The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
My lovely family (mother, sister and brothers) have decided that I do not have enough distractions and have put together $1000 for my upcoming birthday, and I am only allowed to spend it on a PS3 and related merchandise. I hadn't even contemplated the system until last week when I got my first look at Heavy Rain. What I need from you all are some suggestions on how best to use it.
Let's go down the list, shall we?
I own an HDTV with several input types.
I own a 360, Wii and gaming PC. This means I'm mostly interested in exclusives.
It's my understanding that the slim has no PS2 backwards compatibility. I have a PS2 I was hoping to remove from my TV stand, but if I can't then so be it.
Genres that really don't interest me all that much: racing, sports, flight sims, and unless it's absolutely superb I have quite enough FPS's.
I have wireless internet.
I do not own any Blu-Ray discs.
I don't play local multiplayer very much, and if I do it's usually limited to me and one other person.
So... tell me what I need. Make me excited to become a PS3 owner!

The same PS3 game recommendations will get trotted out, so I won't bother. But get yourself some good blu rays - Planet Earth, for example, to make you really enjoy HD films. And a blu ray remote - that's really the only accessory you'll need, at all. Unless you want a bluetooth mic for online gaming.

First, get yourself some Blu-rays and show off that fancy HDTV. Recommendations for ones that look particularly excellent: Planet Earth, Speed Racer, Star Trek, Ratatouille
Get yourself the following exclusives:
- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (play this before the second)
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Infamous
- Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
- Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
- Demon's Souls (if you like punishing but rewarding games, not my cup of tea but it's certainly highly recommended enough)
- Heavenly Sword (get this and then turn off the motion control)
- God of War Collection
- I know you don't like racing games. Neither do I. I still recommend Burnout Paradise wholeheartedly.
Next, get yourself to the store and pre-order the following:
- Heavy Rain
- God of War III
- Final Fantasy XIII (not an exclusive but PS3 has the best version)
Finally, get online and download these:
- Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty
- Shatter
- Any old PS1 classics you might be into

Suggestions for movies that look incredible on Blu-Ray are welcome as well.
-Uncharted 1 and 2. No explanation needed. Play 1 first of course, because 2 improves on it in every way and you won't really be able to go back to it afterwards.
-Metal Gear Solid 4, but only if you're already a fan and have played 1-3 (if you haven't played 1-3, pick up the collection for PS2 and then see if you like 'em)
-Ratchet & Clank Future Tools of Destruction/A Crack in Time are fun shooty platformers, but may be too easy if you're the type who likes a challenge (they are kid's games after all). However they're sort of like Pixar movies in game form, so if you don't mind the lack of difficulty they're worth checking out
-flower is a PSN game, I'm not sure how much it's going for these days, but it's super relaxing. Worth getting if you're in to 'artsy' games.
-Valkyria Chronicles is a rad strategy game. I'm not sure what to call it. Some people call it a strategy jrpg but it's really not. It's gorgeous and fun to play but also rocking a bunch of anime tropes that might turn you off of it.
-Yakuza 3 will be coming out in March, and it will be amazing. Pick up 2 for the PS2 if you haven't already to get yourself prepared for the face-crushing awesome that will be 3.
Hmmm...
As far as blu rays go, Planet Earth and any Pixar movies are musts.
-Metal Gear Solid 4, but only if you're already a fan and have played 1-3 (if you haven't played 1-3, pick up the collection for PS2 and then see if you like 'em)
I played the first game and loved it, then I played the second and was less than impressed. I never played 3 and I've heard that 4 is good but very confusing. Is it even worth playing through 3 if I've already played 1 & 2?

As far as blu rays go, Planet Earth and any Pixar movies are musts.
Pixar movies look incredible. Also Transformers 1 and 2 have incredible HD transfers, even if the movie quality is dubious. Iron Man, Batman Begins and The Incredible Hulk look fantastic too. The Dark Knight apparently has some transitional quality changes when it goes from IMAX to regular HD video, but apparently still looks stunning.
I second the nominations of:
- Both Uncharted games. Play them on Hard and be amazed.
- Infamous
- All Ratchet and Clank games. Fun, humorous, and enjoyable.
- Demon's Souls (you are no stranger to tough games, Mr. "I Wanna Be The Guy", but Demon's Souls isn't actually all that difficult, in my opinion).
- Metal Gear Solid 4
In addition:
- Any and all Pixeljunk games (Racer, Monsters, Eden, and Shooter). They are all fun little games that are worth far more than their purchase price. You'll spend days enjoying them.
- Also, Flower is available on the PSN and is worth owning, if a bit on the easy side.
- Valkyria Chronicles. A great game that has a huge cult following around here.
- Little Big Planet. Same screen multiplayer = so much fun.
More if I think of them.

