On stuff. Main thing is that I put everything on my Corr and then jumped to Excelsior, since is the most populated. Been on this shard for a day or so and it is easier to get groups than in Indomitable, not to mention the lack of "gib farm plz" on LFG. Finding an available name that fits your concept sucks though, but that's what happens when you are the last kid at the crayon box. Had already moved all the inf from the chars that I didn't liked to my Corr and then deleted so it was just him and one that I made for playing around, more of that on a moment.

Second is that I finally bought + Catalyst all the Winter IOs for my Corr. Woo! Only missing a couple of sets and some small stuff here and there and done with his build. Incarnate stuff just comes naturally doing whatever, so been focusing on doing stuff that gives Reward Merits.

Third, is that I'm trying Titan Weapons for the third time, this time with Willpower on a Brute, since Willpower is Endurance friendly to help with TW, doesn't get much on the way and is very set-and-forget so can focus on the TW mechanic. Also made a very cool costume:

Been playing Rad/Bio scrapper a bit. Proton Sweep is pretty awful, it's the same cone as Shadow Maul, but some how just feels way weaker. Maybe the animation. However, I just got the damage aura power and it's pretty sweet.

Good luck with it! My only worry is that whiffing and not getting momentum will stack with whiffing and not getting rage to make some terrible vortex of bad luck.

It's been pretty good for me as a scrapper mix, with, uh, relevance to the upthread discussion about paladins.

And I finished my Corr's build, got all his Superiors and Purples and sets, woo! On the Incarnate front, found guides and they said that the most important thing is to get Alpha, Lore and Destiny to tier 3 since those slots at that level give an additional level on Incarnate content, so that's out of the way too.

And yes I'm celebrating, had to farm a lot of merits to get there the Hero side Weekly Task Forces have been the Shadow Shard ones for 3 weeks on a row. That's a lot of merits, but Rularuu hit really hard even on Incarnate characters.

Been checking the Excelsior part of the HC Discord and found this huge informative post about the game, so going to share it, since I found it useful:
    JJDraken wrote:
Things I've seen I felt I should probably share this.

Folks seem very unaware of a lot of things in CoH, be it they refuse to learn, don't truly understand this game, or their memories are horrible & most decide to believe false information over proper information. I also notice most don't attempt to learn stuff, just rather go into a farm or something hope no one notices they know nothing. That's fine, I guess. But down below I am going try provide information, perhaps ya'll can spread around to others.
    1. 90% Population(In my opinion). Should be Vigilante/Rogue. This opens up a lot of content for you to play. (I understand if your RP or Theme person, you gotta stick yer alignment.)

Now easiest way to do this. Null the Gull, you can literally collect 5 badges from the it, by swapping through all the alignments, if you want to step out to either side of Red/Blue for 2 more & another special one from him.

Doing this, all sudden you can do Taskforces, Strikeforces, Red XP Lvl teams & Blue XP Lvl Teams. Guess what you just made yourself able to do nearly everything. While there are specific story arcs that requires a pure red or pure blue team. They are few.

    2. This seriously surprises me more then anything. AE, just like the market are linked across all servers. So if someone on Torchbearer makes a mission you wanna play, don't fiddle around hoping they upload it to your server. It's already there. Just search for title or number.

    3. Know your acronyms is handy. TF/SF for example. TF tells you that's a Taskforce that takes place on blueside. SF means it's a Strikeforce that takes place on Redside. There are plenty of others, just try learn them if you can. Examples: MSR, Hami, etc...

    4. For love of good drink, Cimerora requires you to be level 35 AND have the Midnighter badge. You may ask how do I get this or you have it in your head you have to do specific arcs on red/blue to get it. NOPE, just go to the NIGHT WARD, go inside the mansion. Ta-da you now have it. You can do this at any level.

    5. READ READ READ & RE-READ. Just because you saw XP FARM SUPER FANTASTIC SPAZOUT INSTA 50 PARTY. Doesn't mean it's what you think it is. If that person doesn't provide more information ask. Don't send the guy offering a team a message CAN I JOIN, only to find out yer on other side of the fence, you have no clue how to get the other side(refer number 1.). This is personal headache for me, do to me multitasking far to many things at once, then wondering why you are not in a team, I'm already full, cuz I send out invites to tells. Only for me to look through to see why.

