My favorite was running at the guys with speed and they seemed to be stunned by how fast you were moving then giving them the short jab (Alt-fire) then with the hook (Pri-fire) and they would go flying. One time I went past a guy over a cliff though...seriously it can be hard to judge how fast you are moving with that shit
But goddam, Mass Effect is one fine looking game. They ran out of time/resources. The random worlds are unfinished.
But the stuff that was polished is shit hot.
I almost wish the game was cut down to a 10-15 hour tightly scripted RPG like kotor, rather than letting you roam the galaxy.
ME2 should fix all those unpolished problems since the engine's already done.
The engine was done when they bought it.
They had to implement things into it. It's not strictly pure UE3.
But the first game a developer makes using a new engine can involve something of an acclimation period. ME was a very good game, but so was Baldur's Gate. That didn't mean the sequel, using the same engine, wasn't far, far better and didn't accomplish new things with the engine once they were comfortable with it.
I've been playing God of War II recently and I am shocked that they managed to get those kinds of graphics out of a PS2.
Yeah. After the way FFXII, GoW and SotC pulled amazing stuff out of the PS2, I'm eagerly anticipating the things we'll likely see coming out of the PS3 at the tail end of its life.

I hate to make any predictions concerning technology, because time will make idiots out of people who do. However, aren't we getting to a point where startling jumps in graphical technology will become rarer and rarer? That is, the improvements won't be as visibly noticeable, but will be in the detail instead?

In a way, yes. But if you think about PS3/360 titles now, and the clear compromises that're still being made (worlds with arbitrary boundaries, feet that don't *quite* touch the ground, imperfect collisions between characters/environment/etc, most games barely making 720p, much less 1080p, etc)...there's plenty of room to grow, and that's not taking into account bigger changes (like significantly more accurate simulations of physics and whatnot)

No it's more than just the little details. More powerful consoles also lead to improved physics, allows more complex AIs, lets you have more data and processes running at the same time, etc.
I am bored. And this forum needs more shinies. Apologies for jaggies, but it does look better in motion, which hides the lack of AA on my machine.
And some spoiler images from the same game

Maybe due to the newness of the current generation at the time, but the opening scene of King Kong, with the rain pouring down as you sat looking back at the man in boat, water cascasing down the side of the ship and the lightining flashes sticks out to me. I'm sure a screen wouldnt do it justice. Sometimes these things just look better in motion.

I just played through Crysis Warhead and the graphics at the end scene are fantastic... it really is a beautiful game all the way through, but whatever effect they're using at the end looks great.
It turns on the fancy motion blur on things like people, and forces the engine to render every single frame, which makes the game run more slowly but also more smoothly (consequently it also makes the game get easier in bits where it would normally be too choppy to play) - it really does look beautiful once you have all the effects turned on.
I thought I was the only one who ever played this game. Absolutely beautiful.

Thing I love the most about Deadspace is that it doesn't stress my videocard at all, and it still looks beautiful.
Disappointment of the year for me, but I just loved cruising around space looking at the beautiful spacescapes.
I lost this game, I'm dying to play it on my newer rig, this shot is taken with a 7600GT, hence the low res.
Still play this a lot, screenshots never make it justice though.
After a job well done, no one notices me.
Vroooom!
Another huge disappointment for me, but it looks great

Just found an old PS1 game in my collection that I hadn't played before, and recently booted it up and was wowed by the graphics, maybe some of you have played it...
SaGa Frontier 2
Like Valkyria Chronicles, completely pulls off the watercolor aspect, except it does it eight years prior to VC.

That's fucking gorgeous, holy hell. Lately I've been dreaming of a game based on 2d sprites and backgrounds but with disney-quality fluidity of animation and this makes me want it all the more.

I just felt that when a game hits highs as much as ME did, the lows kinda dont matter.

Slightly off topic, but that website you linked is extremely funny.

I want whatever monitor you have that a 3000 pixel wide image didn't break your H-Scroll. o_O

Well I have two in a dual monitor setup as a continuous screen.

I love that Psychonauts level, all the MiB's peeking from the windows and claiming everthing is fine.

this shot right here: is fucking terrible.
Those filters that people try to put on old games to smooth off the pixel edges are goddamn eyesore.
Alright, I'll admit that, but that was me to blame, I only chose that shot because of the size.
Oh, and also besides just posting every golden age Lucasarts game:
and
Visti, have you checked out the remake of that game? Gorgeous.
Many of the tracks in rFactor are ported over from other games. Probably a leftover from something else.
.. There's a remake? That sounds awesome!

I dunno, the only SaGa game I played was Unlimited SaGa and I enjoyed it a lot.
