So since it equals 0 can I add my +2 on that? So I get 2 good things of my choosing?
If I'm interpreting Silver 2.0 rules correctly, a +2 can be used for either two "just barely succeeded" or one "moderate success." Also, we're undetected, so you get another +1 on attacks on top of that. So a total of +3.
Also, I totally forgot about my trait. So tapping (Swords +1) gives me a total roll of 0. Not great, but at least it means I'm not gonna, like, lose a limb or something.
Cedric is not normally a combat element of a unit, but his unique skillset has its places. Focusing on where he last saw the voice giving the orders he pulses out the natural EM field his body generates. His body shudders as the voltage within his muscles shifts and breaks and the hair on the back of his neck rises.

The bonus from a Concept applies directly to the roll, meaning that, if you rolled a 0 with a +2 concept, you actually have a total result of +2.
You may opt to Play the cancelled pairs and suffer both the negatives and the positive effects. For instance, if you rolled a +2 and a -3 (-1) you could opt to play the one or both of the cancelled pairs.
And then later on the rules say you can determine how many cancelled pairs you wish to play.
And I'm thinking, "What? How does that work? You only roll two dice, so there's only ever one pair."
But it's not talking about the dice. It's talking about each individual +/-1.
Bixel reaches into his quiver, searching for the right arrow.
Explosive? No. Boomerang? Nuh-uh. Salamander? How did that even get back in there.
There we go, blunt force arrow. Bixel draws back on the string, the various interlacing string and pulleys creating much more force than humanly possible. With a soft exhale he lets go.
The arrow soars into into the back of the leaders head, its wide head knocking him out cold.
NOTE TO ALL METAL GEARS: We're undetected right now, so we get a +1 on any attacks we make against an opponent for the current round. And if you're using one of your traits to attack, you get a +1 or +2 on top of that.
In your case, Bluedude, your total roll is actually a +1.
Oh, and now that I actually understand how the Play Pairs rules work...
@Speed Racer I'm gonna edit my post with this too, but just so you know, I'm gonna play one of those three cancelled pairs to behead the guy. So a +1 to behead and a -1 on me to do with what you will.
Showboats is what Bashe thinks as her teammates throw subtlety out the window in favour of theatrics. Bashe was always a practical kinda gall.
She circles around the attacking group while her teammates catch their attention. Then she emerges from the shadows, near where she heard the leader's voice coming from. She punches the leader across the face, dazing them, then pulls them back into the treeline where she smashes them against the ground with enough force to knock them out.
Jian frowns underneath the mask, as the obviously unsettled woman runs away. He whips around, a pair of three eyes staring down Albatross, "Pathetic."
He looks back towards the mansion.
"Obvious point of interest. Obvious point of capture. If as helpless together as this one, capture a certainty. If woman reports to anyone, capture a certainty."
He waits for a nanosecond for the "team" to get themselves together, before quickly deciding better of it and marching south, towards the graveyard.
"May as well explore first. Gain some knowledge of our situation."
"Grizzly?", without looking back, he casually motions for Atlas to come along.
Despite the peaceful scenery, Mantis keeps his bug-eyes peeled for enemy combatants along the way.
Though, since you're using CQB, you can add a +1. You're also arguably using Stealth to do it (unlike me), so you'd probably get your +1 bonus from that.
So I believe you're at least a +4, possibly a +5 (depending on how Speed rules it).

Damn son
Yup! That's the point of the system Speed has set up.
When we're undetected, any action we make that also includes at least one of our traits can't result in anything less than a -1. And our best possible roll is a +6 (+3 from roll, +1 from undetected, +2 from traits). When we're stealthy, we're powerful.
But when we reach the highest alert level, the highest total we can hope for (i.e. best roll possible and a +2 from our traits) is a +3.

I like that, even after hearing these guys say they're willing to take prisoners, one character just has to go full psycho and chop a head off.

I'm just waiting for the point to come where Jian starts to smash faces or rushes in to smash faces and immediately gets -3 and is filled full of holes
what did I said about making a red shirt character before this game started
so dead, i have a question (not necessarily related to any actions posted (but maybe it is???))
do have some amount of GM fiat to add penalties for actions i deem sufficiently difficult
i assume that i must, since "success" only requires a 1, and how powerful "success" is depends entirely on the phrasing of the action
a random example being dux knocking out his target vs. stilts murdering his
both players scored more than 1, so both actions should succeed, but it would make sense that shooting to kill would be trickier than shooting to stun, right?

just my opinion, but I'd say that in comparing attempting to stun someone and accidentally killing them and attempting to kill someone and accidentally stunning them
the former is probably easier then the latter,
again though, imo
i can see why it would make sense from a gameplay perspective for the opposite to be true
"I jump to the moon" and "I shoot a guy" are two things with very different difficulty levels, so I must be able to give the moon jumper a penalty to even things out, right?
While "You succeed" is a simple effect, "You defeat an enemy" has a (3) after it, meaning that you cannot activate that effect without a +3 action.
Until they get a +3 action, they can't defeat the enemy, all actions would just weaken. A knock out might be a stagger, a kill might be a wound.
When they do have the +3 necessary to activate "You defeat an enemy" what type of defeat it is doesn't matter.
Also, note that you have fiat from the line "that is not guaranteed to succeed or fail" - jumping to the moon, except under very specific circumstances, is pretty much bound to fail.
Also, again, remember to have enemies and obstacles be negative Concepts. Maybe this guy is Freight-Train-2. That's two less possible successes on any rolls where his concept would apply.

Kyohei watched as his compatriots, one by one, conned their way into the club. That sort of silver-tongued method was neither his style nor his forte, so an alternate route was going to be necessary. The steel guy, Visigoth, mentioned two other ways inside before he stomped off in the direction what Kyohei presumed would be the rear employee's entrance. Busting through with a robot wasn't going to be very subtle; that much was obvious.
The vent it would have to be.
A gaggle of ludicrously dressed party-goers had piled into the elevator behind them as Kyohei turned to take a ride up. He roughly grabbed one of them by the scruff of his jacket and yanked him out of the steel cage, inserting himself into the packed space instead. Thumbing the button for the next floor up, his eyes glazed over briefly as he plumbed Qilp for something resembling a blueprint map of the joint. It didn't take too long to find one; after all, you could find anything in Qilpspace if you put your mind to it.
A brisk walk from the floor's lobby brought him to a small, carelessly unlocked, maintenance locker door. The vent entrance would likely be inside, but the unfortunate security camera down the hall would make getting inside inconspicuously a bit more of a nuisance than Kyohei would've liked. Easily solved, of course, as he fired up the favourite of all his ECM systems. A short burst from the Vlasta system should block out the optical vision of the camera for long enough to get through the door unnoticed.
Spend however much code to block the camera's sight for, oh, 3 seconds?

I think you're right, Neo. Each +1 or -1 counts as one success or failure. For the longest time this passage from the rules made no sense to me: And then later on the rules say you can determine how many cancelled pairs you wish to play.

Because of it being a PbP, yeah, Holds and Plays should be declared beforehand.
However, everyone should note that editing a post with a geth roll command doesn't alter or erase the roll.
This means you can make your post, see the roll, then edit it to include any Holds or Plays.
ok so you can make your decision based on the result of the roll and not just conditionally declare stuff before seeing the result
so like what stilts did is totally legitimate
that's all i was asking