    6. When one a team that has mix of Vigilante/Rogue/Villians/Heroes. Be aware the moment you use Oro or SGbase Portal. 99% certain you'll be kicked from party via game mechanics. That sucks if you was on a TF/SF/Trial. Either A. Take the long way around, B. Prestige Store TP Powers, C. Pocket D. Those will not remove you from team.

    7. When on a TF/SF/Trial. You cannot access the Prestige Vendor on Blue or Red. But you can access it in Pocket D.

    8. When on a team, with mix of said above alignments. Be aware that most time as the team lead you cannot invite to said team till you are in specific side or zone they are in. So if there is a mixed team in RWZ, you normally won't be able to invite/be invited till either A. yer the zone or that party is all in the zone already(that's not 100%, so refer to A.)

    9. There is far more to this game then MSR & Farms(Just my personal comment)

    10. Follow your Team lead, if team lead likes to run point, be it they are blaster or a tank. Respect that till otherwise presented that's not feasible anymore. If team lead declared so n so is running point, respect that as well, stick to said person running point. I don't care if you Captain Super Duper. Teams like to play together, if you wanna solo, then set yourself to +X times X, face roll over as much as you want.

    11. To PvP Crowd(I love yah). But stop, lol. PvP nearly killed CoH, wanna say around between issue 16-18(memory fuzzy). Do to all nerfing of powers(Regen never was same & never recovered for melees), till they finally got smart set two sets. PvE - PvP. Stop complaining about everything in this game. It was never built for PvP, they tried, it basically failed. Work with what got.(Personal thing, I've just seen a lot of crying about it, I'm from Indom till I moved to Excelsior).

    12. I know many players are A. Fuzzy Memory players, B. Quit at X issue didn't know of anything changed past X issue, or C. Actual new players. Please use all resources you can. Homecoming Forums, Discord, or even Paragon Wiki(While old, still has some valid information on stuff). More you know the more you make a team leads job easier.

    13. Finally: Don't be scared to lead a team/TF/SF/Trial/etc... Trial by fire at times is best way to learn. 95% server looking to join a team. Only about 5% of it actually is forming a team for something. That's huge a gap, lets work on that, more folks willing to step up to plate, learn, speak up, impose some authority(without being pricks about it), & overall keeping the fun rolling along for all is very much needed & appreciated.

On updates. Just rerolled TW/WP for TW/Rad since....well, Rad Armor is more powerful and it fits better with my cyborg theme.

    Also, new color scheme:
    09843abd5d190481a87d066cb3a5f9bf.png
    a835142d1dedb4999b6f52eb5138b2d6.png

I've got the worst case of altitis ever, so a few tips.
    1. Besides Prestige Power, the P2W vendor has two more very useful things for new players. First, on the buffs section, there's the Defense/Offense/Survival Amplifiers. This Reddit post goes on details about them, but you can basically send money to an alt or buy Converters with Merits (you can get a few Merits just from doing Exploration badges in Atlas) to get covered, and it helps for those early levels where you have no Mez protection (specially important since it makes leveling Ranged characters far less frustrating screw you Seers) and not that great Endurance Recovery.
    2. It also has some Enhancements themed after the Praetoria factions (Loyalist/Resistance/Clockwork/Syndicate/Seers) that are basically mini set-IOs without bonuses and they come with a proc, though said proc stops working at level 21. They are all Damage/Recharge, which helps quite a bit to get the few attacks you have up far more often.
    3. HC in particular has a Beta realm where you can test around characters and the Beta forums have a section for an addon to help with the commands like insta level 50 and making IOs/Incarnate Comps/Inf Endurance, there's people that go full hog and test builds before rolling those characters on Live, but a good use of it is also things like looking how all your armors look on at the same time on a melee character. Don't want to roll a character that you hate how it looks with all the shiny on.
    4. On Rad Armor, there's a toggle, Fallout Shelter, that has the Atomic aura animation, which means that the spheres around you stay white colored no matter which colors you pick...on Bright Radiation style. You can swap to Dark Radiation and pick bright colors and is far less annoying.

Jenny Chaos and I haven't been around lately, and I miss all of you.

