    Yeah basically.

Also, who the hell thinks kids should decide what they learn? Calculus, let them decide whether or not they need it.
Man fuck Calculus. Switch it out with Algebra or Geometry and I'm with you.
Calculus is used a lot in say, any science. I think it's pretty important, But for the sake of argument, sure, let's say Geometry.

I have yet to find a use for imaginary numbers or quadratic equations. And they only method of thinking they taught me was many and more creative ways to cheat at math.

I had to use imaginary numbers for some electrical engineering classes. I switched majors though so I don't know their "real world" application, other than that computers run on imagination, just like we always thought.

Damn, I never even thought of using my lucky quarter. That's brilliant. I ended up compromising and alt-tab-tab'd to the lesbian porn and cranked one out and have since spent my life going after women who have no interest in me.
Sadly this is not because they are gay.

Same here, except they're not lesbians.
    They're dead.

Oh why did that quarter fall into a gutter D:

It's fun to run through that Palin interview and play "Spot the talking point they've patiently hammered into her brain with large mallets".
Couric: Where do you stand on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

Palin: I’m absolutely for equal pay for equal work. The Ledbetter pay act - it was gonna turn into a boon for trial lawyers who, I believe, could have taken advantage of women who were many, many years ago who would allege some kind of discrimination.
Couric: Why shouldn’t the Ledbetter act be in place? You think it would result in lawsuits brought by women years and years ago. Is that your main problem with it?

Palin: It would have turned into a boon for trial lawyers.
    Ooh, found one!

Yeah, calculus is completely unnecessary unless you're going into physics, engineering, or med school (but for the life of me, I can't see why med school would require it). Algebra though, that math is the fucking math of the world. We're doing algebra all the day, from figuring out when the next bus arrives, to how many video games we can buy with out paycheck while still paying rent.

Liberals love math, they call themselves "rational." SO WHY ARE THERE IRRATIONAL NUMBERS?!

Just another example of the liberal elite, cramming these "facts" down our throats when all the data hasn't come in. Why should my child learn about "pi" or the concept of 0? Did you know who invented the number 0? Real Americans don't need the concept of 0, we only have positive numbers. Not numerical concepts invented by people who don't like us very much. You know who doesn't like us very much? Liberals.

Hells yeah. And I'm extremely thankful for having such a good teacher for that class. I've also found Geometry fairly useful. But after that it just got wholly unnecessary for my own life.

The point of early education is to address a broad spectrum of potential needs, as addressing individual children on the basis of their true and lasting interests is difficult if not impossible.

I thought I wanted to be a physicist, turns out I actually hate physics and love Psychology. I'm glad I was taught to write and read well in addition to being taught calculus.

Then again, maybe we should get NASA to help develop the curriculum for 4th graders, they seem pretty dead-set, right?

You also don't need to understand science, or history, or really, anything taught in school for "a number of jobs". School isn't just about job training. It's about understanding the world. Calculus (and other higher maths) lets you understand the world better. It changed my perspective on how everything interacts with everything else, for one thing.

This leads me to think that most people who don't like calculus didn't understand it very well.

I agree that high school isn't just "job training," but there's some shit that kids just don't need. And a lot of kids aren't going to particularly gain anything from trying to learn Calc either. That time would be better spent on, say, an additional economics class.

He's arrogant, not stupid. He's hedging his bets. If McCain pulls this one out through some miracle and/or cheating, he can go right back to what he was doing. If Obama wins and/or the Democrats take a stranglehold on Congress, he's laid the foundations for becoming more reasonable.

No, see, history was entirely relevant to what I wanted to learn. And science is very valuable in flat out avoiding dumb mistakes like putting butter on burns or how, exactly, disease spreads.

And I flat don't like math that's not applicable to my life. It's not about not understanding it. I understood it just fine when I wanted to learn it. It was people's complete inability to demonstrate why I, someone who wanted to become a linguist, was better off taking an advanced math class over Russian. Can you eplain to me what I benefited from learning and later forgetting how to do a quadratic equation? And do you think several years of Latin should be required for everyone regardless of what they intend to do later in life?

There's something true about what you say, but it's difficult for me to say that the default standard we have for people should be lowered simply because something doesn't seem useful for some people. You can already avoid taking Calculus if you really want to in most schools, I think. From my perspective, understanding calculus is useful enough for life that schools should at least attempt to offer it for all students.

Not latin, but some foreign language, yes. You were forced to take math over a language course? You couldn't take an additional language course as an elective? You were unable to take any language course because advanced math got in your way? What's the story here. Higher math helps one think critically and logically. You haven't retained many of the specifics about it, but it seems likely to me that it influenced you in ways that you don't realize.

Also, the lower grades are not about teaching you what you want to learn. They're about teaching you things that make you more knowledgeable about the world around you, so that you understand it better. Once you get to college, you can go to Brown and major in parmesan cheese crafting or underwater basket weaving, but until then you should have some structure in your learning. Furthermore, letting anyone take whichever classes they want is more likely to cut off options for a person, since many younger students make terrible decisions and will choose the easiest classes over the ones that challenge them. This limits their mental and educational development, and can keep them from finding out what they excel at and what they don't.

Nobody said Calculus shouldn't be offered.

    Jesus Christ.

Calm down, I misspoke. Offered wasn't the right word. I more meant that students should be strongly encouraged to take it.

Edit: Sorry for talking about this in this thread as well.

The extremism, to me, is those who would support partial-birth abortion. Those who would disallow parental consent when it comes to a minor child who would seek an abortion. I think parents should have a say in that. They should be a part of their child's health care there. And those who, like Barack Obama, would support measures that would actually allow in a botched abortion, late-term abortion, that child being born alive, to allow it to not receive medical help to save that child's life. That's extremism to me. That is so far on the left side of the political spectrum and public sentiment in this country. That's the extremism to me.

    I love that.

I just saw the video of the newspaper comment. Wow just... wow. Is she being serious? How the fuck does anyone see her as vice-presidential much less presidential material?

I mean I've studied Truman and his insecurity issues but this just takes the cake. How can you just not answer a question no matter if your a politician or not.

Could somebody explain this abortion thing to me?
I know a few people that might flip to Obama because of it, if I can cut through the BS.