MGS4 was my first MGS game and even though I found the story to be pure, unadulterated bullshit, I still really enjoyed it for the gameplay. Since you can get it really cheap, I would advise you to do so even if you have no idea what's going on with the story.
Also, Uncharted 1 and 2 in numerical order since it will be close to impossible to do it in reverse.
- Also, Flower is available on the PSN and is worth owning, if a bit on the easy side.
Understatement of the century. It is the definition of easy. i don't even think there's a fail state. It's about the experience though, not the challenge.
3 is much better than 2, and you will be confused as hell at the ending to 4 if you haven't played 3.
4 is kind of batshit insane, but as long as you remember the main things and main players from 1-3, you should be alright in understanding it. I mean, it's basically Kojima going 'oh fuck, now I have to tie all this shit together' and pulling a bunch of explanations out of his ass.
Isn't that on 360 as well? I'm one of them achievement whores and any game I can get on 360 I probably will.
Good thing I didn't recommend Assassin's Creed II then. Which, if you don't have, what the hell is wrong with you?
Maybe you can grab an external HD to play avi files from?
Oh, this is something else I'd like to ask. I use TVersity and it works great for streaming home movies and such from my external HD/PC to my 360. Do any of you have experience with it on the PS3?
EDIT: Also, I don't have AC2 yet because I'm participating in the Backlog Challenge and can't purchase games for myself until I've finished everything else I own. Gifts are another story.

You should play 3 before 4, because stuff will come up in 4 that won't make any sense without having played 3. Three is also the overall best imo. I loved 1, 3, and 4, but I also liked 2 though not nearly as much.
Also Valkyria chronicles for sure unless you hate things for being "too anime." It is the pinnacle of strategy rpg's, as far as I am concerned.
Assasin's Creed 2
Valkyria Chronicles <- like five people in this thread have VC sigs/avatars for a reason.
Bayonetta
Demon's Souls
Uncharted 2
MGS4
Little Big Planet if you commonly have a second player.
Some of those are cross platform, obviously, but I wanted to name my favorite stuff I've played on the system.
I regret buying Dragon Age, I think it would be better on PC or not bought.
Final Fantasy: Tactics is on the PSNstore, as is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and lots of other stuff.
If you're looking for exclusives, I think Siren Blood Curse might be worth checking out (from what I've heard/read).
You can either download all ~17 episodes individually or import the Asian version (which is in English). And the PS3 has no region protection, in case you didn't know.
There's also been some noise regarding 3D Dot Game Heroes, with a March release date.
Are you getting Bioshock 2?
Backlog recommendation:
For some reason, I really like Roll Away for the PS1.
If it's done really well, it doesn't bother me so much. But if it's really anime, like monstrously massive eyes, I'M CHARGING MY POWER METERRRRRRRR, I'm a schoolgirl and super shy and I gasp all the time anime, ughhhh.
I did enjoy FFX, The World Ends With You, and the first Lunar game (I was younger then, though)...

