Small update: Thought I show you guys how far a long my Black outfit is coming. All I really need is to do the boots and the pants (those in the picture aren't the ones I'll be doing.) You also get to see my messy desktop, hurrah!

    Hi, I'm Dana, and I'm a game-aholic.

Recently, I've been growing bored of anime-themed conventions since I'm "outgrowing" anime, and transitioning more and more into a girl gamer. Whether or not I'm any good is a whole 'nother story. Regardless, I'm enjoying games more than I do anime nowadays.

However, there is one part of conventions that I love-- cosplay.

My boyfriend constantly raves about PAX, and how much fun it is. The more he talks about it and the Child's Play charity, the more I feel resolute that PAX is the kind of convention that I'd wholeheartedly enjoy. I'd only been introduced to the Penny Arcade webcomic a few months ago, when I attended a signing for their 11 1/2 anniversary compilation, and immediately fell in love with the comic and the cause. My first time at PAX will be next fall, for PAX 2011. (Sorry guys, empty wallets means no double-dipping with cons!)

I've been told that cosplay isn't seen nearly as often at PAX as it is at my past conventions, but it's one part of my yearly convention/vacation that I just can't pass up on.

So, I have one question for all returning and even new attendees, and even moderators:

Would cosplay be accepted at PAX?

I love reproducing game characters in cosplay, just because it's a fun experience. Not to mention that having a great costume that you spend lots of time on makes for a great photo op, too!

So, what do you guys think? Would a girl gamer's cosplay needs make people not want to get anywhere within 20 feet of her, or would it be appreciated and accepted?
Cosplay is more and more popular each year and the pax goers as a whole are very excepting. Just expect to have many people stop you for photos. To see how the cosplay has grown, see my links below.

The female of COG Gears of War would probably be expensive looking at the images, but the silent hill nurse is very easy and cheap. You can ebay a nurse costume and rip and dirty plus blood it up. The mask is just dirtied ace bandages, very easy. You can always take an adventure to make the COG.
I've already made 4 kilts, a splicer costume (for me), and on the way to make a moogle costume (for me). Each kilt was only 20 hrs., moogle will be about 40 hrs., and the splicer was 5 plus I still need to blood it and finish mask. Probably got another 4 hrs on the mask and blood. If you think out the design first, you can usually find a cheap and quick method to finish.
If you need any ideas email me.

I finally got the rest of the upper part of the Commander Shepard N7 armor done. Now just have to put it all together. At least there are pics of the paint job and it gives a general idea of how it will look when it goes on. I still can't figure out how to put the fracking pics on here. So here's the website to go look. www.masseffectme.com

Is it okay if I totally follow you around and take pictures when you're in your outfit? I then don't show them to anyone and hoard them to myself while I mumble quietly to my pictures "Shepard..."

LOL! Fracking brilliant. I wish there were more picture hoarding mumblers out there. It would make the world a more interesting place. Now all I have to do is find a Liara to wander around with...

Really depends, low quality stuff can run if it gets to hot or sweaty. Seattle is a fairly cool place in September but then add thousands of people in an enclosed space in seventy degree weather. I was wearing Platinum for my first PAX although she doesn't wear any pants she does wear a scarf, hat and heavy coat. I was baking by the time I got out of there.

You might want to look up Dr. Manhatten or Na'vi cosplays and see what they did and check out other cosplayers who use heavy face paint (there is a Yorda on cosplay.com who described what kind of paint she used and it looked great.)

Just be careful, you don't want to get paint on other people's clothes or items and you probably want to wait till the last day because who knows if it will stain you blue (well at least you can do a Smurf cosplay if that comes to it) :p

All in all PAX isn't a super duper gotta be accurate to 100% place for cosplays. I'm only dyeing my Matadosuki sweater a dark pink because it was bugging me to no end.

If you do decide to use paint, be sure to find one that does not peel. My friend used a blue airbrushed paint for a "winter lady" type costume, and about 2 hours in we were cleaning up the blue specks from all over the theater.

Last year I was a troll from WoW and used Mehron or Kryolan Aquacolor paint. It comes in a little container much like eye shadow or other makeup would and you dampen a sponge and sort of just smear it on the color then dab it on. You can get a fixer/sealer so it wont come off.

I was sweating/in the wet of seattle last year and the only parts that rubbed off were where my clothing met the body paint, not just from being in the elements.

Wow that had to be messy! I'm so disappointed that I couldn't go. I was working on my armor the whole day. I just used Liquitex, acrylic paint and a paper towel to dab and then wipe off. Do this a few times and the aging look shows up. Don't use too much. You can always add more.

the toil and slaving over my proton pack is continuing. bloody thing is costing a small fortune even on budget parts. pack is roughly half done and half wired, discounting the aging and weathering it'll need.

It all depends on safety. If they're made of foam and unlikely to hurt anyone, they're most likely allowed. If they're made of sharpened metal, they're definitely not. Every prop would lie somewhere in between.

If you want advice on specific items, private messaging the security guy is probably your best bet.

    OH PAX!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

You are brilliant! I'm a 6'4 scottish guy :P I'll be wanting a pic please!

    LOL sure!

I want to see you two holding hands though.

Still not quite done, but it's finally getting there and starting to actually shape up to looking like ghostbuster material. Just to build the Neutrino Wand and add wayyy more cabling and hoses.

    35797_10150229334660714_538875713_1.jpg

Metal tubes and gears makes me pretty nervous about such a thing.

A picture or two would probably help. Feel free to shoot me an email about it at dcoffman@penny-arcade.com if you'd rather not post it in the forums.

Is a Neutrino Wand classified as weaponry? Promise I removed the power cells, I'm sure they'll keep with their shelf life of around 5000 years. (also it can't shoot crap all).
    It should somewhat resemble this

So unfortunately my Bayonetta costume plans fell through. I still plan to bring my C. Viper costume with me; I'd love to have the chance to meet up with any other Street Fighter cosplayers for some photos (I got some great shots with Akuma last year!).
