So if I wanted to be a writer, hypothetically (because other than a strong interest during my childhood and adolescence, I haven't shown any evidence that I would be succesful), what would I do? Just go to school for an Bachelors in English and write?
You already know the answer to the question is 'write'. Are you already writing every day? If not, are you sure you really want to be a writer?
no I'm definitely not sure. But I'm not sure about any hobby or career. I'm just sure I don't want to be resigned to working for the state for the rest of my life.
I mean, I have no real objectives or anything. Just got a story idea that I intend to pursue after work, but was wondering if maybe there's something beyond that, since like I said as a teenager it used to be a thing I thought I would actually do. Before I got into web development. I'd like to try my hand at journalism, but really I'd love to write fiction.
Then do it.
The main thing, the ultimate main thing over and above all other things that divide writers from not-writers, is that one of them has a story idea and one of them has a story on paper.
Aren't Korean games really just war simulators to see who will finally rule over the peninsula?
Hint: It's the Chinese
have you seen that lol map of China's claims to the south China sea? It's incredible. It's just all China. All of it. Even the bits of it in other countries, that's China too.
It's hard to take any Chinese territorial claim seriously when they seem to be operating under the principle that the planet is China, the rest of us just don't know it yet.
This is actually a bit of an oversimplification of the South China Sea disputes and the Senkaku/Diaoyu dispute.
The South China Sea dispute has to be broken down into the Philippines dispute and the Vietnamese dispute.
The Philippines is mostly around the continental self since the islands are so tiny they are mostly rocks. This one is seems like a land grab but is also tied to tons of Chinese energy imports flow through this part of the world.
The Vietnamese dispute is actually based on an agreement between Mao and Ho Chi Min in the 1960s where they drew arbitrary dashes giving Vietnam territory it probably wouldn't of controlled otherwise. This was discovered to contain a good amount of hydrocarbons recently. China pushed for joint exploitation but Vietnam did unilateral exploitation then fucked up its loans and now there isn't much but platforms not producing. China really just wants the rights to tap the oil but is also in the mood to push its neighbors around.
Senkaku/Diaoyu was taken by Japan in the 1895 war with China. It was considered conquered Chinese territory and the US took ownership after WWII. In the lat 1960s a UN geological survey found oil deposits. The US gave the Island back to Japan instead of China in the 1970s. Pissed off China but it was put to the side by Deng Xiaopeng. Has come up recently as the oil deposits can now be tapped and there is an estimated 95-100 billion barrels of oil there. On top of the CCP has built a lot of legitimacy in the last 20 years off anti-Japanese rhetoric and claims on protecting and retaking Chinese land.
Wow this got to huge post size fast.
While Casual did oversimplify, he wasn't really wrong.
Yes and no.
China doesn't see itself as the planet. It still has a very sino-centric view. But so have a very American-centric view.
And though it is partially a land grab. It is a land grab following legal precedents they have signed. And very much tied to China's need for domestic energy production since they import so much from the gulf the US could cut it off with a few ships in the Malacca Strait.
The map is funny but again China is using what it considers traditional claims. This will probably end up in bilateral negotiations and if the Philippines and Vietnam were smart they would force to the Court from the Convention on the Law of the Sea. Of course that would piss China off but they signed the treaty too.
Hastily justified land grabs are still land grabs, Mazzy. I understand the nuances of the positions, but that doesn't really change the bare bones facts on the ground. China thinks it's justified, well. Okay. Lots of Americans think the Indian Removal Act was justified, too.
You see what I'm saying?
I am not defending China.
I am describing a situation which is complex that includes a lot of domestic issues, Chinese nationalism and lots of external countries and treaties like UNCLOS and are more than just straight land grabs and have a lot of consequences for a major economic region.

When 21-year-old Kevin Smith decided he wanted to be a filmmaker, his sister gave him some advice: "Don't say you want to be a filmmaker; just be one."
Just put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, or pick up a typewriter, and write. Hammer out ideas. Don't worry about structure or anything. Just get lots of practice actually writing.
And hey, if kevin tries real hard maybe one day he'll finally make a film!
heyooo.
but seriously. I love Kevin Smith
Actually, Mori, consider picking up his book, "Tough Shit". It's a quick read and is very inspiring.
Plus you get to read like a whole chapter of smith dismantling Bruce Willis.

One thing English degrees won't do is teach you how to get your shit in print, unless you specifically take a class for that which is really just a waste of money.
I'm telling you that the majority of people writing in "literary" journals get in there through networking, not necessarily on the strength of your work (it has to be good, but this isn't usually enough). So you can go to school, meet other writers, get published in the school journal or go to readings and do the same.

I get that the Chinese feel like they have very compelling reasons for why everyone's base are belong to them, but its still fucking bullshit. Claiming sea hundreds of miles away from your mainland, right up to the coastline of every other nation in the region is bullshit. I don't even mean the senkaku thing that could go either way, but claiming all Vietnam and the Philippines territorial waters is objectively indefenceable.
It would be the same as the UK looking at Norway and saying "well, our military is bigger than theirs and they have lots of oil, fuck it their sea belongs to us now".
The U.K. didn't do it to Norway. They did it to Iceland.
Not really. There's fuck all oil between Iceland and the UK. Also we didn't invade them or threaten to invade them or start sending our navy to sail in threatening circles around Iceland.
It wasn't about Oil. It was about fish. And the Royal Navy did start escorting fishing vessels and warning off Icelandic vessels. And in two cases ramming Icelandic Coast Guard ships. The whole thing finally ends when Iceland threatens to shut down the naval base at Keflavík. At which point the U.K. was told by the U.S. to knock that shit off.

Source for the navy part? Not saying you're wrong just I never heard of it.
Also I'm looking at the UK licence holdings right now (I work for a north sea operator) and the UK area between Iceland ends well short of the pharoe islands. In other words almost exactly half way between Iceland and the UK. Not "right up to their coastline".

Or is this a personal dig?
Why not just start carving stone tablets?!
It's an averages thing. There are a lot of people that write, and very few people who get paid enough to do it alone.

It really depends on what kind of writing you're doing.
No one in the world of Poetry can make a living off the stuff. No one.
This is pretty much true unless you're a NYT best seller and come out with a book every year or get really lucky with like a kid's book.
But plenty of people make their living as journalists and technical writers (but this isn't really what you're talking about).
