I have no regrets of coming back to this game after not playing since a couple months after launch and then boosting a mesmer, and chronomancer is so fucking great. I really can't wait to try out mirage.

Man, I still want to go through living story season 1 stuff, my first hiatus was just before SAB2 when living story content was coming fast and furious, things would pop up then disappear for good and I burned out hard. Came back at Season 2, so missed a ton, I knew who Rox and Braham were but hadn't met the rest of the guys. I think its kinda sad that because they made huge map changes you cant really go back easily and play kessex before shit exploded, or Lions Arch before it got wiped out etc etc. Some really good content was created and you dont really get to see it anymore. really sucks for new players too.

You still see some of the old maps in some personal story missions. It's weird going through old Lion's Arch during the undead attack on it quest.

I just got back into this recently and sweet christ ANet has added SO MUCH STUFF since I last played years ago. It's almost overwhelming how much there is now. I've started chewing on HoT content and while I like a lot of the ideas they put in the area, getting around is kind of a fucker.

It's not the up and downs of the area that bother me, it's the enemy population that makes it a pain to get around. I'm really hoping with PoF coming out they'll dial it down a little for the HoT areas because it's not a fun time trying to wade through fifty Mordem/Chak/packs of Pocket Raptors simply to get from point A to point B. I had to get help from the guild last night just to do that in order to finish a non-instanced story mission.

Tuning in HoT is really odd. People running bursty classes like guardian, ele, and thief in high offense gear can blow apart most of the mobs with impunity and only really get into trouble during events with other players scaling the mobs up. Other classes like warrior and chrono (less so base mesmer) with good AoE abilities can cleave mob packs in melee range down rather quickly too. Almost every mob type that gives people trouble has some sort of trick to it or a unique tell before their most troublesome trick, eg rolling devils have really weak break bars and even a 1 second cripple effect will act as a multi-second stun on them. But learning all those tells when so many mob types are running around isn't easy and not everyone goes into the content with the same level of familiarity with game mechanics or equipment.

TD is especially annoying even if one can comfortable traverse the other maps since many mobs there don't show up on the preceding maps or are rare there and chak density is especially high and they often appear from nowhere. I make a habit of always slotting in a stun break or stability skill when dealing with chak because a bad knockdown can quickly become fatal.

HoT maps are annoying when you start on them. Once you start levelling up your masteries, particularly gliding and mushrooms, they get easier. Once you can use updrafts it opens up immensely since an updraft 'reloads' your glider. When you get the unlimited gliding mastery it's all gravy. Same with bouncing mushrooms.

Given the history of storytelling in GW2, it's probably best to not get too attached to any npcs you know.

Sorry, but the moment you saw Braham and his mom start to repair their relationship in LIving Story S2 (or whatever it was), that was a clear sign that one of them isn't going to make it.

I'm playing though LS2 again on my Rev. At Chapter 4 regarding Queen Jenna.

Still really enjoy Revenant, although I'm having a hard time deciding what other soul to use. Shiro the Assassin is a given. His self quickness buff is just so badass. But I alternate between Demon and Dwarf for various reasons. I like the Demon because it makes me a little bit stronger against condition heavy enemies, and the little jump ability is nice as well. But it also feels like it's oriented more towards condition builds (which I am not).

Once I unlock shields I'll probably switch to Glint anyways....I wish I had more time to play.

    Maly is best at condi.

For power solo base rev use Jallis and Shiro, don't forget that the dwarf heal clears condis and you can spec to clear them on legend swap. Also the shiro heal is a nice bit of DPS so use it liberally before switching off to another legend.

Once you get herald unlocked Glint/Jallis is the stardard combo, though Shiro is a fine alternative to the dorf when you're running around on your tod.

Project update from me! How's everyone else getting on?

    The Shining Blade
GW2efficiency says I now need about 700 gold worth of materials to finish this up. Not too bad considering how it was over 800 two nights ago.
I do still need to buy about half of the Gift of X recipes though so that's another 40-50 gold in expenditures, but the other parts that are pure money (the mystic runestones) is done.

