I was not at all interested in the 3DS until I saw that it's actually getting a slew of games besides Mario and ported Japanese games. Looks like Nintendo is finally giving some serious effort to drawing in developers which don't rhyme with "Binfendo" and it looks great. A list of games like that could actually convince me to get a 3DS despite it not being compatible with GBA games (though I never realistically expected that anyway).

What do we know as far as system storage memory and downloadable games? If Nintendo makes the 3DS capable of storing and playing older games without having to carry around cartridges, I may actually need to buy this thing.

Yeah no, it looks about as powerful as the PSP based on Icarus.

That said the Street Fighter 4 engine always screenshots like shit but looks good in motion.

Since Melee was announced, and the trophy for Pit was shown I have asked for only one thing every year from Nintendo at E3.

    Announce a new Kid Icarus.

I just about cried when I realized what was happening, and I don't even know why. It seems the stupidest thing in the world, but goddamnit.

I would kill someone, in front of their own mama, for access to a 3DS and that game.

So 3DS looks pretty cool. However, I've been lured into one too many Nintendo platforms that weren't for me by hardware gimmicks, so it gets a "wait and see" from me. Also, the single analog stick reminds me too much of the problems the PSP had, and the stylus based touchscreen just seems ridiculously outdated at this point.

As for the games, I'm supremely underwhelmed. I realize that a lot of Nintendo fans are loving it. But if you're not a fan of what Nintendo already does, they didn't really give you much of a reason to sign on. They didn't show a single new IP, 1st party or 3rd.

    Out of shock, probably.

I mean, really, who can honestly say they expected Saints Row to come to a Nintendo platform?

Who honestly expected half of those games to ever show up.

It's not as if Nintendo's third party support has been stellar.
I didn't catch all of them, but as far as I could tell almost all the others have at least some precedent for releases on Nintendo consoles.

But Saints Row? Not so much.

One thing's clear, those developers who said the 3DS had the power of a PS3/360 were talking out of their asses. That, or you need that kind of power to display PS2-like stuff in 3D.

Which, if that's the case, really kind of makes it a shame it's in 3D at all, I'd rather have Uncharted 2 portable-like visuals, thanks.

    I ... can't comprehend this.

Yeah, this. I'm more or less done with Zelda and Mario Sports and all of that crap, but man alive it looks like Nintendo's finally gotten plenty of third party support.

I think the 3DS looks far less gimmicky than the Wii itself. Mostly, it's just an updated, overhauled DS with new capabilities. The 3D part really holds no appeal to me, but the game lineup plus a more robust handheld certainly do.

Displaying stuff in 3D requires more processing power. Or "oomph," if that's more your speed.

At the very least, keep in mind that the nature of stereoscopic rendering is such that the only thing preventing every image from being processed and rendered twice is how good your algorithm is and how specifically it's tailored to the application in question. What it may be lacking in graphics (I personally think that it's packing more than enough punch, 3D on the DS looks almost objectively bad while this seems as if it will be tolerable and age well enough), it's certainly making up for in processing power. I believe it when Hojima raves about that -- and with that kind of powerful, versatile processing ... and marketing + a system that has the ability to play without 3D right there on the packaging ... developers might seem a little bit less hemmed in by the gimmick than they did with the DS or Wii at launch, explaining some of the third-party enthusiasm.

This is a mildly dumb thing to say, particularly about their handheld 3rd party support which has always been everyone and their uncle.

Sure they've had problems with their home consoles but they've never ran into 3rd party issues with handhelds with the small exception of very early DS.

To be fair, I'm sure they tried before, but now that they've shown the world that they could pretty much walk into peoples' houses, take all their stuff, and still have their hands shaken on the way out, everyone can't wait to climb on that wagon.