VC is kinda like that, yeah. Best play the demo first.
You're a scholar and gentleman. Also, again: get Valkyria Chronicles. VC scratched a huuuge itch that I had been building up from FFT until I played VC... Disgaea was great but just missed the spot for me. Get the demo first, you'll see.
The anime level is not crazy big-eyes, it's just like you're playing a watercolor, it looks fantastic.
A good majority of the Exclusives have been really good. I know I've been beat already buuut..
The two Uncharted games are fantastic, moreso the second than the first. The first is kind of dividing on the boards, in that I've seen quite a few dislike it, but a good number of us loved it. But nobody really has an issue with 2 and it's goddamn epic. The word gets tossed around a lot, but it's fitting here.
If you want to be a superhero (or a superdick) with electric powers, get inFamous. It's $40 new and the traveling mechanics, once you get all the relevant abilities become a thing of wonder. Even if you don't want to be, at least give the demo a try. It's not a good representation of the game, but it does give you a small idea.
If you can find it, and think you might be into it, Valkyria Chronicles has a pretty rabid fanbase here. With good reason to me since, I mean, I enjoyed it, but it's not for everybody. It's a really good tactical RPG with great characters and great gameplay. The plot is pretty much what would drive you away if anything, but there's been much worse.
LittleBigPlanet has eaten literal weeks of my life. I'm glad I don't know how to find out how many hours have been sunk into it because it's a disgusting number. But it's a wonderful platformer with great multiplayer (local and online, though the online gets a bit laggy) and a fantastic level creator if you're into that sort of thing.
I haven't played Demon's Souls but I got it for Christmas (with a couple other games) and just haven't gotten to get to it. I have the weirdest feeling of dread and excitement.
God of War Collection. It's just as awesome as it used to be, it's $40, and it just might encourage more collections. Hint hint.
As for PSN exclusives: flower, Critter Crunch (if you don't have an iPhone), Fat Princess (Only if you can dig a big multiplayer game), Shatter, Gravity Crash (Which is on sale for half off until the 27th), Noby Noby Boy, the PixelJunk Games (especially Shooter), Trash Panic, and ZEN Pinball all get talked about a bit (or in the case of Noby Noby Boy is just neat enough to mention regardless) so they might be worth a look.
For upcoming things: Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, God of War 3, Yakuza 3 and 3D Dot Game Heroes all come out from now until around the middle/end of May, and they're all probably going to be awesome.
Dunno why I thought 3D Dot was hitting in April. Wishful thinking perhaps.

God of War is basically love it or hate it. I know plenty of people who love it since it's basically the definition of epic and you get to do a bunch of crazy over-the-top shit that just blows your mind. I also know a few who hate it because it's basically put on an altar and praised to the skies as the ultimate action game even though the combat is shallow as a kiddie pool
A cheap HDMI cable - I'm guessing you already know how much of a ripoff most HDMI cables are, so this is self explanatory.
Bluetooth headset - Most random ones should work fine, though the official one is meant to be good quality.
PS2-PS3 Memory Card Converter - At the moment you'll only want this if you want to transfer your PS1 saves to the PS3, since you can't play PS2 games on it. But if Sony eventually patches proper PS2 emulation in, it'll be handy.
As for games, here are the ones I'd highly recommend:
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
inFamous
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time
Demon's Souls
Valkyria Chronicles
LittleBigPlanet
God of War Collection - It's relatively cheap and both games look FAR better than the PS2 versions.
And coming real soon (as in February/March):
Yakuza 3 - Sequel to one of the best PS2 games around. There's a Yakuza 1+2 recap if you haven't played those two before. GET IT!
White Knight Chronicles - Check my WKC OP for details.
Final Fantasy XIII - On the 360 as well but really, if you own both systems there's no reason to get the 4-disc, compressed audio version.
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
Oh yeah and the PSN:
Flower
Super Stardust HD
Rachet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Shatter
Critter Crunch
PixelJunk Monsters
PixelJunk Eden
PixelJunk Shooter
Comet Crash
Everyday Shooter
Noby Noby Boy
Crash Commando
As for Blu-Rays, make sure you pick up The Dark Knight. This is the BD I pull out every time I want to convert friends and family and it has a huge success rate. The IMAX scenes look wonderful.
Loki: You should slap yourself across the face for even suggesting anyone check out Transformers 2.
I will second the nominations for Pixeljunk shooter - especially if you have kids (pending size) it's simple and good - and Fat Princess.
I also have never played a God of War game, but my 'maybe list' is long enough to let me leave it off for now, especially since the collection and 3 are coming out now, I can get both cheaper down the road for ps3.
Stuff coming up that I'm watching and approximate release dates:
FF XIII - mar 9
Heavy Rain - feb 26
White Knight Chronicles - feb2
3D pixel heroes (From) - ?

Does Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1 count as an exclusive?
Don't forget Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2.
Well then. Quality wins out over a number that means very little.
So is the general consensus that the only accessories I will need are HD hookups, bluetooth headset, BR remote and possibly an extra controller?
3 is much better than 2, and you will be confused as hell at the ending to 4 if you haven't played 3.
4 is kind of batshit insane, but as long as you remember the main things and main players from 1-3, you should be alright in understanding it. I mean, it's basically Kojima going 'oh fuck, now I have to tie all this shit together' and pulling a bunch of explanations out of his ass.

-Valkyria Chronicles (has a demo)

-Demon's Souls. (no demo - but an absolutely phenomenal experience, as almost anyone who's played it will tell you.)
