Some reviewers mentioned that desktop mode is limited to using only 4 of the 8 CPU cores? And demonstrated that RPCS3 ran measurably better when launched from the gaming mode. That seems like a huge restriction for god knows why.
There are only 4 cores, and 8 threads, so it could be something not reporting correctly in either portable or desktop mode.
Also, again, desktop mode was apparently totally broken during most of the review period, with an update allowing desktop mode to work at a resolution other than 720p and/or crashing constantly coming just a couple days before the review embargos lifted. If there's something actually wrong it's likely a bug that Valve needs to/will fix.

Battery life. It won't be long before someone tweaks the underlying Linux settings to remove the limiter for people who don't care about battery life.
e: Also as wunder said, the CPU is 4c/8t....in desktop mode it basically disables the SMT. You still get the four hardware cores, but it drops them in to a lower power state with no SMT.
Yeah, other than Jedi fallen order, what's a good baby's first souls like for babies that isn't an exercise in machismo, to reaffirm that souls games are not for me.
Elden Ring is wayyyyyy more accessible than previous Dark Souls games. I'd consider it a good entry point, myself.
There was a 2d souls-like a while back that was neat and maybe worth a look. I think it was called Salt & Sanctuary? I'd imagine that one is lower priced if you're just looking for a game you can ragequit in short order?
What was the name of that future-tech-y Souls-like that was moderately popular for a bit? I can't think of it. Phooey. (fake edit: Oh! The Surge)
Other options with similar mechanics that can make you hate gaming:
Remnant: From the Ashes.
Code Vein.
Nioh 2.
Looks like tge surge is on gamepass, so I'll give that a shot.
I tried playing DS1, but it was terrible. I know I said that the controls in souls games are bad and should feel bad about feeling so bad, but this was comical. For some reason A/B were switched with X/Y, so you dodge button was the estus flash. And even worse, LT and RT were bound to start and select. And in their place was... panning the camera left and right. Literally unplayable
What were you playing ds1 on? On my steam copy it works like all the other souls games.
I honestly recommend Surge 2 over surge 1 if you have limited time (which if on gamepass you do).
All of a sudden starting today, if Steam if downloading anything, then nothing else network-y works right or at all on my PC. Steam chat/friends dies and says NO CONNECTION. Chrome stops loading most pages or just takes forever. Etc. It appears that the Steam downloader is eating up every tiny bit of bandwidth it can.
And no matter what I put in this box:
... nothing changes. It still downloads at full speed and everything else dies.
This literally just started. There's nothing new/changed about my PC, router/modem, network, etc.
Even if I could get Steam to recognize a value there, I'd rather not have to throttle it at all, though. Having it "unlimited" has never been a problem until now.
Thank you @Karoz for the lovely gift of Haven, which just awesomely released an update allowing you to play your romantic couple as two guys or two gals if you so choose, which is pretty stellar.

Steam.
Yeah, I am playing surge 2 on gamepasss. I probably won't finish it, but it is going a lot better. I really like the ability to grind parts by targeting specific limbs on enemies, And the parrying system is a lot less obtuse too.
@Karoz classily pointed out that I was salty about something in chat by gifting me Salt and Sanctuary. Thanks!
After mentioning that I've been buying far to many bundles lately and pointing out that I'm only 5 games away from hitting 2,500 games on Steam Karoz decided to classily throw another onto the Pyre with.. a copy of Pyre.

I absolutely loved the combat in seige 2, and honestly the whole thing was pretty good. I need to finish it one day, I think I got stuck on some random boss just after the big “plot event” in the middle of the game.
I feel like it should get a lot more credit than it should, but being made by a non-Japanese developer that had already done two sort of mediocre souls games probably hurt it a lot.
With Steam opening the floodgates for adult games, there is a glut of smut on the venerable storefront. So if you are using signatures that ties to your account, such as Slim’s, then be aware that said adult account could be broadcast on your signature for the forum to see. Besides leading you wide open to public kinkshaming, the generator probably isn’t checking to see how appropriate the images it pulls from are for something like a signature. You are responsible for the content of your signature, and not being aware of the content your signature could produce is no excuse. Having the game itself on your signature won’t necessarily get you in trouble, it definitely will if the name and/or image violate the rules. This includes a possible infraction and having your signature temporarily removed.
Also, it’d be best to just not discuss those kind of games here, in case anyone is curious.
The equitable parrying light would actually be a decent item for Souls itself. Sacrifice 1 slot to see when you need to parry is a good trade.
I’m going to be honest, for some bizzare reason I didn’t realize Sekiro style parry and riposte was a thing in dark souls until about 10 hours in (for some reason it just never occured to me to try) I am still not really sure how useful it is as a general tactic.
It is reported/rumored this month will have a JRPG steam sale, if its true, yipee!!
However, you know we won't get steep discounts on the "Legend of Heroes" or "Atelier" franchises. -super sad-
This months humble choice, I really wanted Desperados III and Mass Effect LE, but the Mass Effect is origin and not steam, painful but I'll have to pass another choice. Shame.
Because I have them as leftovers from a bundle. Just message me.

Bloody hell, I cannot recognize your avatar, dementia is taking over
If people cannot discuss gameplay content without explicitly deacribing adult content, they deserve all the infractions
For example
Mirror and Huniepop were better match-3 experiences than puzzle quest 2, where battles and characters had nuance to them in the former, while the latter had filler after filler after filler and was a waste of money.
Was my experience 3 years back when I worked through the backlog. No mention of content just gameplay because there was actual games to play
Edit
Was gonna whine about flash games bettet than porn games but figured posting their steam ports be more productive

Been a busy few weekends out of town for me lately, with at least one more to go, so it was nice when I got back home and saw that @Iolo had sent a key for something. Thank you very much for Elden Ring! Though, I am embarrassed to say that I already have it on console and after doing some research it turns out I can't initiate a refund for you through Steam when it comes to keys. So if you're able to get a refund from wherever it is you purchased the key from, please feel free to do so. And once again thank you very much for the thought.

So um, whats up with the capra demon in Dark souls? I don’t mind spending 30 minutes learning a boss fight but this just seems a bit unfair.
I think it's meant to teach you that the cheesiest possible way to kill any boss is always best. Try to get it under the ledge and do plunge attacks. The dogs make this a huge pain.

It is straight up unfair. And it's going to probably kick your ass a lot. But like Frem says, cheese isn't just acceptable, it's rewarded. Like, did you know that if you obtain firebombs and toss them at an exact angle over the fog gate, you'll kill the boss without ever having to dodge an attack? Or that the demon gets hung up on the stairs while the dogs don't, so you can separate them out? It also depends on what kind of character you're playing, as mine was magic focused the first time so it was harder to get distance to cast. The dogs are meant to stun you so Capra can take you out, Capra is meant to hit hard while the dogs do quick attacks to mess you up.
The path I remember taking forward was to run at and then behind(sh) the demon, away and up the stairs from it and the dogs, and then trying to focus fire down the dogs, then drop off the ledge to get the fuck out of there as the demon made its way up, and then coax it to a position under the ledge so I could drop on it, or at potentially fire off a spell. Whatever you do, don't make straight for the stairs through the dogs, and don't try and let the dogs live for long.

Hopefully just a glitch in the newest Steam update that'll be fixed in short order? That does seem weird.