The major material costs still left are:
the amalgamated gemstones (still need 127 of those) which on most nights I'll get two of from doing the AB and TD metas. I've made a note to do VB's as well even if it's not a great map because one only needs to get credit from a night boss kill for a hero's choice chest even if the overall meta fails to hit maximum security level. VB is obviously a lot longer to go through than AB or TD, but I also roam around between defense phases and can gather resources and use up crow bars while running supplies and escorts.
About 6k Elder Wood logs and 6k Mithril ore plus about 2.5k of whatever t5 fang, bone, or venom sac is cheapest because mystic curios are really resource hungry. Players like me are why the price of t5 venom sacs has now risen to parity with t5 fangs.
33 mystic coins which thankfully is a smaller number than when I learned that mystic anomaly events/bosses will reward one of these a day. A lot of the zones the fight can occur in are filled with platinum ore nodes too which I need so I spend some time gathering while waiting for the event to pop.
T6 bones, blood, dust, etc. which I steadily but randomly chip away at through unbound magic and daily winterberry farming. Anything beyond what I need gets thrown onto the TP, including all Karka shells and converting pristine toxic spores to toxic focusing crystals to sell.

I'm getting a pretty steady supply of money now from T4 fractals and multiple AB metas a day plus daily Tequatl. And the fractals obviously made the stabilizing matrices go really quickly plus provide a healthy amount of t5 materials with the other two money makers supplying ectos. I then blow the money on materials for mystic curios.

I still need to take some time and do a TD completion so I should probably find an hp train some day.

Aurora, or at least the achievements to unlock the collection
I got about halfway through finding Zinn's recordings before reading up and realizing the eater gadget it unlocks uses unbound magic. So I've pulled back and made a note to do the other similar ones that are of more use first.
I still need a lot of achievements for LS3 meta-achievements. Will probably at least start plugging away at the mastery points on the maps soon since I need those to finish up my last Hot mastery.

Playing my DragonHunter a fair bit, did some more Hero Points on her slowly building up so I can unlock the next elite spec on her. Working on Tangled Depths map completion, Just have to do the meta on Dragon's Stand and that will be done too. Just a bit more exp to finish off Itzel line, will do Nuloch next that will be a few mastery points (haven't done a ton of the adventures so that should clear out a few)

Finished the "do things" stuff after running round the world infusing things with Goldy yesterday/Wed. Now on the "throw money at it stage" - may pause here to see what materials do with PoF.

I got to 77 Mystic Clovers for The Ascension and then burned out hard. I spent all my gold and dumped nearly everything I had in Material Storage that I didn't need either immediately for a Gift of Fortune or later for a Gift of Wood, transmuted up a whole ton of crafting mats, did a Winterberry farm (part of why I burned out) and opened up several Magic Warped and... still only had enough gold + mats to get to 250 Vials of Powerful Blood and Ancient Bones.

Legendary crafting is *misery*. I think I need a break. :\

I make a habit of always slotting in a stun break or stability skill when dealing with chak because a bad knockdown can quickly become fatal.

As a followup on how odd the tuning in HoT is, late last night insomnia encouraged me to take my guardian through the TD story missions. Whereas my other characters that have gone through TD to date (Mesmer, Necro, Thief, Warrior) had some trouble at some point, my guardian just killed every single chak in his way between Teku Nuhoch and Rata Novus. And then proceeded to get the Chak Killer - Master achievement solo. Guardians are slow on the move and squishy but Dragonhunter makes them really, really good at killing large mobs like veteran chak. My armor and accessories on the guardian are probably better than most but it was still jarring how easy this character found it compared to previous ones.

That little escapade plus finally dragging my butt over to the Nuhoch Lane insight point (which I really could have done long ago given that I usually do the Nuhoch lane in the TD meta event) gave me the chapter meta achievement and the last few mastery points I needed to finish up all the non-raid HoT masteries.

