Everyone knows rich people just don't pay taxes, it's extremely difficult for me to imagine what the person whose vote would be swayed by this would look like. It's worth yelling about as part of the evidence that America is completely broken, but I can't see it as a bombshell.

There are no bombshells when it comes to Trump, or minds to be changed. It’s all about enthusiasm now: every story like this one motivates a few more people who don’t support him into voting, and motivates a few who do support him into sitting this out.
It might encourage some people to vote against him, but nobody who supports him gives a shit. The newspapers will race to midwestern diners and come up empty, I guarantee you

Joe Biden's store is on top of the recent news. Or this was stuff they had up there anyway.

    Price is 7.50

This is the NYT lead page tomorrow. Tweeter is a CNN correspondent.

This story could become the "But his emails" story. Recall one of Trump's few accomplishments is a massive tax giveaway to the Rich, and I wonder how much was to try and save his own ass now.

Yeah haberman and co have done their best to sell their souls for access journalism. But Trump is down 7 to 10 nationally and they can do a big story on his taxes where they can drag it out for multiple editions.

We'll probably know in the next few days. One sign that it might be, is if you start seeing republicans distance themselves from him. Up till now he had a ton of idiot rube conservatives fooled into believing he was a smart businessman, sadly also the case with a number of non-conservatives. IIRC there have been conservative voters that weren't exactly pleased with his handling of covid, attempts on killing ACA and the tax cuts for the rich didn't poll well either. This pretty much dispels any notions of him being a savvy businessman. Also with him and Mitch jumping the shark of filling RGB's seat with a shit theocrat, well this could cause his chances to implode and might imperil a number of republicans that through they had re-election in the bag.

Reminder that the Republican funding apparatus was merged into the Trump Campaign a couple years ago. They cannot turn on him or they will not be allowed to run for office. The entire GOP official party platform is “We support Donald Trump”. No policy, just Trump.

I mean Kavanaugh had mysterious debts paid off himself, how much more does he potentially owe? Or were those debts not actually removed, but instead owed to someone else now?

The New York Times does some great investigative journalism.

I think when it comes to elections and such they do fine investigation but the opinion section needs to be split off into another publication. With the way news aggregation works now, you can see an opinion news story from NYT or WaPo and the headline will be a very compelling argument against the printing press and internet in general.

    Polling call:

Pretty standard “Do you know about [candidate]? Do you plan to vote for them?” until about ten questions in:

“Which concerns you more: The Democrat’s’ move toward socialism, or President Trump’s words and actions?”

Polls need a “This question is bullshit “” option.

Their star political reporters are also absolute garbage. But there are also lots of high quality journalists who were there and are routinely embarrassed by the Peter Bakers of the world. And their editor in chief.

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

Can we please stop talking about this unlikely and dumb scenario where a presidential candidate punches the current president in face during a live debate on national TV.

    Hard disagree.

One of the few things sustaining me is the idea, the possibility, that my fourth wanted candidate punches the current president in the face during the first live debate on national television.

That's real weird. I feel like media folks have got to have archived his previous tweets if he's worried about media attention. If his concern is legal there is no way that those tweets are really gone from twitter's computers.

People have Kushners tweets if it comes to that. But half the time a story comes up like this, its either not actually Kushner's twitter or he routinely does it and people just noticed because a story happened.

The $750 thing is really significant. Because everyone knows the rich get all kinds of bullshit tax stuff. But effective tax rate, adding in FICA and shit is complex.

But $750, everyone can look at their paystub and go what the fuck!

There are a lot of things to latch onto about this story and drag out for the rest of the news cycles leading into Election Day

$750 - super easy to understand and what-the-hell low
"Trump is not a billionaire and may never have been a billionaire"
"Trump is deep in debt to numerous organizations, some foreign, and cannot be trusted to handle the nation's interests"

And we're not even in October yet. I expect there's at least one more major bombshell somebody is holding onto for next month.

No they don't. A lot of the idiot marks that vote Trump think rich people are crushed by taxes.

Also, I think there's a solid campaign add to be made out of that video of him coming down the ridiculous golden escalator with a voice over, of

"How much Tax did you pay in 2016?"
    "Was it more than $750?"
"How many golden elevators did you own?"
    "Is it none?"
"Do you think people who own their own golden elevators should pay more tax than you, or less?"
    "Just asking"

You can do the same with golf courses, penthouse suites, and $75000 stuffed lions.

However I’m sure if a campaign manager to Hilary had endured a similar incident hannity would be accusing Hillary of driving him to madness because he knows her secret kill list, etc etc

I DESPERATELY hope that they ask Barett during her confirmation hearings...

"Is it your position as a judge that people should pay the taxes they owe to the US government?"
"Are you aware of any IRS statutes or federal laws which prevent the release of tax documents which are being auditted?"
"Is it your opinion that golden elevators are expensive?"
"As a constitutional scholar, do you believe the founders were concerned about members of the US government owing vast amounts of debt to foreign governments?"

As much as I hate him, it’s likely more than that. Manhattan real estate is ridiculous. However because of the con artist way the Trump Organization has their assets, it’s kind of difficult to see who owns what.

really, it's part of the doublethink that pervades his base - the simultaneous ideas that rich people are both so powerful they pay no taxes and so vulnerable that they need a huge tax break or they'll flee to Galt's Gulch.
