Wait, at around 8:35 did Geralt just take the blade of his sword in his hands just so he could beat that guy to death with the handle?
I can't decide if that's incredibly stupid or pretty badass.
Anyways, now we have a potion to heal Triss, eh? I'm sure she'll be appreciative. :winky:
I know this answer is a little late, but the strike seems to be what's called a Mordhau, and it appears in German swordsmanship. Basically it is inverting the sword and applying it like a miniature poleax, with the hilt or the pommel. Apparently it's rarely used, and to me it seems fairly silly, but I'm more into the Italian school anyway.:P
The wikipedia page has this informative illustration:
Grabbing the blade is not as insane as it seems, as it can be done without gloves. As long as the grip is firm, and the blade is not so sharp that it would cut only with pressure, you should be fine. Loose grip would allow the blade to move, and hence cut the hand. I've seen this blade grabbing demonstrated with a sharp sword, and its unintuitive as hell, but works. I still wouldn't try it.
Nothing says I don't respect your swordsmanship like flipping my sword around and whipping you with handle. In fact...is this the medieval equivalent of pistol whipping?
EDIT: YouTube repeatedly rejected the second part. I re-edited and re-uploaded. It should work now (although it will take a while to finish processing and look good).
Hmm. Does Shani have (something that looks like) a snake wrapped around her left arm? Is that just decoration or does it have something to do with her being a healer?
I think it's a reference to the snake symbol for healing and medicine. Maybe it's a golden snake she can use as a whip? I don't know...
The dice rolling seems pretty fun actually. How is Fistfighting handled in the game? Is it like a tournament of sorts? Aaaaaanyways, nice job again. Still looking forward to the next update
In regards to the next level, I'd vote to see you put some points into strength. Any will do, your choice.
As to Shandi, I haven't gotten much further than this scene recorded in the game. What harm comes from confiding in her exactly? Or was it more a decision of time issues?
I believe Dramaties has the right of it. I'm still kind of confused about Shani's healing. I figured since she invoked the name of the mother goddess Melitele (and will be working in her temple later) and her healing came with sparkles she must be a cleric. But the wiki refers to her as a medic and talks about her education from the Academy of Oxenfurt.
As for confiding in her, people don't like their business told without approval, so it was more a courtesy to viewers. There will be a very important decision of trust involving Shani later, so I should call a vote as to how we currently feel about her to get that seed planted.
We did some fist fighting at the end of installment 009a. Once we fight and beat Fat Fred, we'll get a special prize and a quest to beat up the next level of fighter at the next inn we come to.
Oh man, you update faster than I can go through these and/or vote.
I always thought that Shani was a doctor in the more traditional sense, with maybe some small overlap, but overall a classic medic.
Regardless, I think you should veer towards trusting Shani, as I never got around to playing the game from that angle, so it'd be interesting to see.
As for the points, I'd say that purchase LVL 2 on all Steel sword styles for now. It'll be useful throughout the game, and make some fights quicker.
And I don't know whether it's just me, but the dice poker in Witcher was one of the very few minigames I've ever actually enjoyed. Maybe it's the combination of the music, simple yet interesting rules and benefits for the character. I don't really know how common this opinion is though.
There's probably no right pace to do it. If I do twenty minutes a day, it's hard to keep up, and if I stick to my standard schedule of ten minutes only on weekdays, I may not be able to finish before the sequel comes out next year. I will continue to play it by ear. And don't worry about timely skill choices. There are only a handful of challenging fights in the game. If I'm behind in spending points, it'll still be okay.
Fun fact! 'Bloedzuiger' is Dutch for leech. It literally means 'bloodsucker'. However, for some reason I suspect bloedzuigers in the Witcher world aren't quite the same as bloedzuigers here on Earth.
Anyway, I say we trust Shani. If it works out for the better, so much the better. If it ends up blowing up in our faces, so much the better. As a spectator, I don't think I can lose here.
As for point distribution... Let's go for Aard Level 2, Stun and Gust.

Oh, I wasn't really complaining. :P I just suck at following the thread with the appropriate speed.
If you really don't want to take the points in Steel Sword, then I was going to suggest improving Aard, with the same choices as WotanAnubis. Magic it up then!
Geralt vaults when you do an evasion (double tap a direction) into an enemy. It can be very handy if you're being mobbed and need to get some breathing room.
Flowers are easy to find. So go for it. Got to complete that set of cards somehow.
I vote for option 2. Its my favorite anyway.
I've never found use for the ring and would just sell the booze/food so got for the 100 orens. Does the ring have any real purpose?
Also, I ended up reinstalling this game after seeing you play. I noticed you didn't grab the axe or dagger and wondered if you find any real use for them?
The only side weapon I've found useful is the torch when I didn't want to waste a night vision potion. Other than that, I've just sold them for a little extra cash. I'll experiment with them for the walkthrough. Maybe they'll surprise me.

I've found no use for them either. I was just wondering.
By the by, are you gonna try and cover the side quests as well? There are a LOT of them.
As for monster names, I've been [slowly] working through this game for the past month or two and lots of the names seem to be German or Dutch. I can figure out what they mean but I have no idea if they are traditional names for folk-monsters or if they're just quirky appellations.
I also say you should trust Shani...because in my game I do and she seems down to party. In fact (Act 2 spoiler):
I let myself into her house at night pretty much straight out of leaving the sewers at the start, went upstairs, and had a nice chat. She didn't touch my penis but I saw her in a pretty revealing neglige...so yeah. Anyways, she asked me to see her in the church later on, but she doesn't seem to be hanging around in there any more, and now her grandmother kicks me out of her house any time I go in there.
Can't really tell if I just got in the first time through a bug or what. I remember Shani asked me how I got past her grandma and I was just like "I'm pretty sure I just walked right past her after she told me that you were upstairs". Hopefully she'll show up where she's supposed to at some point.
But I've got an hour and a half of raw footage to edit, so it may be a while before I can show you.
I am not planning to be exhaustive about the side quests. I would like to kill all the special monsters for the Royal Huntsman just to see them all, but other than that I'll just do the quests that come along. If anyone knows a side quest they believe to be especially awesome, let me know and I'll try to remember to do it.
In regards to the barmaid. I ended up getting time warped right before the meeting, she will be there the next night and be uppity and then do the deed no the less. Just remember the wine. :winky:
In matters of all bone or don't bone I vote bone across the board. Except:
the witch as I do not enjoy her card and then feel dirtier saving her life. Also, I stress the nurses card. Because... yes.
You'll have six bronze points yes? I would suggest alcohol resistence, points in fist fighting or silver fight skills you'll need for brief periods, and at least a point in the your new fire sign for the +to chance to cause them to light on fire. Makes me laugh everytime.
I've gotten the end of the second chapter at this point so I'm quite interested to see how you'll play certain choices. You've completed this before I take it? I laughed at your Alvin comments as the fact he sleeps on the reverends floor quite amusing.
Choices coming up I can offer a vote:
Give the Squirrels the items. Just for a laugh as to what it affects later.
Oh, and the old woman wanders the village during the day everyday, as does the flower woman. Problem with the old lady is she just looks like all the other old ladies anyway.
So, I JUST started watching this Let's Play. Enjoying the game so far. I'm using the MediaFire download option. Much better then what I'd get on YouTube.
I have a quick question... If you choose to stay and fight the Frightener, does Leo survive?

I'd say trust Shani, if only to get her card. :winky:
With the fist fighting, do you have to work your way up to ol' fat or can you just challenge him right away?

I think you can challenge Fat Fred right away. He gives us a choice of loot, though, so I need to work him in at the end of an installment.
