Right, only two monsters in 3 had natural purple on their weapons, but that game only went to high rank. Blue was enough to not bounce in most cases, and white took care of things like Barroth's Head, cooled-down Agnaktor, Jho's chin, and Uragaan's non-under sides. Thing is, monsters had much more base HP in MH1, 2, and 3, so going up to purple in 3's high rank made sense, and made it more-feasible to solo the quests.
Tri was generous about sharpness. Like MH1, it was not used against the player save for where it was part of a specific monster's gimmick.
MH1 hadn't yet gone down the sharpness rabbit hole that started in G/Freedom and I greatly preferred it. You only worried about bouncing early on, when your sharpness dropped, and vs Gravios/Basarios, Lao, and Fatalis. Having to sharpen forced you to take a break from attacking, allowing a wounded monster a few opportunities to get away throughout a hunt. I've always taken issue with how they turned it into yet another hurdle and punishment for players; first with sub-species, then with higher-ranked monsters in Gen 2.

Anyone interested in numbers for those ice DB's in MHGU, I've compiled some data sets for G-Rank monsters and boosts:
Edit: The numbers are total damage dealt. Lists are now sorted from highest to lowest.
More Edit: Ice and slash vulnerability of the monster body part is now listed as the multiplier used by the game (0.65x = 35% reduction to your damage output)

Bet that trooper would still miss from that range.
I believe you would lose that bet. A clone trooper would hit his target.
Republic trooper, he's from the TOR lego stuff.

Lightning bow/lbg, cb, db all look to be good choices if you're comfortable with them - I have a feeling comfort with your weapon is gonna be more important initially while learning than attempting to optimize with a weapon you don't feel good about.
Otherwise, apparently, the best weapons to deal with kulve, come from kulve - imagine that.
This is the future. This is what we built. This is what we wanted. It must have been. Because we all had the fucking choice, didn't we? It is only our money that allows commercial culture to flower. If we didn't want to live like this, we could have changed it at any time, by not fucking paying for it.
So let's celebrate by all going out and buying the same burger. -transmet
I ended up getting handed an (opportunity to get) a free code for World with my new graphics card. I'm debating whether to try it out or just continue ignoring it. I still have plenty of stuff in GU I haven't even touched yet.

Given that I main Chargeblade (Diablos yawn) and bow (every element of note crafted to the maxxxxx), I should be good with Kulve, then?

If you haven’t played World at all, it’s at least worth securing the free copy to investigate at some point. World is a really good game.
Yup that's fine, like I said, I think comfort is most important initially anyway, since the fight is set up a bit differently than the previous stuff we've had on PC

Does this apply to gunlance? I’ve read the fight is pretty mobile, and gunlance is the opposite of that.

A wide build is great for the first phases, your shells do full damage irrelevant of Kulve's armor state. In the last phase your shield helps with her constant fire breath and your high pokes help hit her on the horns consistently, but for this stage I prefer using the Lance.
my preference for melee weapons on kulve are the hammer and insect glaive
hammer does very good damage, can pick up a knock-out or two, and is ridic in phase 2 or 4 where it can abuse terrain.
insect glaive isn't quite so strong on the first phases (keeping up your insect buff can be tricky since you don't get much of her body to target), but it's by far the most consistent horn damage of any melee weapon in the fourth phase, and can easily score a mount. got a lot of use out of elemental setups with it.
switch axe i found decent, but not at all ideal, and the lance, while safe, didn't seem to bring enough power to the table compared to the alternatives.

Pardon, I've now resorted the lists by damage.
Some of the targets are not weak to ice so I could see how much difference the elemental weakness makes. I've noted each body part's weakness to ice.
Elderfrost are pointless, being the best ice DB's for targets not weak to ice.
All boosts (or lack thereof) equal, Snow Slicers and Hi Twin Daggers are consistently top DPS so long as there's an ice weakness.
Gelid Mind and Giaprey Claws tend to be nearly or equally good, but only with sharpness up, element boosting skills, or both.
For whatever reason, Cool Cleavers are average-to-above, with the bonus of also being good on water-weakness.
Giant's Daggers tend to deal solid damage, but you'll have bouncing issues without Mind's Eye.
By my reckoning, figure out what boosts you'll run, then look at sharpness, slots, and ease of forging for the top contenders.
I've killed everything with the Longsword and I see no reason to change that just because there's a new monster.
You're a monster and everyone you team with secretly hopes your flaily wide area trippy-uppy weeb attacks.
Unless they're ranged then they don't care.
I am aware :P
Though when I venture into multi I mostly use bows, for this reason. And to not have to deal with the other charge bladers and longsworders.

You shouldn't have to deal with Charge Bladers, as they should be at the head.
Unless they're elemental blade users. Or there's a hammer user around.
I want elemental charge blades to be good. They're so VISUALLY EXPLOSIVE when you SAED and stuff goes everywhere, even though the Water one looks a little... questionable.
Anyone interested in numbers for those ice DB's in MHGU, I've compiled some data sets for G-Rank monsters and boosts:
Not that this affects the actual numeric data, but you should really interpret the intensity of an elemental weakness as a ratio of element:slash multiplier rather than basing it purely on the element number. You called Uragaan legs a minor weakness, but at 10:25 the ice multiplier is 40% of the physical myltiplier, which is really high (Macao head is just over 30% by comparison, which is about average for most monsters' biggest weakness).
Usually when I run these sorts of numbers I just abstract it to 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 ratios, since that covers the majority of relevant use cases. I guess dual blades are subject to more significant rounding errors than most weapons, though.

Appreciate the numbers wisdom. Will look into that soon.
Seems MHGU got an update today. Wonder what's been changed.
Edit: New monthly free DLC and Chinese language support (simplified and traditional).

I've been out of hunting for a good while, but never noticed any issues with hitting friendlies with the long sword after the initial hours of figuring it out. Even clipping someone with a wide horizontal by accident usually doesn't cause a flinch, but I'm possibly misremembering.

Live for clutch counters and helm breakers. :bro:
I think most people joining sos rock flinch free 1. I know I do. Thats enough to negate longsword friendly fire.
Lance is great for Kulve, too. The up stab hits the horns very nicely.
works okay but dps is low imo
lance compensates for damage with uptime but ime lance doesn't have particularly high uptime on kulve compared to anything else

Kulve is out on PC, only got one siege done last night but it went reasonably smooth, got the horns off on the 4th hunt as a 2man group.
