So, I have an acquaintance that is a professional cartoonist and they want to make a visual novel and that caught wind that I used to do programming, so now they want me to do the programming part of a visual novel.
Which should be really easy, I think, I think I learned enough in my high school programming classes to do something like that. On top of that, there is dedicated software for making visual novels (Ren'Py, Twine, are the two I am looking at right now.) I guess it depends on how complicated of a VN she wants.
Would any of you happen to know about making VNs and what software is worth using or have any advice? Going to be doing research today for the most part.
EVERYONE IS MAKING PORN NOW
Locally sourced, humane, artisanal porn.
My porn is not organic, and contains TONS of hormones.
Hiyooo!
Did anyone else think that Ed McMahon didn't really think about making that exclamatory sound and only did it offhand, and then it became a thing, and for the next thirty years the only thing people wanted from him was a single weird noise?
"Who's Ed McMahon?"
"Oh, he's the guy that makes that one sound. You know. 'Hiyooo!' From the thing."
Thanks! I'll start looking into Ren'Py. It will take some time to figure out what the person I am working with actually wants to do, so I have plenty of time to tool around. I am sure I will give you a shout when I inevitably run into confounding issues, as all programming does.

Ok, rewriting this because Vanilla ate it (it's right there in my post history, but won't display in the thread @IcyLiquid )
Setting is a future somewhere between 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451 and Minority Report. The Japanese develop a system that very accurately understands the human mind, recognising what people will find interesting, as well as both immediate and latent criminal inclinations. The main cast are 6 "police", 2 detectives who are psychologically normal people, and 4 enforcers, latent criminals (i.e. haven't committed any crimes) who work together to hunt down latent criminals and investigate murders.
The simple plot is that there's a "Moriarty" figure who is "criminally asymptomatic", i.e. the system does not properly recognise him as a criminal due to his detachment, allowing him to organise a series of gruesome murders. The complex plot is a rumination on our social values, ranging from freedom of action and personality, to social bureaucracy and justice. The show isn't afraid to drop references to books and authors regarding these subjects, and both the antagonist and the secondary protagonist are presented as being as well read as the authors of the show are.
There are also sweet laser guns, robots, lesbians, a cool future setting (we wear holograms over our clothes and rooms, and can change them as our whim suits), a really good English dub, and an excellent soundtrack.
It's exactly the sort of thing that shows what you can do with a cool premise and a high quality animation studio (Production I.G.), as opposed to live action.

BTW, Leland Yee's closest associate in local politics was Ed Jew, who is currently serving time for not just accepting bribes, but trying to extort bribes.

what's the word for the study of how things were written about? I forgot I feel like its SIMILAR to hagiography, but obvs it's not that
I'm not sure what you're asking.
Philology is the discipline where you study the history of language
So that might be what you're asking about...

"We believe in the people and their 'wisdom' as if there was some special secret entrance to knowledge that barred to anyone who had ever learned anything." - Friedrich Nietzsche
It's the difference between watching Star Trek and being a trekkie.
I don't see the difference. If you've watched just about every episode of Next Generation, you're more committed than most to the show and are therefore a Trekkie.

I had Torchbearer at the top of my list, it sounds fun.

Is there another term for a video game enthusiast than gamer that people actually use?
I'd rather not really be labeled at all!
But I wouldn't care strongly if I was either.

I was doin' a run today and noticed that a doge was watching me calmly and not barking. I thought, "What a good dog, not barking at runners."
Then I had a mental hiccup and went, "nein! I'm RUNNING but I'm not a RUNNER...unless I make 5 miles today!"
(I didn't but that was because my phone died at 4 mi)
(im not a runner)
