It's very... sleepy. Lots of whooshy ambient filler tracks and bleep bloops and spacey ocean noises.
Not a whole lot of the piss and vinegar and righteous anger of like, Undertow.
This is Nap Time Tool
You just described literally every album that isn't Undertow!
10,000 Days had some grit to it. Vicarious, The Pot and 10,000 Days he gets pretty heavy vocally and used a little more range. In this one, even when he starts to get more intense it's like the production has him way in the back so it doesn't really come across as in your face.
I admittedly am not as familiar with Aenema or Lateralus.
The tracks are all individually fine and even good (although every single actual track clocking in at 10 minutes or longer feels a bit self-indulgent), but they don't feel like a cohesive whole in the way that Aenima, Lateralus, or 10,000 Days do. There's no real flow from song to song or a unifying "feel," for lack of a better term, for the whole album. It's just a collection of pretty good songs, each of which feel like they were written in a vacuum to stand on their own and not to form a particular collection of songs with a particular goal.
This is something I've noticed a lot of bands do after waiting a long time to put out a new album. It's like they try to cram every idea and riff and melody they've been working on for the last however many years into it and it comes across a little disjointed, meandering and bloated. Some stuff stands out and then other stuff is pretty meh.

Honestly I think there was a pretty cohesive album lurking in here, now that I've finished listen number two, but they needed to cut a lot of these songs down to 6 minutes and refine them. They overthought it.
Agreed. I'm also not a particular fan of filler tracks so a lot of those minute or two long spaces in between songs that were just noises or drum fills over other noises I didn't really care for. I get what they were doing with it but it's just a personal preference of mine.

Speaking of beautiful, soul touching songs, heard a tune last night and the lyrics were as follows
I'm a hard bass slut
I want the sound that gets me hot
Play the noise again again I want the bass that makes me wet
Dirty low frequencies I want to feel inside of me
Big fat hard kicks
Oh my god I want that shit
And they say poetry is dead. Music is such a blessing
Somebody I follow on twitter mentioned that they had this song stuck in their head a few days ago.
That reminded me that I like this song, so I listened to it a few times and now it's stuck in my head.
So I guess I'm passing on some kind of musical virus here
Saints is the Breeders song guaranteed to stick in my head for months.
"Summer is reeeeaaddddy, when you are..."
I have said it off and on for years in the fall in the winter in the southern hemisphere. and other places just I found it sad few people knew where it comes from less and less every year
Thurston Moore recorded a cover of the New Order track "Leave Me Alone" as a B-side for some upcoming live single 7-inch releases and I like it a whole lot.

Daniel Johnston has died. I was introduced to him, probably like most, by Kurt Cobain. I soon found myself looping his tape picked up from a half price bookstore as I studied, so I'll always associate his stuff, and my growing appreciation for DIY and outsider art, with barely passing high school chemistry.
He released an album just 2 months ago! He's one of those artists where I never really thought of his impact before today, but I realize now that I know the words to a LOT of his songs.
He was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer recently, which as if it needs repeated, cancer sucks, the dude clearly otherwise had a lot of life left in him.
Former Chairlift member Caroline Polachek's first solo album under her own name, titled Pang, is coming out 10/18 and along with the announcement she dropped a new single with the amazing title of "So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings."

I got to see him one time at a mega 80's show a few years back and he still kicked ass.

I have, it's good, and Tool are still great. I'll brook no disagreement
