrath of the Titans is currently getting trashed by critics. Fuck it I'll still see it in 2D tomorrow. Between that and Avengers I only have like one or two movies I want to see.
Mirror Mirror is at about 55% with 50 reviews counted on rotten tomatoes. Consensus : "Like most of Tarsem Singh's films, Mirror Mirror is undeniably beautiful -- but its treatment of the age-old Snow White fable lacks enough depth or originality to set it apart from the countless other adaptations of the tale."
Not too surprised.

Not to sound xenophobic, but Tarsem's movies tend to follow a trend of being extremely nice to look at while having very little concern for the story being told that not at all uncommon with films from India and Russia. He reminds me a lot of Bekmambetov, actually.
If he could get a great script, Tarsem would be the next big whatever.

seems to be the opposite reaction from audience reviews so it looks like a pure effects movie that you can get drunk and watch with friends. Not much more.

So, am I the only one that's planning to watch Titanic next week?
I dunno, I really liked the movie, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've always been fascinated with the legend of the Titanic, and I'm a fan of the time period. And I guess I'm a romantic.
I've got a slight issue with Titanic with regards to the portrayal of Murdoch. As in, it being horribly wrong with regards to his behaviour; instead of shooting people then killing himself, he was in charge of launching (10) the starboard lifeboats, which in the end accounted for 75% of the people who survived.
The film makers refused to take this scene out, and instead flew some executives out to his hometown and donated £5000, which considering the money this film made, in addition to the actual amount (honestly, how much money did the executives spend going out there?), I find to be pretty insulting.

My problem with Titanic is that was devoid of any merit.

Tarsem Singh, director of the Snow White adaptation Mirror Mirror, told The Hollywood Reporter that his intended follow-up, the wartime thriller Eye in the Sky, is meant to be a departure after tackling projects that have emphasized visual rather than narrative considerations. "I had just been looking specifically for material that wasn't on paper, that was not written well," Tarsem said Tuesday. "I wanted that because I want to be able to put enough of my DNA in it and I am very aware that I'm putting the cart ahead of the donkey. But now I'd like to do non-visual films, and I'd like to go reflect on people."
I must admit that this is so mindblowingly dumb, that I can't help but be fascinated by it. I hope it actually gets made and released. The chances of it not being a trainwreck are slim to none, but I'm sure it will be glorious.

Oh well, it's this or 21 jump street.
21 jump street is a great comedy, seriously
That was such a surprising thing to hear after it came out, basically universal praise for what looked like the worst cash-in idea I'd ever heard.
I can't decide how I feel about the two trailers. I thought it might be a bit more of a parody, instead it looks more like a science fiction-y twist on the cliche.

I dunno, man. Can't we always use more "comedies" with irredeemably awful people doing awful things and getting away with it scot-free?
I also like Judd Appatow movies.
I used to love Adam Sandler movies.
And now I wonder where Luke Wilson went off to after doing those AT&T commercials.

Not a dry eye in the house.
I know. I'm really hoping for something else.
Yeah. I'm waiting for Snow White and the Huntsman. That looks like a good Snow White adaption.

The original teasers, I was like "ugh" and I still can't get past the casting of Kristen Stewart
But the newest trailer, I have to admit, it looks pretty entertaining
Also, the screenwriter from Drive is a co-screenwriter for it, so uh, there's that
25% of the current trailer (to my recollection) features a dwarf hitting someone with various items.
You must be hoping very, very hard.
I'm down to crossing my toes. All my fingers are broken from all the crossing.
Also, my feet are remarkably dextrous.
Not too surprised.

It's a problem you see even with people like Spielberg.
