Swain was silent as the group left the depository, taking care not to disturb the eerie quiet that enveloped the streets. It was truly sad what had become of Gate Pass, he thought. The streets used to be packed with celebrating citizens after the Festival, and to see them so silent greatly unnerved him. The sounds of distant battle that echoed in the background were oddly calming to him however, and he reassured himself that the city was putting up a fight. He was still a commander though, and he kept his look of confidence as he walked.

...until the crash, that is. It's quite a spectacular thing, a falling wyvern. The noises accompanying the beast's decent proved no less dramatic, with frantic screeches and dying wails piercing the aforementioned silence (which didn't seem so bad in comparison). The whole event climaxed with the strangely enjoyable sound of a building collapsing, the silence returning moments later.

Dorn was off before Swain even HEARD the scream.

"Dorn, wait! There's a wounded wyvern in there!" He extended his arm as if to grab him, but it was no use. Dorn was the kind of person who would stare down a dragon if it meant a child could go free. Hopefully his eagerness wouldn't get them all killed...now or later. He ran after Dorn, staying behind him but in front of everyone else. He wasn't about to fall behind again.

After the questionable affairs in the depository, Summer was inwardly pleased to see the group respond immediately to the cries from the damaged house. Not sure how wise the blind charge is, however, Summer trails the group and keeps an eye out for outside interference.

"I agree with Areneth on this one, Rivereye. Find someplace safe. We'll return to you once we see what happened." Torrent responds, agreeing with the Drow, knowing that a gnome as old as Rivereye to be a liability should it come to battle. The gnome coughs, but soon nods his head, finding a good hiding spot.

With battle axe gripped in both hands, the human Cleric moves into a flanking position next to Traorin.

Torrent eyes towards the door, confused that no one was going to open it. "Well? What are you waiting for? An invitation?" she whispers, hoping that whatever was behind the door, friendly or not, didn't hear them.

She opened the door slowly, revealing...

The room was a total wreck. Large clusters of wooden debris littered the floor and are obviously debris from the large hole in the ceiling. The dead body of a wyvern filled the hole, its carcass lodged in the structure’s rafters. The tip of the lance lodged in the neck of the Ragesian wyvern indicated that it was dead long before it even crashed into the building. You could spot what appears to be a male arm extending outwards from beneath the rubble, though it was lifeless. Lying close to the arm, was a young female human, with two gashes on her left shoulder, and one through her temple, the fluids of her brain still flowing onto the ground. The wounds seem to indicate she was recently slain.

    Swain:
You can easily identify the wounds as that made by a Ragesian battle axe.

In the middle of the room, stood a large muscular male human, wearing matte black banded mail, and a crimson red cloak draped on his back. Large cuts and bruises garnish the man’s face and arms, though you could spot recently opened (and empty) potions of healing strewn about on the floor close to the man. The man held what appeared to be a young babe, crying out loudly, in one hand, and a fearsome, keen obsidian battle axe in the other.

"Shut up, you little..." the man gurgled, proof that the potions have not yet taken into effect. He hears the door creaking open behind him. The man spun, thrusting the child in front of him and clumsily places his axe blade across the youth’s throat. With a choking, slightly gurgling voice, he demands, "Back off! I got a babe here! Yea don't want to do anything ye'll regret! Back off and let me take my leave, and it lives! If not... one more for the pyres, I always say!"

    Titania, Summer:
Passive Insight: The man seems to be driven by desperation. He's not hesitant to end a child's life if need be. Deeper insight may be required...

Moving inside the doorway and against the wall, Areneth eyes the situation, choosing his words carefully but maintaining a stern tone as he supports the dragonborn.

"You should be careful with your actions, Wyvern Rider. If you harm the child, you most certainly die. You're wounded already, and badly outnumbered. Your only option is to release the baby... which you should do now."

The man grips the axe tighter, and closer to the babe's exposed throat.

"Foolish? As far as I'm concerned, I could care less of this ... thing! This little brat is my ticket out of this gods forsaken Hellhole! If I had my way, the army should have razed this city to the ground! Can't stand fence-sitters in any argument or conflict! This place is deplorable!Now... back off, you uncouth and cowardly rabble! The soldier looks at you cautiously, all the while loosening (though retaining) his grip on his axe's handle.

    The baby continues crying.

"Shut it, ye little git!" the soldier shouts at the babe.

