To be fair to avatar I don't think the cg looks especially bad. It doesn't look a fraction as good as the new Unreal Engine 5 stuff, but it doesn't look worse than recent Marvel movies or anything.
It's really the visual design and art direction that makes it look like the box cover for a Radeon.

But I always forget that James Cameron movies are kind of like Dick Wolf shows or Chuck Lorre shows in that they for an unintuitive reason just really resonate with the masses. Which isn't bad!
