The actual answer to where someone should start with Fate is “anywhere, except for Fate/Extra Last Encore”*

Plenty of die-hards will tell you not to start with Zero

I started with Zero, loved it, became a big fate fan

*Last Encore is so convoluted and messy that even long time fans struggle to figure out what the hell is going on

    Dungeon Meshi chapter 80:
Laios can say some smart things and still be incredibly dense, it's amazing.
    He's like a shonen protagonist.

He may be dumb and has a one track mind but his wisdom is on point.

I need to give El-Melloi Case Files another shot, that was the first non-Fate* Nasuverse animation in a long time. Also need to check out Cooking With Emiya because frankly the slice-of-life bits of the VN are perhaps my favorite Fate thing besides the UBW prologue

*I know it's a sequel to Fate Zero but it's also not a Magical Battle Game so I feel it's different enough to be distinct

Start with Fate Zero, then Unlimited Blade Works, then Today's Menu For the Emiya Family

    Reject anime.

    Reject VNs.

I should give it another watch through

I ended up being pretty underwhelmed by it despite loving Waver and mystery stories

A little too much nasuverse magical jargon for my taste

It'd be interesting to do a direct comparison between the Nasuverse and Nisioisin's Monogatari series, both are immensely dialogue- and lore-dense and thrive on urban contemporary fantasy set in Japanese suburbs, but I feel like they do very different things with those building blocks (and each have their own sets of problems)

I think I like going from UBW to Zero because of the way it introduces and then recontextualizes some characters and concepts

But honestly, it ain't that big a deal

The issue is that both spoil things about the other and Zero is very clearly the better of the two but also the prequel.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