Also, I believe I am still in charge of the PA SG/VG on Everlasting (I keep logging in every once in a while just to make sure the burden of command doesn't fall to Kay again). If you need something from me or the SG/VG please ping me on the PA Discord (I'm Robo the Clown on the discord), or in this thread. I tend not to stay logged in on the PA Forums currently, so PMing me will be the least likely way of making contact.

City of Heroes rocks, and you all are amazing and awesome people. See you around sometime soon I hope!

Having the weekly bonus TF be an endgame one from the earlier days really drives home how much IOs and the incarnate tree have advanced hero power. I did some of those things maybe once and was on edge the entire time, now we set it for +4 and fragment into three kill teams with no worries.

  • GlalGlal AiredaleRegistered User regular
Yeah, I'm not really fond of what IOs do to the end game. Once you've kitted out your character they're kind of worthless for anything but incarnate-level missions (which tend to be long and aren't that many in number) because they're basically unkillable otherwise and your recharge makes your attack rotation 2-3 of your strongest powers, plus your incarnate stuff. It barely feels like you're even playing your powersets at that point.

  • AbacusAbacus Registered User regular
Note that the live game had Incarnate rewards come exclusively from Incarnate content precisely because Incarnate powers are a nerf to the previous level 50 content. Having Incarnate components coming from anything is a HC change, that made sense for a smaller population where there's not enough people for Incarnate trials, but now the horse fled the barn and they can't remove it without massive player backlash. Hell, I got my Alpha Slot while I was on a Trick or Treat farm for the Costume badges on my Corr.

Is the equivalent of a previous WoW raid tier giving gear as the current raid tier.

  • GlalGlal AiredaleRegistered User regular
    edited November 2019
It's not just the incarnate powers themselves, it's the sheer power boost you get from an IO'd out build (not even purples). When your recharge is low enough to where your top 3 powers are a full rotation, enough endurance regen to power them and a capped defense almost regardless of AT, and it all scales when mentored down so you're even more overpowered for low level content than you'd already be normally, etc.

Incarnate then acts as a multiplier, as it makes all of those benefits even more pronounced.

    Glal on
  • AbacusAbacus Registered User regular
IO's are another horse that fled the barn. Also, this is a casual MMO for a casual playerbase, so having overpowered characters is not a big deal. I don't expect Mythic or even Heroic WoW raid diffculty from this game and that's fine, rather just chill and punch bad guys on the face.

The main issue is judgment powers; since everyone has one and the cooldowns are only 90s, basically every mob winds up getting hit by 1-2 nukes. It makes the gameplay really boring.

At this point when I log in I just stick with <45 stuff

On Imperious Task Force in particular:
    • Is 35+, so it has to be able to be done for leveling characters on SO's. Aka is not supposed to be a real endgame TF, like even Miss Liberty Task Force or the Shadow Shard ones. Been having Shadow Shard TFs for 3 weeks before this one and Ruraluu really hurt even on Incarnate characters.
    • Is likely the most farmed TF of the game since is so short so most groups know how to skip everything.

So there's still a difference between blowing up Council on Peregrine Isle Radio Missions and trying to do the same on, let's say, Dark Astoria. And there's a bunch of guys pushing +4/+8 to see how far they can go.

So since the first page is just lamenting the game being canceled, and that might have happened before some people even joined the forums I figured I'd at least write up a little something about the basic game classes on the off-chance anybody is curious about this old thing.

A little something before we start: City of Heroes balances its difficulty around large numbers of enemies. Most enemies spawn as 3 minions per hero confronting them, and they trade up 2 minions to a lieutenant, 3 lieutenants to a boss. The exact composition differs based on enemy group - some are balanced, some are heavier on bosses and so on - but a usual fight will be against an entire group at once, and sometimes two or three.

Archetypeicon_blaster.pngBlasters specialize in dealing large amounts of area and single-target damage. They have little in the way of defenses and when soloed mostly hope to rip through an enemy before they get mowed down in return. Their secondaries are a mix of controls to keep enemies at range and powerful but expensive melee-range attacks to deal with them when they can't. Usually between the primary and secondary blasters have access to two powers that give them a short-term boost of damage, which allows for big spikes if used together or fairly consistent powerful openers between groups. Their specialty is Defiance, which gives them a rolling short-term damage boost with every attack they can fire off and lets them use their most basic attacks no matter what kind of crowd control they're under.

