I kind of hope the vote ends up 51% no

just enough of a scrape across to really infuriate the yes-folk

this doesn't really seem like the thing where 51% should be considered sufficient majority either way

That's literally what we had with the last big referendum on Quebec separation back in the 90's (50.58 no, 49.42 yes).

having independence be a simple majority vote seems like a way to make about half the country mad

The 1979 poll had a rule where 40% of registered voters had vote for it, not just a majority of participants in the referendum.

So while 51% of folk were in favour of it, they only reflected 32% of the population and thus the proposal not carried out.

Methinks turnout could very well be a factor here.

South Sudan was created in 2011, and I don't think the world was drastically shaken up.

In what way would an independent Scotland wake the world up?

yeah like even disregarding voter turnout that would obviously not be enough for separation were the scales slightly tipped the other way

I shall run the shadows again tonight.

I am torn on what to play.

I can do a mage, haven't done one yet.

I could do a rigger as well, all the drones.

Shaman gets dropped because the one you get is great.

    Maybe an adept?

    So much option.

    I don't get this.

    Wake up call to who?

    About what?

Do you even care if it's good for the people of Scotland or do you feel it'll make some point to your own politicians?

    Somehow i doubt it will.

The standard agreement for Norn Iron's status is whatever a majority of its population wants.

It does really feel like a 2/3's level decision, though.

    South Sudan is where exactly?

Scotland is a western European country that just decided to peacefully cede from GB after 300 years of marriage.

I'm pretty sure there are a few other places in Europe that'd like their own independence.

Anyway, an inpedendent scotland means bollocks for other separatist movements in europe.

    Oh definitely!

Catalonia (Northeast Spain, Barcelona) has been agitating for it for a while. Venice held an online vote where secession from Italy won quite handily, however:

    - Online vote
    - It was nonbinding
    - Online vote

I read an article suggesting that separatism is popular in places because folk feel disengaged from the existing political structures and wants to try something else. I think they have a point.

I don't count the separatism in Ukraine for this case, because that's Russian adventurism.

    and? finish your sentences.

Scotland being a part of a UNSC member matters to the world... how?

south sudan shook the world up because of oil is relevant... how?

Using sterling is different from having control over sterling_ which they currently have. Using someone else's currency without formal mechanism to influence it seems like a risky move.
