Finally got around to listening to the Mare Cognitum/Spectral Lore album
God damn that thing is monolithic
I will say that both gives it the albums strength and a bit of its weakness. It does the whole peaks and valleys thing exceptionally well but there isn’t a lot to excerpt from it meaning you have you clear your schedule to really experience its totality.
The new Natur is pretty good if you're hunting for some more solid traditional North American heavy metal, think Cauldron or Spell. This is much better than the first album.
Apparently Necrophobic streamed a live show yesterday on their Twitch channel, I missed it and alas it doesn't seem like I can access the stream after the fact
The first thing I did when I woke up this morning was buy a haul off bandcamp. Might pick up more stuff later:
I had to search this very forum for the name of the band that turned out to be Xoth. I just searched for "hesher bandcamp" and that album art was unforgettable. No idea why I didn't bookmark it at the time, because I liked it. It's actually a "name your price" deal now, but I bought the physical CD.
That's a dope soundtrack, for Axiom Verge. Well worth buying, I think I already own it on both Steam and in my physical copy though.
Good haul. Probably gonna grab some dungeon synth stuff myself later.
So...EVERY single song on this new Lucifer album is completely awesome, except the first one "Ghosts" which I believe was one of the singles, and it's only partially awesome. Subtle, catchy, occult and occasionally doomy 70s hard rock with angelic vocals that sound fresh out of your mom's vinyl collection. Nicke and his wife kick ass, which I guess is no surprise because this IS Nicke Andersson we're talking about here, fucking guy wrote and played on Left Hand Path, Clandestine, Wolverine Blues and Stinking Up the Night, not to mention The Hellacopters and Imperial State Electric.
What? Nicke Andersson is in Lucifer? How did I not know this?
New sort-of hobby: watching reaction videos of Floor Jansen absolutely crushing "Ghost Love Score" at Wacken 2013 (on the Showtime, Storytime DVD/BD) with Nightwish.
The bit she adds at the end has become known as the Floorgasm. For good reason. People's reactions when they hear that for the first time... invariably priceless.

I've gone down that rabbit hole a few times.
My contributions to such discussions is usually recommending performances of Monolith of Doubt or Dreamflight from After Forever's last tour in 2007 as follow ups.

I'd like to thank you all from the bottom of my motherboard for all the support you are showing for my new album. It's incredible that on friday the entire planet gathered on Bandcamp to support their artists and yet the album placed #2 in general charts! This is an unprecedented achievement for me and I'm left speechless. This really gives me hope and motivation to push ahead during these weird times we are all living.
I may be streaming one of these days so if you are interested in watching me composing something new or just want to have a chat about the new album just follow my youtube channel and activate the notifications so that you'll know when I go live.
That being said If you want to dig more into the new album details and story I did a long interview with Dead Rhetoric.
New Dool album if you're looking for some occult rock, I've listened to the whole thing and it's not quite as good as the amazing debut or some of the stuff from their alma mater The Devil's Blood, but still has some awesome moments.

yes, more "progressive" (ie actually fairly formulaic but using a formula that was surprising a few years ago, looking at u djent) bands need to actually lean in to mozzarella

Misþyrming had their show cancelled in Estonia last week, so they moved it to another venue and streamed it.
Hey, @autothrall. Have you ever thought about updating those yearly lists you did how many years ago? I just noticed that neither of those first two Borknagar records make appearances there.
Interlocutor) Ethel, what are you listening to these days?
Ethel) You mean, what music from years past I just got around to checking out? Thanks for asking!
Sargeist - Let the Devil In
Holy Hell, this is some inspiring, beautiful black metal. It reminds me of the more melodic segments of Deathspell Omega's Si Monvmentvm... in places.
Sufocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Not going to lie, I had only listened to Blood Oath before checking this out. That was good, but this is way better. Brutal, roiling death metal. Gotta love it.
L'Arc-en-Ciel - Dune *not metal alert*
I had zero exposure to this band before checking this out. The vocals take a little getting used to if you aren't familiar with j-rock (which I'm not), but once they clicked this turned into pure heaven.
Sure thing. Those lists are really out of date, even from the first revisions. There are a number of things that should probably be swapped around there to reflect albums I've discovered or those that have grown on me (or the opposite). I'll have to take a look at some point and update them.
Good call. Although that one was probably just an oversight, it's always been about that score to me, just shy of perfection. I'll knock one of the bottom three off for it.
But yeah looking at that 1988 list...HOLY LEMMY...what a stacked year. I count 12 albums that are still a 10/10...
It'll be fun to go through these again. I have a pretty good system now with my digital music library where I can comb through the entire year of stuff and probably not miss anything.
1980 is finished. Didn't replace much, just swapped out I'm a Rebel for Animal Magnetism. I think these days I like Lightning to the Nations more than Ace of Spades, and British Steel more than Blizzard of Ozz. The list is 75% British as it should be.

Hell yeah, Def Leppard on that list. I was a huge fan from about 87 until I started getting into heavier stuff like Metallica in the early 90's, and On Through The Night was always my favorite album of theirs, with High n Dry a close second.
I came across this recently, which I thought was super cool:
Hey! That was filmed in my hometown! If only I had been born 15+ years earlier...
That channel actually has a lot of great live videos from that venue around that time. I just saw an AC/DC set from '79.

And there's a new Lamb of God video. Not much of a change from their last album. And I'd be pretty annoyed if I was getting chased by a bunch of Cradle of Filth video extras.
Had to turn off the volume on the Lamb of God track because I personally can't stand 'em, but I'll give them credit that the cheesy vampiraluggalos made me laugh at least once.

He was not on the first album, if I remember correctly, which was mostly guests from British doom bands. He's just on II and III so far.

I'll start with 1980.

I'll put a note at the bottom for the ones that have been updated.
It did! Accept thanks you for their lifeline.
That also helps me swap out one of the spots I wanted on the 1981 list.
