How about Manhunt? The whole thing was basically a creepy snuff film. And the showdown with that crazy fat guy at the end was pretty scary. I felt pretty numb to all the violence by the end though.
Manhunt gets a bad rep, and probably deservedly so when it comes to the unnecessary amount of violence that game has.
But it also get's a bad rep in every other way. Because it was demonized by the none-gaming press, every Daily mail reader and soccer mom (The U.S equivalent of a Daily Mail reader) was up in arms about it and it was fantastic ammo to use against the gaming community in general. As such a lot of gamers became quite anti-Manhunt (Something I can't entirely blame them for, to be honest). Saying things like "The game is JUST violence, nothing else" or that the game-play sucks and it is just for sickos who want to see blood and gore.
That was kind of annoying to hear at the time, because I played Manhunt a lot when it came out, and it was a damn good game, for many many reasons. The most important of which is that the "snuff" concept presented in the game is taken completely out of context when talked about by people who haven't played it. Yes, it is disturbing. Yes, it is disgusting. Yes, it's very very violent. But I had to do those things. It was me or them. Every time I waited for a guy to turn his back so I could open the back of his skull with a claw hammer, just ensure that I could continue living for another 10 minutes or so, was filled with a sort of tension that I haven't experienced in other stealth games. It's difficult to say I didn't enjoy the violence, but that's not why I was playing it.
I was playing a very gritty, disturbing horror game that held my attention brilliantly through the atmosphere and subject matters being presented.
Anyway what am I doing? This is about scary games. I guess what I am saying is, if you haven't played manhunt yet, and you like scary games, DO SO.
I just wanted to say the bossfight near the end of the game against that ..... PIGMAN was fucking terrifying and amazingly done. Still stands out as one of the scariest game moments for me, like ever. And there are plenty of other points in that game that scared the bejesus out of me.
Well said... man you're making me feel like reinstalling Manhunt.
I felt like they really boiled down the stealth play mechanics to its raw essentials, and this translates well to a horror type game. You don't want to be bogged down with complicated gameplay when you're essentially hiding to stay alive.
And when you're trying to gain all the unlockables, then the game turns into some sort of twisted time trials race, only with stabbing... lots of stabbing.

I couldn't beat Manhunt. It actually wierded me out in some way I can't explain. I think it was possibly the violence but then again I'm the same guy in Condemned that was laughing like a circus clown as he beat a crackhead to death with a locker door. There was just something about Manhunt that unnerved me in a way I wasn't comfortable with.
By the way, I have an image I want to share that's very much relevant to this thread, but it's a huge image that gets compressed by photobucket and tinyurl, making the text unreadable. Is there an image hosting site that allows huge images?
The Dark Brotherhood quest line would probably fit in here. Not as much scary as disturbing. Also, the Dunwich Building, Point Lookout, and the Deathclaw areas in Fallout 3 were some scary places.
DeadSpace was amazing and playing it in the dark at night just made it even more scary. I finished the game but I couldn't play more than 1 level at a time because my heart couldn't take it.
Exactly this. I could only play in short bursts too. I think it's the tension that got to me more than actual fear or dread.
I've been interested in checking out STALKER for the longest time, as it seems to have a very creepy and oppressive atmosphere about it. Seems like now is a good time as it's 5 bucks on Steam right now.
I glanced over that list ... what was D like? I've seen some vague gameplay videos of D2, some girl is fighting off a tentacle monster, but I always wondered why D was so infamous. Especially the 3DO version.
Jurassic Park: Trespasser was a scary game what with T-Rex dinosaurs 20 feet tall chasing you across an island. But before you never give another thought to Trespasser and let it fade into horror obscurity, at least skip ahead to 7:30 in this video.
I was pretty creeped out when I got to the abandoned town in Trespasser. The atmosphere was perfect, as I nervously cleared all the buildings, just waiting for a raptor to jump at me when I entered a room.
I later read that the game's AI was so buggy, that pathfinding wouldn't even work in the buildings, so I was never in any real danger when inside.

