Is it sad that I can think of more than one senator (former and current) to whom this applies? I was actually confused as to who the topic of discussion was until I reread the post a couple of times.

Well, remember, Obama said in 2004 and '05 that he wouldn't run in '08.

Once was, a guy with a fairly socialist economic agenda and restrictive societal agenda like Huckabee would be eaten alive by the Northeastern-Libertarian center of the Republican party, quickly shunned from a party that espoused fiscal responsibility and cold calculation.

But now we live in a world where a college drop-out who doesn't believe in science and has less than two years of political leadership experience is considered a frontrunner for a presidential candidacy.

So in a Palin vs. Obama matchup, what do you guys think the electoral/popular vote makeup will be.

Obama will of course blow her out of the fucking water, but we can have fun figuring out the odds.

I don't know and don't really care, but I'll spend the hours and hours...and hours it'll take combing the "Where does the GOP go from here?" thread(s) we had after 2008 and collect everyone who said that Palin running in 2012 will NEVER EVER happen

    And I will laugh

Oh I will laugh long and hard

But then I'll be sad because what the fuck, America
Okay, yes I do care :P I fully expect it to be 1984 but for Dems. I also expect Obama to get > 60% of the popular vote, and Palin to get < 30%

Ideally a third party candidate would pick up a portion of the non-crazy republicans and some of the independants... then yay for more than two parties!

Newt being worse than Clinton: http://mediamatters.org/blog/200703090003

Gingrich had a remarkable number of missteps in four years as Speaker. He was first speaker to reprimanded for ethic violations in a landslide vote, and the whole philanderer thing above. The GOP backbenchers tried to get rid of him in year three, and the GOP losses in '98, which didn't even make the GOP a minority, made him take his ball and go home.

Gingrich is more a "generic Republican" choice for president. The last time he served in office was 1998.

    Its 26%

26% consistently turns up, even across different polls by different organizations, as being the crazies.

    For instance, that percentage:
    - believe that Acorn stole the election for Obama
    - believe it is never appropriate for the president to bow to someone
    - wanted no health care bill
    - believe Palin would be an effective president
    - was against joining Kyoto
    - approved of the job Bush was doing

Shortly thereafter, Gingrich then married Callista Bisek, with whom he was conducting an extra-marital affair during the Congressional investigation of Bill Clinton's perjury relating to his affair with 23-year-old intern, Monica Lewinsky.[60] He has been praised for his open and honest re-tellings on many occasions.

"Between now until November, when they say, 'Yes we can,' we say, 'Oh no you don't!' " Palin told a packed ballroom in a hotel alongside the Mississippi River. "Freedom is a God-given right, and it is worth fighting for. This is a party that will usher in a new era of prosperity. It starts with us. And it can start today. I say we stand together and take our country back."
That sounds like the kind of hokey thing that Republicans will proceed to eat up. We also must protect our right to die from curable or preventable illnesses!

God I just went to that page to see (thankfully no friends of mine are there) but good lord the comments physically hurt. So many people seem to think that she really put Obama in "his place" with the community organizer remark. Also birthers, so many birthers.

    Edit:
The worst (best?) comment I have seen on her page. "I don't think the Tea Party is racist. However, The TP isn't getting my trust yet. It must be earned not granted. Especially by black and latino people." this wasn't from Palin herself but it really shows the quality of her supporters he goes on to rant about the lefts tactics.

Newt's got other fun ones like saying that sex should only happen between married couples and that the purpose of sex and marriage is procreation and then outright saying that he is getting married to his mistress without the intent of having children. Among other things.

I don't know if he was still speaker during the hilarious, "We work for the people, The people say they don't want to impeach Clinton, but we're going to do it anyways because we don't work for the people." Congressional Republican press mugging, I think he got canned before then. That's the real lowpoint of the moral majority era.

"A lot of common-sense conservatives can relay some slogans that a majority of Americans like a lot better than [yes we can]," Palin said. "Like 'Repeal and Replace.' 'How's that hopey changey thing working out?' Or my faorite, 'don't retreat reload' -- and that is not a call for violence." That got her another standing ovation. So a bit later, she brought up the 10th Amendment and said, "Shoot, take a look at Texas -- oh, sorry, I said 'shoot.'" (Wonder why that didn't make her Jay Leno standup bit?)

She kept up her defense of the GOP as the party of "no," despite Newt Gingrich's attempt Thursday night to move past it. "We're getting back to our grand old roots," she said. "There is no shame in being the party of 'no,' if they're proposing, the other side is proposing an approach that violates our values, violates our common sense, violates our Constitution -- what's wrong with being the party of 'no'?" Just a couple minutes later, of course, she cited Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln to claim, "We're not just the party of 'no,' we're the party of ideas."

But no one in the room seemed to notice the apparent contradiction.
Abraham Lincoln is so relevant. I am glad she is taking a controversial "slavery is bad" position.

God bless the tenth amendment. It is the most worthless amendment and does nothing.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh, let's not toss the entire amendment out the window here.

The amendment is just a truism and isn't actually needed. It literally adds nothing to the Constitution. It doesn't help that it only includes powers not expressly or impliedly given so you can pretty much imply nearly anything that isn't completely insane thanks to the necessary and proper clause and a bunch of other clauses.
The amendment states but a truism that all is retained which has not been surrendered. There is nothing in the history of its adoption to suggest that it was more than declaratory of the relationship between the national and state governments as it had been established by the Constitution before the amendment or that its purpose was other than to allay fears that the new national government might seek to exercise powers not granted, and that the states might not be able to exercise fully their reserved powers.....

Just saw this on Fox News, "FOX POLL: Obama favored over Palin 55% to 31%"

Happiest moment I've had watching Fox News.

It's going to be interesting if she does run to watch the professional Republican establishment try to stop her.

The professional Republican establishment is pretty much powerless at this point. Between the teabaggers, Fox News, and the pundits, they've all but lost control of the party.

    Maybe.

I'm not sure we've seen a situation where there has been real open conflict.

But if Palin runs, I'm pretty sure they will try to stop her, if only to save the congressional/state level candidates that would die in the fire of Obama's ensuing Conservadammerung.

What they're going to do is try to focus all their support on the candidate that has the best chance of winning. But who the fuck will that be? Romney? The guy whose healthcare plan Obama plagiarized.

    It's facinating.

I would love to see a moderately serious Tea Party ticket on the ballot.

OH PLEASE GOD! PLEASE LET PALIN BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT!

I don't care if it would usher in the end of all life as we know it! The comedy gold that her run as president would create would be worth it!

And by comedy gold, you mean despair and dejection.

At the same time, Palin would be the perfect sacrificial goat to put up against Obama's near-inevitable reelection is '12. It destroys nobody of substance or importance, and has the added benefit of giving them an "out" from the teabaggers since they tried the teabagger candidate and she failed.

Ignorant Canuck question: Who are the contenders for the Republicans when it comes to the 2012 run? Palin can't be a serious contender....right?

    Palin's the front runner, probably.
    Romney
    Pawlenty
Sen. Thune is a name a lot of people throw out
Newt will be mentioned, but inevitably will decide to be the "ideas" man, with that term being used loosely
Huckabee is supposedly not running, but I don't trust him
DeMint if the tea partiers want to run someone
