Yeah, James Franco's stuff is remarkably not-great. I would call them vanity projects, but he's not exactly asking people to look at them. He's just a guy with the money to cater to his own whims.
He's a pretty inoffensive celebrity when it comes right down to it. He does his little projects, they get some press, not a lot of people actually enjoy what he does, but he's a cutie. Franco isn't out there slipping nips or dropping n-bombs, he just gets stoned with Seth Rogen, goes to school, and is an artist from time to time.

but in my experience in uni people who try to put their own opinions on a paper without having a published academic with an identical opinion to cite tend to fail

interpreting obscure early 20th century poetry isn't exactly a science
as long as your logic is sound and you can point to textual or other sources to support a reading it's valid

To me he comes off as someone who just seems to coast through things. I mean, he was alright in some things I saw which wasn't a lot but I liked him in the first Spider-Man movie.
Then I saw him host the Oscars with Anne Hathaway and wondered if he had hotboxed his limo before the show.
He strikes me as someone who really wants to care about things on a deep level but can't focus his interests on any one thing long enough to be good at it. And he's kinda lazy.
