I'm starting to think he and Knecht have some sort of "Space Jam Power Storing Basketball" arrangement where they draw from a shared power pool, because he had probably his worst game in the NBA so far.

wow, 40 point drubbing by the Heat. Lakers looking quite cooked.

    https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/12/03/science/voyager-1-radio-transmitter-power-supply

New events in the Voyager missions, which are increasingly looking like an ill advised bar wager than a scientific expedition.

In October radiation damage was identified in components on Voyager 1. In some cases heating up components can reverse this damage, so engineers turned on a long idle heater. This is something they have done periodically with both probes with no problems until now.

This time the extra draw caused the probe to overload its dying RTG, so it automatically entered a low power state by switching from its X-band antenna to the smaller S-band antenna. Problem: the S-band antenna can't reach Earth anymore.

Engineers came up with a way to shout blind commands into the void to force Voyager back to the X-band antenna and now contact has been restored.

So the probes continue on in year 47 of their 12 year mission, providing the only direct science data from outside the solar system we are likely to get for decades to come (New Horizons is leaving the solar system slower and will not reach the heliopause for many years yet). But they're in slightly worse condition than predicted - engineers expect there to be enough power left for one heater for a few years yet, but RTG performance has dropped to the point that it may no longer be possible now - it's very easy to predict the output of a plutonium pellet, but not so easy to predict the efficiency of the machine it's plugged into.

The final farewell seems a little closer every time the probes make the news.

I just got Absolution, the 4th book in the Southern Reach trilogy. I know that series was popular here, but I haven't seen anyone talk about this one yet.

I've only just started, so I can't say whether it's good or not, but dang I love how he writes. He's got such a strong style, I'm a dozen pages in and it just feels good.

I mentioned it's coming the day before it's release but didn't see anyone else had picked it up. I had the benefit of finishing the trilogy about two weeks before it came out so the earlier books were fresh on my mind. It was so nice to have more of something I thought was over.

It takes the weirdness from 10 to 11. Enjoy.

I'm kind of bummed that the Annihilation movie we got is so far divorced from its source. Southern Reach would have made a great series, real s1 of True Detective vibes.

I just got the first book from the library, I figured I’d do a reread of the series before jumping into the new one.

    I really love them.
I hear good things about his other novels as well? I think I'll try one of them after I finish Alien Clay by Tchaikovsky.

For the record I do enjoy the Annihilation movie, but it's just not the same.

My wife and I generally watch the Power Hours together, but I haven't even bothered to loop her in lately with all the food ones, unless they end up particularly funny. Given the expired issue with this one, I might not have even released it and just given it to Patreon folks as a bonus if I were them. They all reach the same point of Dan not eating and chaos - it can be funny in moderation, but I've hit my threshold this season I think.

On a positive note - I've really liked the Pico Park series, I wish they'd do more coop stuff.

Having fun still glitchy. I still have to use ws for up/down ladder when using arrow keys for movement and my invert mouse look has to be reset every time I launch the game but overall having a blast.

Vague on purpose so I don't have to spoiler it.

Person A: This group is after me.

    Ribo: I'll protect you.

Firefight ensues, Person A shoots me in the face mid firefight so I kill them and the group.

I guess I must have accidentally hit him in the firefight I'll reload.

This time Person A dies right off the bat and he's dead and the group is dead so it screws reputation with both groups. (I assume)

I don't reload this time. If he can't stay alive he deserves to die after a reload or two. I mean, don't tell me what a badass you are then die 2 seconds into the fight.

I finished Rendezvous with Rama and quite enjoyed it. Refreshing for me now to read some I guess harder sci fi. There seemed to be lots of thought going into the nature of this thing and its behavior. I’ll try more from this author in the future, it didn’t really jump out to me but the ideas for the story did.

And this e-reader has almost as good of a battery as a printed book. It’s been on for 7 days now and I finished the aforementioned book and it’s at 69% battery.

Nabbed "The Last Dangerous Visions" from the library this week. Just barely digging into the intro by Stracynski. I've been a fan of Harlan's for awhile now. Sadly not long enough to have gone to any of his conventions, and only really getting into his work by the last year or so of his life.
The world needs more people like Harlan. The kind of underdog for the outcast in the endless fight of bullies equipped with a razor sharp wit and voice to shout down the idiocy of the times. He's needed now, and missed by those who actually knew him.
The fading impression of the guy by the uninitiated may be of a ranting curmudgeon. But his spirit and deamenor could often be the brisque wake up call to the complacent and uncritical thinker.