Archetypeicon_controller.pngControllers specialize in crowd control. Most have some kind of area immobilize and single-target lockdown that they can keep up forever, in addition to area lockdowns that refresh more slowly. Their controls usually work on minions and lieutenants but need to be stacked to work on bosses, though most also have a random critical chance that will make them work on bosses first go. Most can't do much damage on their own, but get access to a damaging pet at the highest levels. Their secondary is support powers, the same ones defenders get but at reduced strength, and their specialty is Containment, which does double damage to anything that's been slept, immobilized, stunned, or held. This mostly just brings their damage powers up to parity with the other archetypes.

Archetypeicon_defender.pngDefenders prioritize support. This is more than just restoring HP - even support sets that specialize in it will have a few other powers at the higher levels. But most of their support primaries may have a token healing power but specialize in some kind of buffing or debuffing - boosting ally defense and damage resistance, making enemies hit less or take more damage. Their secondaries are the blaster ranged sets - they deal less damage with them but the associated debuffs are more powerful. Their specialty is Vigilance - on smaller teams they get a damage boost, and all their powers cost less to execute the more damaged the team is, on average.

Archetypeicon_scrapper.pngScrappers do damage in melee. Their primaries are a variety of weapons and powers that tilt between single-target and area focuses but have something in both of them. Their secondaries are armor sets, improving defense or damage resist or both, often with some kind of self-healing capability. Their specialty is critical strikes - double damage 10% of the time, or 5% against minions. Blasters will usually mow down all the little guys and scrappers will focus on the higher echelons until they're gone.

Archetypeicon_tanker.pngTankers also do damage in melee, but less of it. Their focus swaps from scrappers - more armor, less damage. Instead of criticals they get Gauntlet, which puts a taunt effect on their area attacks and adds an area taunt to their single-target attacks. Taunts apply a ridiculous multiplier to the tanker's damage on the enemy hate list, so that a tanker just has to pinball around the spawn for a little bit and they'll all aim at the tanker for the duration.

V_archetypeicon_brute.pngBrutes are "villain tankers". The villain archetypes have better soloability but don't synergize as much in teams. Their power lists function like scrappers but they still do tanker damage. They only taunt the things they hit directly so they're not as controlling as tankers are, but they're a little less durable so maybe that's for the best? Their special is Fury, which -MADDER HULK GET STRONGER HULK- increases their damage as they land attacks and get swung at, but bleeds away over time.

V_archetypeicon_corruptor.pngCorruptorsare "villain defenders". Corruptors have a blast primary and support secondary, so their supports aren't quite as powerful, and their specialty is Scourge - an increasing chance of dealing double damage as a target drops further below half health.

V_archetypeicon_dominator.pngDominators are "villain controllers". They share a control set with hero controllers, minus the chance for a critical effect, but their secondary is a mix of melee and ranged damage powers instead of support. Their specialty is Domination - attacks will fill a bar that, when full, can be cashed in for a full energy refill, some control resistance, and an automatic bonus magnitude on all their control powers.

V_archetypeicon_mastermind.pngMasterminds don't have a hero analogue. They have a support secondary, but their primary is focused around summoning and improving a set of pets, which they have much better control over than any other class's summons. It also has a few ranged powers that don't do much. Their specialty is Supremacy - which mostly means their pets aren't as good outside of a command radius, but also in that command radius the mastermind splits any damage they take with any pets on defensive follow - this is called "bodyguard".

V_archetypeicon_stalker.pngStalkers also don't have a hero analogue. Maybe scrappers? Their powers are distributed the same and they focus on melee damage but they have even spikier damage spikes thanks to a combination of powers. Their armor replaces the first power with Hide, which gives them some area of effect dodge and drops when they make attacks or take damage, refreshing after some time out of combat. Any attack in Hide does double damage - except for a replacement power from their melee set that ties into Assassinate - it has a windup when used in Hide and deals tremendous damage if it connects, fearing and ruining the aim of anybody watching. Out of hide, Stalkers can use their other melee powers to build focus and with three stacks their assassinate power will do double damage.