I also wrapped up the Conspiracy of Dunces achievement earlier tonight. Damn Bloodstone Fen events kept popping up and getting in my way when I just wanted to find journal entries. With how hard I've been hitting AB metas and Winterberries, Princess just wasn't cutting it alone anymore. I'm up to about 2 bank rows of just Dragonite Ore even with making some into bars for future use.

How do you get started in Heart of Thorns? I did the first story mission and now my next step is to earn the Gliding mastery. Verdant Brink is really tricky to navigate without access to the glider, and Dry Top looks completely inaccessible thus far. What's a good strategy to earn that first mastery level so I can get my glide on? Grind mobs? Look for events? Adventures? Cry in a corner?

Run around doing events nearby. You can get around without gliding, but its a longer run. The only area you can get HoT mastery in right now would be Verdant Brink, but once you get gliding it all opens up for you.

It sounds silly, but I forgot how important Alts are to my enjoyment of an MMO. I kinda felt lost on my Engineer - didn't really have a goal in mind, was just kinda going through the motions of dailies and running world events here and there. Was just treading water until PoF. But then I decided to jump on my Mesmer who was 70-ish and get her up to 80 and redo the HoT quest line and it's like playing all over again for the first time.

Don't burn out - roll alts.

Events are always good. Adventures also can be a good chunk the first time you get a bronze or silver that day (don't try going for gold yet unless you really want to). If VB's night meta-event pops up when you're in the zone, you probably will get a good chunk of exp if you stick around but you'll be a bit limited in what you can do (basically don't venture too far from a chosen defense point in search of supplies and escorts) and the only night boss you'll be able to reach is likely to be the wyvern matriarch that hangs out above the Pact Encampment canopy (assuming you get enough exp for gliding which is hard to imagine not getting).

Dry Top is a pre-expansion zone. You get to that via Brisbane Wildlands.

Dry Top may feel inaccessible if you're not using the aspect crystals, those replace your weapon skills with movement abilities that make it easier to traverse the area. IIRC, at the start (coming from Brisbane) there's a waterfall that knocks you back if you don't dash past it.

I'll try that, thanks! I've got half a level so I'm hoping to knock out the other half tonight.

Unlocking masteries is a matter of gaining XP. Gaining XP goes MUCH faster if you use boosts, and there's lots of different types you can stack.

    1) Guild hall buff. Go to the the guild hall, find the tavern, and take a swig of XP boost. It's free and it lasts for a long time and doesn't drop when you die.
    2) Halloween food. It's the best XP food there is, it's cheap, and it's easy to come by since we get deluged with it every October. There might be some in the guild bank, if not search the TP for Glazed Peach Tart, which is probably the cheapest high-level Halloween food (it's 5 copper each as I write this).
    3) Utility buff (maintenance oil, sharpening stone, etc). Nearly any utility buff will give you +10%, but if you want the best available go with a Potion of Slaying Scarlet's Armies. That's 15% and it's 5 silver each on the TP.
    4) Guild Banner. Find someone with an XP banner or a Heroes banner and click on it. People will sometimes put these near waypoints, so be on the lookout for them. You can buy your own with guild commendations from the commendation vendor if you prefer.
    5) Fireworks. Items like Lucky Draketail give a temporary XP boost. This one is annoying since it doesn't last very long and you have to reapply it, but they are cheap on the TP so you might as well.
    6) Actual boosters. You can get these from various Black Lion sources, so you may or may not have any. If you've been holding on to some in your bank, now is the time to actually use them. Especially good are Birthday Boosters, which you get any time one of your characters has a birthday. If you've had an account for at least a year, check your alts to see if they have any waiting for them in the mail.
    7) Enrichment (what used to be called infusion). This only applies if you have an ascended amulet with an enrichment slot that you can put an enrichment into, so may not apply to you, but if you have this and forgot now's the time to bring it out.

I think that's it. Stack these puppies up and you'll be gliding in no time!

