Emerald 7 seemed daunting at first, but I got it on attempt number 3. Emerald 4 was by far the worst for me. Going Super managed to cut 2 seconds off my Splash Hill Act 1 time; went from 54"25 to 52"2-something. No idea how people are managing under 38 seconds without going Super.

This game is really good. The only thing that really bothered me was lack of momentum in the air. Died a lot on those Casino cards because I felt like I should travel further in my jumps than I did.

It's actually amazing how precise he is in the air and that you really have to work on building momentum.
Ha! Just unlocked an avatar award of a whole body sonic costume. Not the head though. For that you need to
get all the rings during the ending after you've beaten the game. You know, the part where sonic is automatically moving forward and you can only control his jump. Eff that.
Eh, someone had to make that one. The way some of the other reviews were written, I definitely felt like they bought into the "all they need to do is make 2D sonic" idea - a lot of talk about what went wrong with newer games and how 4 is just like the good old days guys, not so much about the game on its own terms (which I guess isn't really possible anyway), and mentioning but mostly glossing over stuff that actually got changed. This one's backlash against those as much as it is against the game, I think. I agree with most of what he says about the graphics and momentum, really, but he's overstating it.

Sheesh, even the comments on that review are deflating.

Played the demo.
Feel like I could get into a more modern Sonic game if the camera was pulled back significantly, allowing me to see what's coming and not having to memorize the arbitrary level design.
really the worst part of the demo for me was how slowly you could move and still make it through a shuttle loop
or how you could just lightly press on the stick to stay glued to the side of a wall
honestly I don't even know if an actual change to the mechanics would have to happen to fix it
Sonic just needs to not look like he's casually strolling. if he were pumping his legs more both things would probably look fine. The animation just doesn't match up to what's happening though.

People think they want something from sonic games that doesn't exist. The aging sonic fan population had less to compare the earlier sonic games to and thus the memory's where more positive. People keep going back to sonic games expecting this burst of enjoyment only to find it doesn't live up to their expectations.
Sonic 4 is not a bad game In fact in all regards its a better remake of everything Sonic 1 offered. It's greatest flaw is that it will always be compared to the childhood memory's of the earlier games. And it will always fall short of these expectations because there is no formula to success when your comparing the failures of the new sonic games to the successes of the old games.
If you where just to compare sonic 4 to sonic 1 for example. It is in always a better game. It's just not better than Sonic 3 and S&K. Does it deserve 2.5 starts because its a solid game that doesn't reach these expectations? If Joystick was rating the first 4 zones of Sonic 2 I don't expect they would give it more than 2.5 stars ether.
Whew! Finally 200/200 on achievements! That last one where you have to get through the last level without getting hit was a bitch. I've spent about 12 hours on this game so far, definitely worth the 1200 points.
That final boss is annoying - ate through all 30 of my lives.
How do you hit him once he's red?
You mean glowing with lightning arcs?
Yup. That's the one - the only time I could damage it I somehow glitched and got stuck inside him, doing three hits of damage but killing me...
In his second "form" he'll launch his arm at you, which will fly into the sky and then slowly settle to the ground not long after. You have to attack this arm either while it's drifting down or on the ground, and it'll fly into the giant mech, causing damage.
I agree with the review for the most part. However, some people like that just fine. I'm not one of those people. Like I said earlier, NSMB did the whole throwback thing way better.

More importantly, it'll open him up to be hit. You can usually get him about 4 times before he recovers.

Doy, I forgot to mention this.
The arm hitting him opens him up attack, basically de-activating his shield. You'll need to attack him while his shield is down.

Sir, to you my hat is tipped. How did you manage it so quickly?
To be honest, I'd say there was some luck involved; I think I was a few pixels away from one of the goals at one point, thanks to about a dozen bumpers. Leaving the room with a load of bumpers spread out in the middle until last definitely helped, though, because the less time you're in that room, the better. Think I had about 21 seconds left on the clock when I grabbed the emerald.

It's official - I just suck at this game. 50 lives down to the final boss - I can consistently get him to his final form, but actually killing him is out of my reach for tonight.

I can't believe that I found the first special emerald stage the hardest for some reason. I still can't figure out what the hell pressing jump is supposed to do.

That was definitely the 2nd worst after number 7 for me. It took about 6-7 tries for that one.
I reiterate: This game is so good. They finally figured out that not being all about uncontrollable speed and good platforming mechanics = good game.
I like small touches like this.
