As a non-Dark Souls person, I have a question. Is DS2 a sequel in terms of an ongoing plot from the first game or is it more like "Here's some more ways to die in this world, enjoy"?
It exists in the same world but frankly unless you really really dig at it and care a lot the plot is so secondary in DS (to me, anyway) that it doesn't matter.
I know I'm not really answering but that's because I haven't played ds2 yet and don't know

Killed the Ancient dragon and King Vendrick
Went and got Vendrick's soul and his armor set
Maxed my Sunbros and Abyss covenant rank
Learned all gestures
Got the chaos firestorm spell
Did the assassin side quests (haven't released that guy yet but planning to so I can rank up Way of the Blue)
Got Rank 1 Bellbros
I think that's mostly it? I know I need to trade some items at the nest still, not sure if that matters what playthrough you do it on. Haven't killed any NPCs yet but I think I read sins carry over so I'm not sure I want to? Haven't invaded that cleric girl yet either.

if you want to kill some npcs do it now while you have access to the confessor guy if you don't wanna carry the sin
unless you want to kill him, then you have to wait to absolve anyway

I am pro-Yahoo Screen simply because they host all the good SNL clips, which have been banished from youtube for years. I may just come to like them if they can do a decent job with Community's season 6.
