without having watched it yet, thinking about how they spent so many resources and sunk so much time and effort into "building out the lore of the nexus" and for the comics themselves to be complete shit, only for the "lore team" to be promptly dissolved.... (notice how we got nothing of the sort for Qhira)
i wonder if they should've even done Orphea to begin with. just seems like such a tremendous waste of resources only for it all to have gone away
i still like both of them tbh, but i seriously doubt that even if they didn't do Orphea to begin with it would've changed anything at all
but maybe we would've at least been able to stop pretending that the "lore" was anything more than a flimsy means of introducing an OC to the game. because holy SHIT those comics were SO bad and just nothing.

Making the lore super serious instead of fun and jokey was a mistake for sure
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I enjoy the characters, videos, and comics they made. The only negative impact was a delay on other Blizzard heroes. So I'm glad they did it.

I think it can probably be true that those things were technically mistakes while also the scale of the mistake relative to the games other problems is functionally zero.
The lore stuff had really no bearing on the success or failure of hots. In that sense it was a waste but people assign way too much fungibility to development resources.

It might be that it was actually a long shot attempt to save HotS. The formula of "just toss more Blizzard characters in there" wasn't working well enough, they must have known that at the time.

By "resources" I didn't mean "development resources". I know full well it didn't impact any other part of the game.
What I meant was that it was a shame that resources at all were devoted to it when it ended up being a bust. Like, all that time and effort put into it for, what? The lore team to dissolve and an incredibly lukewarm reception.
I just think it's sad, and that's what I meant by "a waste of resources". Why bother putting all this effort into something that came out to be so incredibly mediocre?
Maybe it's just a hindsight is 20/20 kinda thing, but. I dunno.
I kinda feel like they could have positioned Qhira as an potential Overwatch character instead of a Nexus original.
But she's not in Overwatch. At all.
Yup, that's why I mentioned her being a potential Overwatch character. Her story could have been set up to have her come from that world, and they could have started I introducing her in the occasional Overwatch short stories and comics (maybe a bounty hunter that almost caught Doomfist before Winston took him down?). Present her as one of the possible future characters that Jeff's team is working on.

In terms of opportunity cost, I don't think it cost the team much at all. Consider that the alternative to creating "HotS Lore" is most likely to not create any lore at all, because otherwise HotS has no lore. And in terms of magnitude of the "mistake" (assuming it was one, which I'm not convinced it was), it was miniscule.
I would have definitely preferred if they made shit up in one of the existing settings, like they did for Murky/Sgt Hammer/Lunara/etc. There are so many tertiary races/monsters in Warcraft alone, they could have come up with something to place Orphea and Qhira in there easily. Even if their abilities never actually appeared in the games.
You say that but I can totally imagine them making up a tauren with a chain sword and reddit just exploding with lore inaccuracies - complaining they dont get hero X instead
The only thing I didn't like was the fact that they didn't go over the biggest complaint I have with Qhira.
... she's left handed.
... like wtf?
God, what a blatant and shameless Link ripoff.

you have no damage? did they see your opponent? 3 tanks and a jaina who's entire damage is going to be negated by force of will.
you have fenix, who is high damage, malthael, who is a high damage bruiser, and medivh, who is like the highest damage mage in the game if played properly. people are stupid.

Yeah I was gonna say, it's easily Malthael's coolest looking ability. Malthael has a low bar for that, but still

You know I haven't played this in awhile, went back to league and every once in awhile hop back to this when promotions were going. But I'm shocked blizzard is closing this down. I can't see this losing money, even if it's not printing money like blizzards other games. But it has a dedicated fan base, puts people on your client, and has to be turning at least some profit. It's not my cup of tea but it's a fun enough game that did things different.

Best when paired with the clean wholesome mechanics of Varian IMO!
