My super-left US coworker is against the ACA because he sees it as a handout to insurance companies, so maye they're trying to co-opt that talking point and get the far left to attack the ACA?
How does that argument end with anything other than reducing profits and power for insurance companies though?
Attacking insurance costs in arguments/statements from both sides helps the left only.
Because it's anti-ACA? That is their first and only priority. It's not like they're going to pass a more socialist healthcare system regardless of how popular it is.

It is, because prescriptions like that are required to be free at the point of purchase under the ACA. Make it non-prescription and you lose that coverage. Even though it makes sense to be OTC.
I caught up with the earlier parts of the debate. That was a really bad showing by the Republicans. They had no effective emotional answer to the objections to the cuts and the loss of preexisting conditions protections. Tired and stale statements about big government and a pathetic attempt at painting themselves as the enemies of insurance companies.

I don't think so, not to any huge degree. Like most conversations about politicy issues, I'd assume the effect has to be cumulative so one debate shouldn't be overhyped.
There was enough information and detail that people who maybe didn't know much about the ACA could be now motivated to look into it more. I think the GOP essentially used it as a 90 minute soundbite platform to wheel out the same arguments they've been making in bad faith since Bill Clinton. Ultimately there's a portion of people who don't give a shit about the actual law and just want white guys to show that uppity Obama that his plan sucks for 'real muricans'.
The soundbite track may come back to bite them during upcoming campaigns. I've even seen suggestions floated that some in the GOP want to recall McCain so he can fight cancer and win without worrying about voting in DC. Which is sad, because they thought he was basically Captain America when he flew out for the other healthcare repeal legislation... right up until he voted no and the party had a collective rectal prolapse.
Maybe all the drama and debates will get people to stop assuming it's not their congress-critter, it's everyone else that's the problem.

One of the most frequently used phrases when it comes to opposing policy is "we need to have a discussion first." The Republicans go to that often and they use it all the time with healthcare, even when it comes to repealing something that is already law. Tonight was their chance for discussion.
On the one hand they get the thing they usually feign a desire for and can't complain anymore. On the other, it doesn't matter specifically because of how fast and sneaky they've been with this legislation. At best it's credibility ammunition for non-Republicans.

I have some very libertarian/conservative/maybe-anarcho-capitalist family members. They see it as business colluding with the government through lobbyists to get paid. So because it's "government doing stuff not explicit in the constitution" it's bad.
I was surprised the first time I saw the "insurance company handout" argument coming from one of my libertarian family members, but it makes sense from their perspective in a "government interfering in the free market" kind of way.
I thought Sanders did well in the "debate" and didn't beat the socialism / single payer drum TOO hard. It was there and he made a few points about it but mostly focused on the terrible impacts of the Cassidy-Graham bill.
Klobuchar was way more likeable than anyone else on the stage I thought and played the good "moderate" vs Bernie.
How anyone watched this thing and came away believing anything Cassidy said or liking him even the tiniest bit is a mystery.

But then I've already examined my stance on the issue pretty damn thoroughly and I pretty well knew what everybody was gonna say.