Awesome, thanks! I have a few boosters in my bank that I can use, I'll look into using those in Verdant Brink. I haven't joined a guild, I'm mainly a solo player.

Can someone help me out, I got a lvl 80 engineer with exotic gear, base game only, and I'm looking to see what I could upgrade. There's ascended stuff, would aiming to make an ascended rifle be something that makes sense to do or is there something in expansions that would make it much easier so I'd be better off waiting with ascended crafting until I buy that?

There's fractals, I remember running some of them 2 years ago, what's expected of me if I just join random groups in the LFG UI? Does world completion award you anything special?

I'm not an Engineer expert, or even a novice for that matter, so I will leave class specifics to someone more qualified.

You may know all this already, so I apologize if this is rudimentary stuff, but I think the big thing that people should concentrate on for gear at 80 is making sure you have an idea in mind for your build. Even if you have all exotic gear (which is perfectly fine for 90% of the game) is it all the right gear? Are you going for a power or condition build? Does your gear reflect that in its stats? I actually just crafted myself a full Viper's exotic set for my Mesmer as I am moving towards condition damage for a while. Before that my stats were all over the place.

Next up, you might start working towards ascended trinkets as they are the easiest things to get. You can usually get these for decent prices through whichever game mode is your favorite (PvP, WvW, Fractals, etc.) with laurels, guild points, badges or even story achievements.

While you are getting those, you can start working towards an ascended weapon, but you need a 500 crafter and lots of gold, or just lots and lots of gold. GW2 Efficiency puts the cost of a ascended Berserker rifle right now at almost 78 gold if you bought everything. https://gw2efficiency.com/crafting/calculator/a~0!b~1!c~0!d~1-46768

For me, the thing I love about GW2 and why I keep coming back is that I can make progress on all these things, without rushing to them and burning out. I had to stop for awhile because I tried to be too hard core and running 3 or 4 characters through maps doing nothing but mining, logging and harvesting so I could get more ascended stuff. Now that I have stopped that and just slowly work through things, I'm much happier.

What's the cheapest way to get Exotic level 80 armor? I'm finally toming up some of my alts in preparation for PoF, since it looks like we may get easier ways to get lower-level mats now, and I'd like to gear them out with at least something rudimentary. I currently have 30k karma, 500 Badges of Honor, 20 gold, and somewhere around 200 of each Dungeon token except Citadel (where I only have 6)

I've had this guide from the wiki in a tab for about a week now. Covers a variety of ways to get armors, trinkets, etc.

Are there any groups/people that have a fractals night or anything? Been wanting to delve further in to them since I've only done a handful of the tier 1.

    Project update!

I completed my ascended warhorn, The North Wind!

I'm just a few items away from completing TWO Mawdreys... one for me, one for Belasco.

I have my Gift of the Raven Spirit for Legendary Nevermore!!!

    I need the following things:

    Gift of Nevermore
Gift of Energy: All the non-crystalline dust.
Gift of the Mists: complete the last two sections of the Gift of Battle reward track, buy enough Memories of Battle for the Gift of War.

    Gift of Maguuma Mastery

Gift of Maguuma: two hero points in DS and about half of Tangled Depths.
Gift of Insights: Itzel and Nuhock masteries 4 and 5, and ley line gliding. This will take a long time because it needs about 50 more mastery points and I only have 15.

We don't have a specific fractals night AFAIK, but a shout out in guild usually finds some interested folks!

Was working on Nevermore myself, but might swap that to a rifle legendary.. but who knows, the materials make me want to pull my hair out, and I cant do what I did last time and just drop $$$ on gems to gold and buy a bunch of shit off the TP.. haha oh Sunrise.. I had it easy with you and it still was a pain. Maybe just jumping through hoops to make cool precursors would be fine :D Then again, I assume the new elite specs will come with there own Ascended weapon collection.

of course to make myself feel worse I hit spidy to check current $$ to gem to gold conversions haha $100 US wouldnt even get me halfway to buying the crap for it.
