If we are ever going to see something that really matches up to Voltron except whatever Lotor makes from the meteor. Feels like the team is only ever really challenged because they can't form Voltron. Even when attacked by an entire Navy's worth of ships they pretty much wrecked. This isn't a complaint. So far they've done a good job of creating stakes and drama without anything being able to challenge Voltron. Its just unexpected.

Voltron has been consistently challenged and smashed around by Haggar's Robeasts. Standard Galra seem to stand basically no chance, which is good.

Have they? I may be misremembering
My recollection is the team always having team issues that kept them from working together and after solving it nothing could really stand against them. The fact that the only time Voltron really fights anything these season was them vs an armada and pretty much a nonthreat may be clouding my memory.

The Cyclops robeast in season 1 basically wrecked Voltron and they couldn't kill it until the planet took it out for them, the vacuum-mouth beast at the start of season 2 was similarly shitkicking them until the blade of marmora dude sacrificed himself.
The others have all given them a pretty hard time, and Zarkon in his armor almost killed them until Shiro got Blazing Sword working.
Robeasts have consistently managed to knock them around, but there's been little sign that they were in imminent danger of losing, because Voltron's just that tough.
It's like fighting a new boss in a video game; you don't know their attacks, you don't know their weak points, but you do have tons and tons of health.
then it's just a matter of holding out until you realise that they're left open after their AoE attack, and you've won.

Season 3
Voltron barely showed up this season.
That was a kinda weird.

They played this well by usually having multiple other people that they have to save. So, even if Voltron could survive, the castle, the Balmorans, the village, ect ect wouldn't survive if they fail.

The worst that's happened to any Lion or Voltron so far is powering down. They might be actually literally indestructible.

This....might actually be the case.
It IS made out of something that
S3 spoilers
is technically a trans-dimensional material.
Can't blow up something that exists in literally every possible dimension.
There's some kind of feedback mechanism in place, the Paladins definitely feel threatened when they're under fire, and Zarkon's Dark Quintessence felt like it was even a level beyond that.
But despite being machines that can be altered and interface with other non-voltron tech(thanks Pidge!), we never see any kind of physical damage on the Lions and no mention is ever made of needing to repair them after a tough battle.
I dunno if the show will call attention to it, but I'm pretty firm on the theory.
The paint always looks worn and chipped even when they were brand new.

In season one the Lions looked like they might be knocked out permanently by basic weaponry.

The Coalition is a real deal now, which is cool. Lotor is up to shit now, also cool. Pidge's episode made me cry twice, and I'm real glad Matt survived and that he doesn't overshadow Pidge at all.
It doesn't feel as dramatic as last season, though. Lots of buildup with no real payoffs.
boyfriend and I started watching this about a month ago and were pretty sad when season 3 ended so quickly, but then super happy to find out the next chunk was out so soon.
This show is real good. I have really foggy memories of the original from when I was a kid so it was interesting coming into something with some strong history really fresh.
season 4 spoilers
Pidge's episode was easily the most emotional I've got in the show. the fakeout at the graveyard was foreshadowed to heck but I got caught up by the sheer number of graves and how tragic that was.
I hope we get to see more of Keith in the future, I've really enjoyed how well he and Shiro play off each other. Their little fairwell handshake + hug was great.
I'm pretty keen to see just what Lotor is planning at this point. Will he go full Zuko and convert or does he still have some deep plan going on here. Just what IS his end goal, anyway!

"I help you take down my father and you support me in ruling the smaller Galra empire made of planets who actually want to remain in it."
Yeah, basically Zuko. They will probably need all the help they can get to fight the alt-Alteans in the upcoming inevitable conflict.

Lotor hasn't actually done anything super villainous.
He has been surprisingly level headed and reasonable for the son of a huge ass dick.

Straight up killing one of your most subordinates counts as villainous, though!
A good/neutral guy would have restrained her, or knocked her out.
ruthless pragmatism =\= villainous
It was a split second decision to save himself and his crew. It's not like he was punishing his subordinates for failing him, he was trying to survive with his men.

It's not as split second a time frame as you think. I truly believe that Lotor had shown enough skill that in the moments between realizing that Narti's been compromised and imminent death by Galra cruisers, he would have been able to subdue her without killing. That he immediately went for the kill just shows that he drops anyone working for him the moment they're not useful.
I'm willing to admit, though, that maybe "villainy" isn't the word that would best describe Lotor's actions re:Narti. But just because he hasn't done any mustache twirling and maniacal gloating doesn't mean the show's not presenting him as a bad guy.

They were under attack by the entire Galra fleet, their whole plan was upturned, they had NO time to figure out a new plan, and it appeared one of the teammates was compromised.
There wasn't time to figure out the most optimal solution.
