    The military are rolling in.

Between 5 and 7 different attacks?! That is appalling.

What kind of man power would that take?

There was one report of a random attack where a car pulled up to a bar and two people jumped out, then shot some patrons drinking outside the bar, then jumped back inside and sped away. Unconfirmed at this point I'd imagine, but if this included in those locations, then I don't imagine it would take all that much man power at all.

Yeah, this is coordinated in manner not seen before. This goes way further than the previous lone wolf attacks.

I'm actually worried whether this real-time reporting/tweeting has made this situation worse. If we know the police are moving into the bataclan in real-time, so do the assailants.

4 separate attacks so far. The Liberation newspaper has reporters on the ground, and is the best source I can find right now.

This will only serve to strengthen the French resolve in attacking isis, by a huge amount. The French may be many things and have been called worse, but they are not cowards.

    Kipling put it best:
Their business is war, and they do their business.

France Military spending is one of the highest in Europe and they are a nuclear power with at least 300 nukes. They are absolutely not a joke military wise

Nope, they are no joke at all. The absolutely asinine "cheese eating surrender monkey" stereotype (which, by the way, needs to go die in a fucking fire) came out of France being reluctant to fight after a war that quite literally decimated their male population.

...yeah, that annoys me just a teeny bit.

Apparently Francois Hollande was at the football match and left early. Word of the shootings in Paris had reached him and he went to deal with it.

This is happening because a group of inhuman monsters have devoted time and resources into producing and executing a plan to kill innocent people. It doesn't matter what they claim as motivation. That is it, right there, and treating them like they had any other motivation risks legitimizing, excusing, or otherwise shifting the blame here. A group of terrible people are killing innocent people because they devoted a great deal of effort to being monstrous, and monsters are all that they should be thought of or remembered as.

There's an emergency gag order in place, and most press aren't reporting what's happening other than the vague "something is happening".

My heart goes out for those currently suffering and mourns for the loss of innocent lives.

I hope the Parisian strike teams route out those who've done this swiftly, and end them before they can further the harm they've done.

Sky News shouldn't be reporting it. From what I can see everyone else has shut up about it. Even random people on Twitter won't tweet anything just in case.

Actually it got real speed because the French where reluctant to fight in operation Iraqi Freedom, because they thought that the case for WMDs was weak and that invading would do more harm then good.

12 years later and here is the harvest of that particular fuckup.

At least we didn't hear until the explosions and gunfire part. Or, at least, no one here mentioned any mention of any sort of setup / preparation that might have tipped their hand.

No, this is happening because human beings can be real shitty sometimes. We hardly need to invent monsters or pretend that crisis can only be borne out from Hell's own mouth.

Understanding motivations has practical value, and is not at all the same thing as excusing behavior.

Shit, I am getting flashbacks to when I first heard about the 2011 Utoya attacks here in Norway.

I want to know more, I want to know that the situation in under control, but I don't really want to hear about people dying right at this moment.

This is absolutely the wrong attitude to have, for so many reasons. First off, to say that this is the action of "inhuman monsters" is to deny the capability for evil that humans possess. Second, if you actually want to combat this sort of atrocity, you need to understand why it happened. Think of the fire triangle - this sort of thing doesn't happen in a vacuum, and the only way to stop it is to break the system that engenders it.

All Schools and Universities in France will be closed tomorrow. Which makes sense.

Le Monde are quoted as saying the attacks took place in 7 different locations. Also, one of their reporters has been shot in the arm.

Apparently they're sure at least one of the explosions was a suicide bomber. They suspect the others were too.

There's some really horrible stories coming through of dismembered bodies being found at the Bataclan.

Fricking... okay they're talking now about a shooting at Les Halles shopping center. Is that new? Is that one of the ones I missed from earlier?

It won't be a surprise. The tactics for this are pretty wildly known internationally. Police/SWAT/Anti-terrorism/military units will go in through all of the entrances. You go through all of the entrances because you generally have no idea where people are, and to prevent hostage takers from getting out. Flashbangs will be used. Once those are used, then the hostage takers know what's coming.

If they really want to try to push back the attack, then it just takes some cameras, a spool of wire and a handheld screen to have that kind of info. And it doesn't require going on twitter. The reason for the gag order has nothing to do with giving the terrorists warning. But on preventing there to be lots of footage of the hostages coming out and the likely bodies coming out.

And just for the record, its not religion, 40 years ago these same people would have been killing in the name of Communism. Before that Pan-Arab Nationalism. Before that anti-colonialism. Before that Anti-Ottoman.

They also had the Resistance. And I didn't use the term "decimation" lightly - it's worth reading exactly how much of a meat grinder WWI was for the countries involved, especially France, who's countryside still bears the scars a century later.

Apparently someone was arrested near it, but given how chaotic things are right now that could be anybody.
