Hey I feel like this a dumb question but can anyone explain to me what hacking actually does
On heroes it disables everything except running and shooting (so a hacked soldier 76 wouldn't be able to use rockets, heal pod, or sprint until after the hack wears off)
On health packs it makes it so the enemy cant pick up the hacked pack and the pack also respawns faster after use

Not quite, it doesn't disable passive abilities, including sprint.

I find it incredibly frustrating when Sombras are all like "use the health packs so I get ult faster" but then don't hack any that are useful to the team.
Plus once she has ult I reckon she should stop hacking health packs except what she needs to flank so as not to keep sucking up potential support ult charge.

that's especially moronic given that sombra's ult is the absolute worst part of her kit
Hey I feel like this a dumb question but can anyone explain to me what hacking actually does
Hack is basically a silence, it stops heroes from using any active abilities or ults. It will also interrupt any abilities that are considered channeled, such as whole hog or deadeye. Basically if a flash bang or hook will interrupt it, so will hack. For ults like Soldier 76's aimbot, Bastion's tank mode, or Genji's dragonblade, it will still stop them from using any other abilities, but they'll still keep their special ability going. If the enemy has their ult at 100% when hacked, a little check mark will be visible to all teammates above the enemy. Finally you can use hack on health kits, which will speed up the pack regen to every 6 seconds, prevent enemies from using it, and it'll count any healing done as by Sombra, contributing to her ult charge.
Hack lasts for 6 seconds, health kits last for a minute, hacked Torb turrets last for 10 seconds.
One last thing to remember is that while hack blocks ability usage, it doesn't affect their cooldowns. If hanzo just fired a scatter arrow and then you hack him, he'll still have another scatter in 10 seconds, his normal CD time.

I dunno dude, a good Sombra ult wrecks my shit, especially if her target priority immediately afterwards is really good.
Like, there are many comp matches where you gotta drop the Rein shield or get D. Va out of mech or kill the Mercy before you can unload your ult economy into the other team... but a Sombra can potentially do all those things at once with 1 button press.
I reckon it's more the fault of teams not knowing how to play WITH a Sombra that her EMP is a bit weak. It does very little on its own, I give you that, which is arguably a big weakness. But IMHO it's no different to Nanoboost or Supercharger (interestingly, all ults added post-release) in that how effective it is isn't dependent on the provider of the ult, but on the rest of the team.

and as a minor tangent but to emphasise Kana's post above, EMP or hack will also interrupt any abilities that a flashbang can interrupt
that includes Mercy's guardian angel or Reinhardt's charge, which makes them abilities that can be disabled AFTER their respective button has already been pushed
I get knocked out of the air by that at 0:45 in this clip (from the weekend just gone), but luckily wasn't low hp so Sombra couldn't see me through walls to shut out my Resurrect completely:

Symm turrets as well
Why would you hack a sym turret?!
you can't even target symm turrets, but if they're in zone of EMP they'll be disabled for 10

I have a 1-11-1 win rate in competitive with Mei, get abused by a teammate every game, yet enjoy playing Mei anyway.
Is there a name for this? A support group?
Is that Win - Loss - Tie?
Because if a character you play a lot is a near guarantee loss for you and you're taking that into competitive, you're handicapping five other people and that's kind of shitty.

it's not their fault that the matchmaker is taking time getting them to their MMR
I don't get the SR loss system. I lost 40 rating when it was their group of 5 against our group of none, but I win a game where we had less team SR and get 12. How am I supposed to get anywhere if it's supposed to be a 50/50 win/loss but I lose almost 4x as much for a loss as I get for a win?