Sweet, thanks for posting this.
About time I play STALKER for myself after reading about it here for ages.
I still haven't finished Call of Cthulhu on the Xbox. Had it for ages, never got past the hotel, trying to escape was just far too intense. They captured Innsmouth brilliantly though.
I'm currently playing through Dead Space, and I'm trying to resist the urge to ruin it with a custom soundtrack. It's just so damn fun to screw with a game trying to be scary and turning it on it's head with some things that change the mood.
FEAR using only the shotgun, with unlimited slo mo and goldeneye 64 music: Hilarious.
RE5 with unlimited assault rifle ammo and the soundtrack from Commando: Glorious.
I can't believe I forgot about They Hunger. Like Half-Life, it wasn't so much the story or the enemies as it was the atmosphere, which Neil absolutely nailed.

Man, exact same thing happened to me! There was something about that game's atmosphere that just got to me. I just couldn't push onwards after you released Burnham from jail.
I finally finished the game a couple of months ago. I have to say I wish I didn't leave it for so long, the game hasn't aged well... at all.
Reading this and the TVtropes 'Nightmare Fuel' page, I am amazed how many people are scared shitless by the eel in Jolly Rodger Bay in Super Mario 64.
Man that FUCKING EEL.
Its funny I think that is my main reason for my fear of swimming in the sea. Ill float on that fucker all day but if I can't see below the surface fuck that shit.
I recently finished my first play through of Half Life and those fucking fish are TERRIFING. Gwah Fuck them. I used God Mode and crowbar'd those fuckers. Say what you will but I HATE KILLER FISH IN MY GAMES.
Which is why I will never play Call of Cthulu.
I was such a pussy back on the N64 I bough Quake then wouldn't play it. My Dad did go through and beat it though so I did get to watch. You guys also know the entrance to Gruntilda's lair in Banjo Kazooie? I was terrified of it and would either close my eyes and run through it or have my brother enter all the levels.

Plenty of games have made me feel uneasy while playing, like Resident Evil 0 or Eternal Darkness and make me jump a few times, but the part in Call of Cthulu when you escape the hotel is the only game to make me fear for my life. I had the shakes after that and could never finish it.
Why shouldn't you be terrified of water creatures? You're in their element and they are faster than you are. Leviathan, whales, that fish from Phantom Menace, the newt from RE4, those dragons on old cartography maps when they didn't know the Americas existed, Kraken, etc.

Have you ever played Half-Life 2?
Yes but it was a while ago and I don't remember any terrifying fish monsters.
That could soon change however.

When you're getting teleported around at the beginning, you end up underwater and one of those Ichtyosaurs or whatever comes barreling right towards you... and you teleport away at the last moment.
You never actually encounter them in-game except in that scripted sequence, but it made me really fucking scared to get in the water.

You'd think that chase would let up after a while, but no. You don't get a nice resting point for like, another hour of gameplay. It's just one really fucking long stealth/chase sequence that gives no quarter. The hotel escape is by far the best bit, though. A very well done translation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

edit: Nessie!
Don't forget the sewer Dianogas in Shadows of the Empire. You have no idea how long it took me to work up the nerve to get in the water, much less get through the level.
Alternatively, Dark Forces, but I don't remember having to navigate underwater passageways in that one.

Absolutely. I'm all for more Lovecraft games. I'd even take at myst style game of "The White Ship".
Maybe I needed to give it more time, but it just felt like the same thing over and over, after the first few kills. I might just not be as patient as I was back then.
So I'm just going down the list of games Professor Snugglesworth posted, googling the obscure PC games I haven't heard of.
This game "White Day" sounds pretty cool. In it, you play as a high school student sneaking into the school at night. Of course its haunted, and there are evil security guards roaming the halls.

I didn't find that scary. In fact, I was ripped out of my brain the first time I beat FEAR2, and was pretty much thinking "Eh...I'd hit it."

Maybe I'll reinstall it, and just play up to the part where it turns into a shooter.
