Jeff's glowing praise of Control on the Bombcast this week pushed me over the edge to pick it up after some friends had suggested it because of the ray tracing side actually making use of my 2080 Ti.
Jeff was right, this game is great. It's also the first use of ray tracing where I think the tech speaks for itself. Brad noted it might be because this is the first time we've seen the tech married with actual art direction, and I'd agree. It's not just that the tech is fancy, Control seems to be the first use if it as something more than just a piece of tech but an actual enhancement of the art.
I really appreciate the effort put in for that pax panel but it’s a little bit tough to watch. I know that it can’t be easy doing that but it didn’t really land for me.

I'm quite the opposite, I'm loving it. Laughing my ass off.
It's definitely a panel that sounded like it was more fun to attend than watch.
Also, Jeff Gerstmann also sold me hard on/makes me want to play Control, but I have a puny old PC that lacks bells and whistles and also a skeptical distrust of the Epic Games Store, so if I get it I might have to pick up a PS4 copy (to play on my Pro, obv). Jeff Gerstmann enthusiastically espousing what he enjoys about a video game is always fun to listen to. Kinda reminded me of him gushing about Titanfall 2.
and also a skeptical distrust of the Epic Games Store
*eyeroll*
Any particular reason you feel that way, or were you just looking to unpleasantly dismissive and add nothing to the conversation?
Any particular reason you find the epic games store distrustful vs any pc digital only other game store?
Seems a little tone deaf to not understand why people dislike the EGS at this point. Shady business practices, a shady Chinese owner with a very checkered past, got their hand caught in the cookie jar scanning other launchers for data, glacial pace to add features while claiming to "compete" and be good for the consumer.
I've held my nose and bought a few things like Control and Metro, but I totally get why people find the EGS distasteful and choose not to support Epic and their business model.
Not here to get into it, but it is amusing to enjoy Jeff's take on a game, when he is firmly in the camp of thinking the arguments against the epic game store are silly

What do you think happens to the entire store system when fortnite finally falters in profit, or a competitor gets a new fortnite, and epic doesnt have anything to prop up the ecosystem? They will abandon that shit faster than the PVE side of fortnite. It's entirely propped up by that userbase, it doesnt meet the base standards for an online store yet and its been around for more than a year? Their paid exclusives are really a strategy of a bum rush to try and prop the whole thing up as well to lock people in, a money hole they can dump into right now while they try and do development(super slowly) in parallel. Make no mistake about it, they are in a very dangerous race here.
It's a very risky platform to support all around. I cash in my free games and sometimes play fortnite pve if I get a wild hair, but there's nothing there that would make me buy something there over steam.

I installed EGS for Rebel Galaxy Outlaw which was a relatively painless process. If buying and downloading other games continues to be as painless, I couldn't care less which monolithic Chinese surveillance company logs my porn

That's about where I'm at with it. Good on Abby and Jan for stepping up, and they certainly put the work in. But it just wasn't really for me.
I think at least part of it is how I feel about anything with a lot of audience participation;
I mean, there was that first time they tricked me into signing up for some email list with an opt out checkbox ("click here to not share your email with ____")
Epic's security seems pretty suspect as well since every time I turn on the launcher I have twenty friend requests from bots. PA recently did a comic and a news post about some reasons EGS is a little sketchy. There's plenty of very solid reasons to be a little skeptical of them and it's kind of frustrating hearing people just dismiss it as people not wanting another launcher when that's not really the issues people have.
But whatever, at least I am going to get Jeff's take on child-rearing for the next decade, that's actually exciting.
hush on
This is the future. This is what we built. This is what we wanted. It must have been. Because we all had the fucking choice, didn't we? It is only our money that allows commercial culture to flower. If we didn't want to live like this, we could have changed it at any time, by not fucking paying for it.
So let's celebrate by all going out and buying the same burger. -transmet

Also, some indies have reported that, after being offered an exclusivity deal by Epic and refusing, Epic blacklisted their game from selling on their storefront outright.

I am a lapsed Bombcast Aftermath listener, but I made sure to listen to the most recent one because Jeff saved his baby stories for it exclusively instead of talking about it on the Bombcast, which I guess is like how Waypoint had their game podcast and then they had their everything else podcast.

Respectfully, I think I'd take any pov from the PA guys with an extremely large grain of salt.
Also, they sell their games on Steam. So there's that.
Yeah, that's a shitty explanation.
First, it's clear what she meant in her original tweet. It wasn't "This guy is so normal looking and his wife is hot!"
Also, somebody not seeing your insult isn't an excuse for insulting them.
Finally, if what she meant in her original tweet wasn't meant to be mean then why would it matter if they were going to see the tweet or not?
I'm not saying Abby committed a crime or should be "cancelled" but it is a bummer to see someone you respect be a hypocrite so publically.
If it was a funnier joke it be easier to look past however shitty it is, unfortunately it's a bad joke, so it comes off as why are you being shitty for no reason

I do think she worded it poorly because she probably was so eager to gush about Cate Blanchett so she didn't think of how that post would come off, but this is not a huge deal at all
This really reminds me of how people get so flabbergasted about Hugh Jackman's wife, but it's like... whatever, they're normal, ordinary people married to marketable celebrities
Not only that, but doing the follow up tweet that is essentially "I never said the insult, I just heavily implied it, and if you have a problem with it, you're taking it wrong" is like....classic comedian doubling down on a joke that didn't do well.

Jeeze you guys lately.
The tweet is fine, funny even. He's a goofy looking dude married to freaking cate blanchette, everybody knows he's goofy looking, nobody is actually bothered by this. That tweet is super on brand for Abby, it's pro women, anti man in a playful way.
Believe me, I've engaged in some celebrity "He/she is with that person?! Wow, one of them is way hotter than the other!" type stuff before, as I think most of us have.
It's just that there's a good chance Cate Blanchett, you know, loves her husband and that's why she's been with him for 20+ years. And the joke Abby chose to tell is heavily predicated on the idea that because Cate Blanchett chose to be with this portly gentleman, divine intervention must have been involved.
Also, the defense of "well nobody involved will see this sorta shitty thing I said for no reason" isn't generally considered a great defense.
Again, I think Abby is great and it's ok to fuck up. It's just a good reminder of how we can all do better when it comes to how we treat people.
This hit it perfectly (and props to the GB community, I was expecting the worst in the comments and was pleasantly surprised).
I don't think Abby is a horrible person and I don't think she meant the joke to be cruel, but it definitely read as more mean spirited than she probably wanted, and like the blog mentions, hits a lot harder to people struggling with self image.
The tweet sucks, the response makes it much worse.
I’m 100% on board with anti-men jokes, but this isn’t that.

I'd guarantee it wasn't constructed with an intent to belittle his appearance, this is not an anti-men crusade let's not get dramatic about it. The optics were poor and people took it in (legitimate) ways that she probably wasn't aiming for

Intent is not the end-all and be-all, you can hurt people without intent just as easily as you can on purpose.
