This is jumping the gun a little bit, since right now we're on Sonic 1 here, but one thing I always had a problem with in Sonic 2 was getting all the emeralds, since tails did a pretty good job of screwing up the bonus levels for me.

Anyone else have that problem? Anyone solve it?
Options > Sonic alone > start.
Alternatively: Get more rings so Tails doesn't have to, noob.

How does tails screw it up? He's behind you. Any rings he gets are ones you've missed anyway. :P

The split second between when sonic jumps/lands and when tails jumps/lands often results in tails taking an obstacle to the face.
Damn I love the drowning music in this game, probably the first time I ever got scared playing a game was hearing that before drowning.
Yeah, the drowning music is great. I wish they'd bring it back in a modern sonic game. The last time we got to hear it was Sonic Adventure.
Ever heard the drowning music remix from Ocremix.org? :P
Also, there is something very sinister about giving you an invincibility box while underwater, probably due to the fact that it cuts out the warning music or something.
So I did in fact get the Mega Collection + the other night. Carnival Night Zone is a pain the ass. It appears that there are these platforms that I have to jump on to make them go down? I can't get the timing right to force it all the way down though. Now that I think on it, is there a block to push on to it to force it down?

You don't have to jump. When it's moving down, just press down. When it's moving up, press up. Just keep pressing these two directions as it moves, and it'll eventually reach the bottom.

The drowning music is actually in Sonic Rush Adventure, I was happy to discover. Seems like it took a really long time underwater, though.

As stupid and simple as that is, that exact section ruined Sonic 3 for me and a few of my friends.

Yeah, those drums can go to hell, and no one should be ashamed for getting stuck there.
Every single other level item you can interact with either does it's thing automatically, or at the very least it very obvious what you need to do with it.
Those drums, however, are different and annoying. Not only are there other drums in the levels that move on their own, throwing everything off, but these special ones do react to you jumping on them, so it's not a great leap in logic to assume you need to jump on them repeatedly to get them to move. Why on earth they felt the need to put one thing in the game that is completely counter to the smooth, intuitive level design like everything else is completely beyond me.
I've noticed a lot of the levels contain parts that except for rings look exactly alike
Is that laziness or something else?
Laziness, apparently. I saw something about Sonic CD (probably a TSR post) showing how everything is laid out in fairly large subsections, which are combined to form a full section. It allows larger levels to be more easily created and stored, though at the cost of a bit of uniqueness.
Are the Chaos Emeralds flashing because there isn't enough palettage to display them all at once?

It took me years to figure out how to get through Carnival Night because of those damn things :x

Except Tails only loses rings he picked up himself, so it doesn't end any different from the result of Sonic going it alone.
I'm not much for classifying or praising the music in most games, but Sonic music I love, I'm not really sure what seperates it from other music (although Mario's basic themes are memorable as well); I generally love the 'race' zone music, like Starlight Zone and the similar level in SonicCD (I haven't played it in a few years because my SegaCD is borked) where you race Mecha Sonic. I also love the opening of Winged Fortress and the music in Hidden Palace and Sky Sanctuary are both nice, as well.
My question, since you're going with linked Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, is whether you'd happen to be taking the time out to beat the original Sonic 3 final boss (which is longer and more annoying than the version you get in the linked version).
Pinball levels are alright, I guess; Casino Night is probably the best of Springyard, Carnival Night and Casino Night and Collision Chaos (Collision Chaos in Sonic CD I found extremely annoying, and worst of them all). Generally I consider Carnival Night a cheap rip-off of Casino Night...made worse by the lack of slots.
I enjoy the first levels and similar levels (Hilltop and Marble Garden are like more difficult versions of the opening zones to me, which make them decidedly more fun for some reason...plus Hilltop's music rocks).
Mystic Cave (despite the abundance of punching rock death), Lava Reef and Ice Cap are probably my favorite zones (Aquatic Ruin gets an honorable mention for the underwater parts, but you can just breeze through the level so easily without going down);
Flying Battery, Oil Ocean (although the music is soothing for a bit) and Scrap Brain are my least favorite (honorable mention for Chemical Plant because of Act 2 and the damn rising water/jumping puzzle thing where I always used to drown);
Labyrinth would be on there if I was still 12, but it grows on you with time...it's relatively fun, but I always hated that gauntlet at the end, until I got dexterity and better focus with age and it's not as annoying, now.

Looks like I'm not alone, either. Heh.
I actually bought one of those turbo controllers to get by it. Got a bubble shield with Sonic and had the rapid fire turned on.
You spend about 15 seconds in water through all the sonics unless you're terrible at learning from mistakes. Most of the water you end up in is a trap; it's very easy to avoid.

Man, I love Aquatic Ruin water; sometime I just jump in right away at Act 2, even though you can go through there in like a minute if you take the upper path. Chemical Plant 'water' can go to hell, especially the jumping puzzle in Act 2.

I think you are too; there really aren't all that many levels where you start falling.

It's definitely not hard, but I like how unique it is. It might have been cooler had you actually had to fight Robotnik after running that gauntlet.

And the trick is to simply jump earlier so Tails doesn't take anything to his face.

Up, down, left, right.
No-one will think less of you for skipping it.

LABYRINTH ZONE IS SHIT!
GOD DAMN YOU AND YOUR FUCKING WATER TIME LIMIT!
GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE AND NEVER COME BACK.
Okay, I'm done. Just venting.
It's just not fun to move half as fast and have the damnable time limit looming over your head.
And the drowning music is horrible. HORRIBLE. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack every time I hear the drat thing.:x

Easy. Don't fall down.
Don't you start the level off falling down?