I like how you assume I'm the shitty one.
I had a run of payload maps and my Mei was literally the only one consistently trying to be on payload (and succeeding enough to cards in pretty much all games). Only so much you can do.
PS. Are you the Soldier76 that hangs way back like he thinks he's Widowmaker? Hello again

really though i think fine skill difference is far less important to playing a character passably well than if youre confident enough to play aggressively rather than hang back and try to fling missiles from your safe space. aggressively moving forward widows are fantastic

this is a tough one, because I've been both the person who wants to play as someone with a bad win percentage AND the person being annoyed at someone else for playing someone with a bad win percentage
I think ultimately, it's gonna be about why you're playing this game
the culture around competitive at the moment is about working together to win; sometimes this means playing someone you don't wanna play to be able to win, or it means letting someone else play someone they're comfortable with (even if you disagree with the pick) to ensure the win
I'm reading ameybes' point as it not mattering what their win/loss record is with Mei or how other people treat them when they play Mei, they just wanna play Mei anyway, which is great! the more you play her, the more likely you're going to get better at her, so those might turn into wins some days
and that said, there are plenty of Genjis who persist even when they're being hard-countered, no one swapping to Winston when we have a Genji absolutely wrecking our shit, no one going hitscan to deal with the Pharah, etc etc etc
so if you wanna play Mei and some people don't see why you're playing her (doesn't even have to be win percentage; it can be ult synergy, not enough dps, etc), then that kinda abuse is more or less expected; that doesn't make it OKAY, but if the other 5 people on the team wanna win, they're going to find people to blame and often the least synergistic or most off-meta pick (or the hero they themselves don't know how to play) is going to be the target

we lost round 1 on Oasis yesterday and one dude was all - "I'm so fucking sick of filling for r----ds"
like, full on tilting the rest of the team even though it was only ROUND 1 that we lost, and not even by very much
but whatever I switch from Tracer to Mercy so that we can all swap classes around, try something different, etc
I then get told later on that I'm a "trash mercy" cuz I haven't used my res at all
I lose it, call him a child for tilting the team after *round 1* on a KotH map, and on top of that note that the reason is we keep dying one at a time with no tempo and no picks and FUCK YOU YOU OBVIOUSLY DON'T PLAY SUPPORT SO STFU and block him
I occasionally hear the rest of the team responding to him in chat or /t, most of it bad (one of the solo queues on the team was like "every time you talk I hear the voice of someone whose parents didn't love him enough")
we (predictably) lose and I type into /m "watch this, [name] is gonna complain about our team even though he was the one who straight up tilted the rest of us with his shitty attitude"
disappointingly(?), he leaves the game without another word that I can hear or see and my team confirms he didn't say anything before leaving
so yeah, some folks are just shitheels who think they can play as all 24 heroes and know everything about what's happening on the map at all times
I especially dislike it when people who instalock DPS tell healers how to heal... it's like, nope, if you think you can do this better than me, you're more than welcome to, cuz I wanna win, but you're not going to cuz you don't actually know what you're talking about so please GTFO of my face plz and ty
I think players who use POTG or medals as their primary or sole measure of good performance get confused that this doesn't directly relate to wins and lash out at their perceived inferiors.

If your Soldier 76 or Roadhog gets the gold healing medal, something's wrong. If you get the gold objective kills medal with "1", something's wrong.
I get what you mean, that it's a team game and a lot of performance that leads to success isn't performance that shows up in POTG or medals, but they can definitely tell you things.

My favorite is when I'm holding down the point entirely by myself as Lucio or Zen and the Reaper/Widow/Genji spams "Need healing!" from a bunker in an undisclosed location.
I think players who use POTG or medals as their primary or sole measure of good performance get confused that this doesn't directly relate to wins and lash out at their perceived inferiors.
And those can't even capture certain kinds of game winning contributions, like Torb turret placement shutting down Pharah, or Sym completely denying a flanking route, funneling enemies into your team's field of fire.
I've had that happen when I've been healing and I just spam "need healing" back at them until they shut up and find me
I use hello because that come to me for healing one never ever works for me. ( A lot of the need's healing spammers are just toxic jerks, but there's that small percent that calls it just to get any kind of response and then they come find you!)

Mmmm I can't agree there.
They are useful indicators, but thinking you got your OK medals and you're done is a great way to forge a warped perspective on your actual contribution to winning/team play.
I've only used "need healing" in like...3v3 matches where someone is playing like, soldier 76 and I legit need to remind them what they can do, or when I'm right on top of a mercy and she's ignoring me, which...neither of those happen very often. Other than that, if I'm really desperate, I'll go find a health pack or something