He looks back at Titania, then back at the Drow. "No one further injured? Well, I guess it's too late for her then. Not that it's my problem." he nods towards the dead woman.

Hearing the man's pleas and Summer's growing agitation, Areneth takes a step forward and lowers the hood of his jacket, exposing his face to the room for the first time. He holds his hands out, palms down, and speaks in a soothing voice, first to Summer, and then to the Ragaesian.

"Peace, Cleric of Nusemnee. Certainly the deaths here are tragic, but in the context of the greater conflict, tragedies occur."

"So Ragaesian, all you want is to get out of here? Then perhaps we can make a deal. My name is Erdan Menash, and I am a politician of some note here in Gate Pass. My words carry great weight with the citizens of Gate Pass, particularly with the guards and militia. I can provide you with an escort to the city gates, where you can rejoin your compatriots unmolested.

All I ask in return is that you hand over the baby to my Dragonborn associate. Do this, and we have an accord."

The soldier eyes the Drow warily at first, though when Araneth tricked the soldier thinking he was a politician, he started to feel more calm, though a form of smug arrogance forming on his face, thinking he's got the cards in this hand.

"A politician, eh? Oh how the mighty have fallen! Guess your city ain't that invincible like you guys say you are! HeHeHe! Now then, what's your angle here? I mean, why would a quillpusher be running about here with this motley crew? And why would you help me? Haven't you seen my mates bombing your city? Nodding in concert with Titania's words, Areneth continues the ruse, playing up her angle:

"I think the specifics of my coming to this place are immaterial to our current situation, and I think you would agree on that. What is important is that I concur with the Eladrin. In the true spirit of politics, I feel it's best to make as many friends as possible for when the city falls and the new regime commences. I also want to see the survival of as many as possible."

"So, the offer still stands. Hand over the baby as an offering of trust, and I will use all of my influence to assist you in your goal."

"So, a bunch of yellowbellies coming to save their own hides then, eh? Guess the military was right about you Gate Pass folk. All bark and no bite. All big and tough, but when your invaded, you roll onto your back, exposing your yellow streak on the back, running away with your tail between your leg. Hehehe..."

The burly soldier eyes the Drow carefully once more, as though trying to find any remaining shred of doubt or warning.

Satisfied, he hands the baby to the Drow.

"Very well then. Let's be off. I got a schedule to keep, and don't want the lads back at camp to worry. Some of them still owe me money, you know. Name's Flaganus Mortus, by the way."

    Swain:
You recognize that name. People whisper his name, usually referring to him as 'The Ragesian Devil', known for his tactical and relentless Wyvern flying skills, as well as his near sadistic pleasure at harming his foes. He's considered a well respected (and feared) Ragesian soldier in his station.

Torrent walks in and asks the Drow for the baby. Remaining silent, Araneth nods, and hands the young child to the Cleric.

Torrent in turn nods silently, glaring at the brutish Ragesian, before walking out of the room, out towards the open streets.

"So, what are we waiting for?! Time waits for no man, you know..."

Areneth smiles graciously as the man hands over the child, saying "I am glad we could come to this arrangement."

Turning, he hands the baby over to Torrent, then follows the cleric out the door. Reaching the threshold, he turns again and looks to the Ragaesian. The gracious smile has turned into Areneth's trademark smirk. His eyes sparkle with a kind of internal glee as he quips,

"Oh, one thing you should know about Drow….we lie." His face taking on a more thoughtful look, he continues, "Well, that's also not entirely true. I do intend to return you to your comrades…the dead ones, that is."

Witty repartee concluded, Areneth turns his thoughts to the upcoming battle, focusing his thoughts on the murdered man and woman. Fury welled up inside him as he thought of the baby who now, like him, had lost a family. This man would pay for not only his actions, but the actions of all who would do such things.

Dorn's control is badly fraying by the time the man finally hands over the baby. His fists had been clenching and unclenching continuously for some time, and if the child had come to harm he doesn't know what he'd have done. His relief at the child's rescue sours, however, as he confronts the realities of either letting the murderer walk free or joining in the group's deception and betrayal.

After a brief moment of silent prayer with his eyes closed, the monk decides that in this case, universal balance must overrule personal integrity. After all, the soldier remains a threat to the innocent people of Gate's Pass, who have already suffered so much. If more of them were to come to harm because Dorn had allowed this man to escape, it would be an even greater mark of shame upon him. With that decision made, he nimbly slips around behind the villain and prepares to make his end swift, at least.

