There’s a lot of expensive stuff in here. Of the two storage rooms you know of, if the chest was in here you see no reason the thief wouldn’t have taken more than just the jewellery.
You’ve got a number of gowns on mannequins from a bygone era. Wait... you find a shiny bead on the floor. One of the gowns has had a bunch of the beads that circle its waist removed.
The rest of the room is shelves of closed boxes and marble, clay and wooden ornaments wrapped in thin paper. Those aren’t important though, you’re pretty sure you’ve found the important clue. Now to put it to use.
Without trying to light a candle or expend arcane power, you stare into the gloom. It continues to look the same. A room with boxes of expensive stuff in it.
Baber
You take your first step onto a creaking staircase. Your immediate surroundings are just a well aired space with a dusty looking floor. It’s actually not damp or mossy. You wonder what the workers smelled... then you know... it’s sort of... earthy.
After a thorough snoop you notice a section of the dusty floor is set a little lower than the rest. You give it a knock—it’s thinner than the floor, and has space behind it. It’s a trap door; must have been built for Gods knows what before this place was a city and instead a dreaded fortress. It looks heavy. There’s nothing to grab onto to open it, so must need magic.
You look around for inspiration. The pillars propping up the cellar have carvings of three fingered claws facing palm out, each one giving off smoke. Interior design really wasn’t the Vilelord’s strong suit.
Besides this you notice little paw prints and swishing tail marks in the dust. Big rats, if so.

Gear
Will you catch up to the guys or check another room? Perhaps the thief did more than break beads off a gown before taking the jewellery.
What have your clues caused you to speculate about the thief? If anything springs to mind.
Edit: Forgot the map. It’s already updated with Gear present.
With the ritual complete the trapdoor glows green (at least, to you). The delicate weaving of the old spell is revealed to you, you need to cast a touch range spell on the trapdoor to get it to open. You can plainly see it hasn’t been opened in decades... which raises more questions than it answers, actually.
Gear walls over to the trapdoor and uses shocking Grasp to open it up.
"We could look in here, but this is the first time this has opened since before the vilelord fell. Other than weird horrors I'm not sure what we'd find"
"Hmmm, while climbing down into a sketchy old hole is mighty tempting, we should try to find the thief up here first. Then we can go dungeon diving at our own pace. Shall we close it for now?"
With the trapdoor covered by a hefty cabinet that was gathering dust in the cellar, you all match back up the stairs to the first floor.
The doors to the unchecked rooms are closed, but unlocked. Light spills out beneath the doors, so you can assume there is a window in each one.
What do you do?
As you’ve been snooping around the auctioneer has starting calming down, and is getting their affairs in order. In another ten minutes the auction will have to carry on regardless.
You hear something scuttling behind some stacks of local crafts. A vase is knocked over, cracking hard against the floor.
This is a break room. There’s a short table with a few cups on it. Shelves line the walls, each holding less expensive looking items that are locally produced.
Inspecting where you heard the ruckus, you clear the crafts to find a small hatch that opens to reveal a pulley system once used to carry... something... up and down from this floor.
You recall seeing a similar contraption in a hotel once. The staff would put dirty laundry on a tray in the pulley system and lower it to the cellar for cleaning.
Whatever was just here is small sized, and leap down the tunnel to the cellar.
You notice a woven basket that has some tea bags in it and one muffin... whatever was here just stole some food.
The thief has no intention of leaving the premises. Why?
You fall down the shaft, and may take x bludgeoning damage, unless you activate your cloak.
It’s dark down here, as you’d expect. You can tell it’s an open space. You think you hear something running in the distance. You’ll need to make a Perception check to know where the sound came from.
Map key:
Grey = pretty dang dark.
Dark purple = Total darkness.

Hado & Baber
Gear sped off as soon as you got back up to the first floor. She kicks open a door, leaps into a room... and that’s as far as you know.
This must be the office of the auctioneer. It’s not too extravagant given the money that passes through here, but there are some fine paintings on the wall, and a glass windowed cabinet in the corner. There’s an old clock on the wall that looks Dwarven, but it’s stopped.
One of the workmen follows Baber in.
“Oh, there you are! Sorry I haven’t helped you guys search, I’ve just been getting some of today’s items close to the stage.”
What in particular are you gonna look over?

Hado is going to check out the paintings - he's always keen for an opportunity to learn something new for his own painting work.
There’s a number of fine paintings. On looks modern, with good use of scale and has a realistic look. It’s of the city itself; it’s quite marvellous work. You can really make everything out.
However what catches your eye is the auctioneer’s obvious love of the mythical dragon.
Nobody’s seen one, so these are just fantastical designs from the mind of the artist. You might consider asking them who painted these ones, and if they yet live.

Inside the cabinet are a number of delicate ornaments. You particularly like some novelty Calipdis soldiers, there’s a whole line of them, a drunk one, a sleeping one, one sat on a toilet with a book... oh, the investigation.
On the top shelf you notice two decorated eggs about the size of your fist are cracked open, and the shell has fallen in on itself. They’re so prettily painted, seems a weird choice for them to be broken like that...

Clue found! A fallen bead!
Gear heads to storage room B: Time for... Investigating!
Sadly, the bead is just too shiny and gear is currently distracted by it's shine.
