I haven't played Final Fantasy VIII yet, but I find it hilarious that there is apparently a literal god who is so invested in a trading card game that it actually uses its supernatural powers to blur the line between the game rules and the real world.
Not remembering this.
You just said that Quetzalcoatl gives you the magical power to turn monsters into Triple Triad cards, and Triple Triad cards into physical items and spells. Triple Triad presumably being a human invention.
That's like if God smote Lot's wife by turning her into a first-edition Black Lotus card instead of a pillar of salt. Dude just fuckin' LOVES Magic: The Gathering.
I mean I'm not complaining, it just makes the game feel very weird to play. The card game is boring so far, and so is drawing magic right from enemies, so I'd honestly prefer just killing mans to level up. Coming off the awesome material system to this is no bueno

try to not actually level up btw, as enemies level with you
it's much better if you draw a bunch while you can and run from other random battles because ff8 is a shitty fucking game with an incomprehensibly dumb story
People are giving you all these tips on how to break FF8 because there are a whole, whole lot of ways to easily break FF8 but I played through my first time "normally" and it went fine.
I think I abused drawing and junctioning status effect magic a bit and figured out pretty quickly that haste was godlike, but, honestly, it's a Final Fantasy game. You'll be fine.

I take every opportunity I can to talk about how awful ff8 is
FF8 is my second favorite Final Fantasy (after 6 of course) because I was such a fucking teenager when I first played it and the nostalgia is strong with me.
But yeah it is not a good game by any objective measure.
FF8 is a game that has a bunch of cool concepts and then proceeds to execute every single one of them about as poorly as possible, whether through bad writing or shoddy translation or whatever.
It is also so, so anime, which was cool when I first played it and hadn't been exposed to that genre but now...
I remember thinking it was boring the first time around, but I think I was just a bit too young to appreciate the political intrigue and such with the plot. I'm really enjoying it now!

The titular main character (or at least the 'Luke Skywalker' of the story is definitely a little kid, but other characters are better. Plus the actual game is so boring. A waste of amazing aesthetics (which I was relieved to see were repeated in XIV)

alpha edition, you plebe
And it apparently also gives you separate toggles to turn off random encounters and to max your stats out as well
That's rad
Really hope those make it into the PS4 version coming this winter

It could be better, certainly
But the characters are great, the story and setting are so awesome that I kinda don't care too much about its gameplay fuckups

explosive amnesia
FFVIII is the only game where the teenagers actually feel like teenagers which is one of the reasons I actually dig the characters so much
Selphie is 17 and it shows
Yuna from FFX is 17 but is somehow like 30

Not FF12! Most of the cast are actual damn adults, which is
so refreshing
Isn't Vaan pretty young though
It's a slice of life if you're living in a teen-mercenary academy

warriors of light, firion, cecil, burtz, cloud and claire are all not teenagers
and those are just the protagonists
If they ever do a remaster though I'll give it a shot
There was that rumor like a week ago that was quickly shot down
he is kinda insane
like
he was psychologically broken at least twice prior to the game even occurring and once in game
dude has some issues
Can I just play as him instead
So far it seems like my actual team can barely tolerate one another
that continues for roughly the whole game
laguna crew are the only characters that seem like actual people
Seriously
FFVIII has the coolest limit breaks by far
Quickenings are the coolest limit breaks in my book
