The S consoles are native 1080p gaming machines. (Series S is technically native 1440p, but whatever) The X consoles are native 4k machines.

The "series" consoles are more powerful/faster than their "one" equivalents.

Regarding the One X and the Series S, the Series S is more powerful/faster, but again, doesn't do native 4k. It can only upscale.

I reckon I'd just buy a #5 if I were in the market.

I am replaying Deus Ex Mankind Divided (because that game is good and I miss Deus Ex) and I had completely forgotten about all the absolutely heinous micro transaction DLC that you absolutely donโ€™t need at all but they included for some reason, some of it being straight up consumable one-time-only items

Doing research, loose talk suggests this was a publisher mandated decision that came down at the very end of development without any warning and they had to scramble to bolt it in at all

Square killed Deus Ex and I am still mad about it

yeah the pay for praxis points never made much sense, the game gives you more than you need for free

How it works is where the whole thing feels insane to meโ€”stuff like โ€œeliteโ€ weapons (which I think were preorder bonuses but now are free downloads) are reusable across play throughs. Each new game, you get access to your elite weapons.

The praxis points and ammo and stuff though? Those get used once, in a single game, and thatโ€™s it. And if you collect it from storage, and then die without saving since you used it, when you load the game before you collected it, itโ€™s still gone

You can permanently lose something you paid real money for in a single player game

Honestly what the hell was Squareโ€™s problem, they invested really hard in Deus Ex as a brand for about a year and then immediately dropped it when it didnโ€™t do whatever crazy numbers they had predicted internally, I am SO bitter about it, not like Mass Effect bitter but pretty close to it

Yeah there was a FFXV(XIII?) shaped hole in Square's financials, and western franchises were supposed to fill that. That's why Tomb Raider 2013 "underperformed" and Deus Ex was killed. It's a real bummer for me as well.

Square Enix had the weirdest fascination with taking fairly niche genre franchises and trying to turn them into blockbusters by throwing money at them, then being shocked they didn't sell the +7 million they needed to turn a profit.

That happens more often that you'd expect.

EA killed Dead Space because they took a successful niche horror game and tried to turn it into a AAA action game thinking it would sell a lot more.

Get it cause it's like the thing from that Batman movie, but using the name of one of Microsoft's new consoles instead, cause it sounds similar.

Just want to make sure everyone gets it, is the thing. Cause if you get it you'll see that it's actually pretty funny, marrying up a movie from 2008 and a console from now.

deus ex and tomb raider both turned sizable profits

they didn't turn enough profits because AAA game proliferation has been untenable for almost a decade

Well, so, in the 2008 film The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger portrays The Joker and wait hang on

So The Joker is a villain and one of Batman's main adversaries gosh wait let's back up

So Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne and is a leading comic book superhero dang it we have to talk about that too

Ok so comic books are a particular type of commercial artwork which wait argh

So art is any of a huge number of ways of expressing human emotions and experiences, often but not necessarily in a visual way, and has been practiced by all human cultures throughout all periods of time. Some of the earliest art well predates modern humans!

Iron Knuckle made a pun, then they made a joke post over-explaining the pun, then when that confused everyone because their initial pun was easy to miss (or at least it was for me) they posted and even longer overexplanation of the necassary concepts to understand the joke.

Not going to lie, the Xbox Series S looks like serious hardware for a goddamn steal. 120fps @ 1080p for less than $400? They're obviously really anticipating Gamepass Ultimate subscriptions on that thing. But why wouldn't you? That's also a great deal, if you're looking at console/PC play. And Android phone streaming now, too.

Like, if you're already spending that much money every year on games, or close too it, the value proposition of that set up is basically ahead of everything else on the market. And I don't even think it's close.

Something that stood out to me, on top of that stupid shop, while playing through it recently was the "Wardrobe" feature, its just...why? it feels like a feature request from on high and if expanded would at least make sense to have it in the shop if you cared enough, but they don't, which makes the shop that little bit more stupid.

Is the xbox naming convention like some sort of obfuscatory psyop on the part of microsoft or some sort of high inertia fuck up

there was a post some time back that was about how historically these names have been done in a vacuum by marketing companies, instead of thinking about the history of the company as a whole, which makes sense to me as something a company would stupidly do.

This is what makes the most sense to me

I mean yeah Microsoft would prefer to just call their thing "Xbox" and you get a new one each year like an iPhone, but the thing is that even Apple calls them "iPhone 4" and "iPhone 6" and shit

So it makes way more sense to me that some marketing geniuses got paid millions to go "how about... the series X" and Microsoft was like "BRILLIANT" and no one looked backwards to realize how confusing that was until it was too late for this giant megacorp to stop on a dime and change it

"High inertia fuck up" is a great way to describe it

I think the WiiU is an outlier. The Wii sold big to people who don't normally get consoles, so on top of them not being as savvy as your average gamer, they also didn't really have a reason to upgrade anyway. Wii Sports still works on the Wii.

For the Xbox, at least for that first year when there's still One X's on the shelf, it's going to primarily be enthusiasts who, if they're interested in the Xbox at all, will likely do their research.

They will do SO little to communicate what the new Xbox is and differentiate the name, thereโ€™s gonna be a few people thinking itโ€™s another Xbox One variant

And Iโ€™m not sure they even have a big exclusive game or two to demonstrate that it isnโ€™t!

One thing that seems obvious to me is that Series should not be used as a generational signifier. In phones and cars and stuff, the series tells you the base model or line. Different models within the series will be low or high trim (cars) or low/high size/power (phones). But next year or next model year, you move on to the next series.

Like, both boxes should be in the "20 Series" (or whatever name you pick). The 20 Series S, and the 20 Series X will be the new models out this year. When they later release a half-step console, they can call is a 20 Series Z. Or if they're ready to make a generational break, that's the 26 series, with its own S/X.

Indie platform fighter Smash City leaves early access on the 17th
despite looking super janky and goofy, it's probably the most technical of the recent Smash-likes, lots of insane combos and movement tech, and a ton of content like single-player story modes for every character and minigames. It's a really cool game, with a neat roster made up of a bunch of weirdo characters from Ludosity's other games like Ittle Dew, Ijji, and Princess Remedy.
