Correctly ground eyeglass lenses don't cost pennies and there are laws around their manufacture to prevent harm.
I've also deeply regretted any time I've spent less than $70 on them. You get horrible, headache inducing optics.
I dunno man.
For $3500, getting nickel-and-dimed to death feels pretty shitty, especially when this one accessory opens your product up to an additional *checks notes* 4 billion people.
But Apples gotta Apple and getting a complete product for one price just isn't shit they do.
I don't think they are under any obligation whatsoever to provide non-trivial accessories for free though.
Microsoft didn't give the xbox adaptive controller to folks who needed it; you had to buy that sucker, and it was the only way for many folks to engage in playing games and it was fucking rad.

You don't burn $40 billion dollars and counting with nothing to show for it, right?
Right Anakin?
I think, if this tech actually does take off, they are positioned to be the low to mid tier android to the apple iPhone.
I don't have any faith in meta's ability to make a flagship product though. The Quest Pro was a resounding disappointment. And as nice as PC VR is, the cost and complexity puts it in its own very niche category, so the Valves and Vives of the world are not really in this race at the moment.

I'm patiently awaiting Metaverse VR headset so I can watch it crash and burn.
Because Apple actually has their shit together when it comes to hardware, and this was the best they could manage for almost 4 thousand dollars.

I’m friends with 4 people that work at Reality Labs (and one who got laid off) so it’s not like I want them to fail
But man I still wonder what they’ve been doing with all that very public money at an executive level.

The meta quest headsets are an ok race to the bottom attempt to make a mass market VR headset.
Setting aside that the mass market doesn't even want VR, on top of that meta's much bigger failure is the absolute dearth of quality VR content in their ecosystem. Horizon Worlds is quite possibly the worst thing I could have imagined such a large company making. It was supposed to be their killer app and it's an embarrassment no matter how you look at it.

There is a Norse-themed RPG that just came out for quest 2 that is actually really impressive, with good controls, good graphics, good story... Scoring over 90% most places, maybe the best VR game since Half Life: Alyx.
And it's like 60 hours so I noped right the fuck out after 30 minutes or so. No fucking way I am playing a 60 hour game in the hardware as it exists today. Can you even imagine a 4-6 hour session? Christ.

I feel like the Vision Pro might be the first one that has been made that won't give you a massive headache reading a bunch of text through it, but it still won't be the kind of experience you want to do for a full work shift.