Launching himself at the soldier he lifted his magical battleaxe, the spirit of the storm within him conversing freely with the weapon in the form of jumping lightning between himself and the blade, as well as his trusty shield into a combat stance. Fallen Devil! Round 1

The soldier scowls at the Drow, and seethes with anger when he realizes the deception.

"Bad mistake, ya tosser! Should 'ave sticked with the deal before dupin' me! Now I'm going to kill the whole lot of ya! They don't call me the Ragesian Devil for nothing!"

Even surrounded on all sides, he grips his battleaxe in both hands, and a sadistic grin forms on his face nonetheless. His grin forms even wider when he heard the strange wolf-woman walking towards him to the side, muttering something about some skank or another's death.

"Don't matter who lives or dies in a fight. Long as I stay on top. As for you lot...ain't no one but me that's walking out of here alive!"

    Fallen Devil! Round 1.5

The Ragesian soldier lets out a battle cry, and swings his axe in an arc around him violently. The weapon's blade missed the Dragonborn and the Half-Orc, but impacts the Shifter and the Human Warlord, causing them to hurl a few feet back, with Swain towards the door, and Summer straight into the rubble that buried the dead wyvern.

But the Ragesian Devil was not done. He spun to the nearby Dragonborn. "What's that about pulling me apart slowly? Know yer betta's, draconian!" Flaganus swings the blunt end of his axe towards Traorin's ribs. The impact caused Traorin to momentarily lose his position, causing him to kneel onto the ground, hacking and weezing for air, as the air was knocked completely out of his lungs.

The Ragesian merely smiles, and swings his way toward the nearby Eladrin.

"So, fancy yerself a witch, eh? Gonna chop ya up good, I am!"

The broad sweep of Flaganus' axe comes as no surprise to Dorn. The big ones always want to throw their weight around, he thinks, this man is a brute and a bully, just like my clan. The flames of his fury at the mistreatment of the innocent citizens of Gate Pass are only fanned by the comparison to his brutal past. The anger grants him the speed to dodge out of the way of the scything blow, after which he follows Flaganus, intending to allow no further harm to come to his companions.

As the axeman focusses on Titania, the monk uses his distraction to slip behind him, keeping the enemy between them so that he must constantly turn back and forth to defend himself. After a few testing strikes, the half-orc spots an opening, zeroing in on the weakest points of the Ragesian's armour while his axe is too far away to parry. Dorn immediately lets loose a blistering series of kicks, punches, knees and elbows, spinning back and forth from one of Flaganus' flanks to the other, never allowing him to mount a proper defence while his sides, legs, neck, underarms and every other unprotected spot is battered mercilessly.
    Movement: Move to F4.

Standard: Open the Gate of Battle on Flaganus
    Attack Roll: 1d20+5=24 HIT
    Damage Roll: 2d10+5=13
    Furious Assault: 1d8=7
Stone Fist Flurry of Blows: 6 damage

Action Point: Five Storms (Flaganus only available target)
    Attack Roll: 1d20+5=17 HIT
    Damage Roll: 1d8+5=13

Result: 39 damage to Flaganus, now at 160/236

After standing in silence for the bulk of the party's interactions with the baby-wielding madman, Swain could be silent no longer. He struck out with his sword, yelling "You are a disgrace to the very soil you stand upon, vile dog!" His rage threw off his aim, however, and the horrible man easily parried the blow. It was no matter; he could do that strike in his sleep, and it was bound to hit eventually. Feeling a horrible silence fill the void left by his failure, he tried to fill the moment with a few words of wisdom...but none came. He would do better next time, he thought, and perhaps his anger had inspired someone better than words ever could.

...he doubted it, but there was at least a chance.
    Standard Action: Calculated Assault

    STR vs. AC = MISS! [/url=http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3037658/]1d20+3 → [2,3] = (5)

    Free Action: Talking...finally.

Angered beyond words by the Ragesian's continued belligerence, Summer snarls as her face seems to elongate and become even more feral looking. With a low growl, Summer lunges at the Ragesian and explodes into action as first her sword and then the abused Ragesian's armor glow brightly.
    Minor: Longtooth Shifting
    Standard:
Lesser Aspect of Wrath vs. Will (1d20+8+2-2+3=21) - Hit! LAoW Damage (1d8+4+2=11)
AP: Standard - Sun Burst vs AC (1d20+8+2-2+3+1=30) - Hit! Sun Burst Damage (1d8+4+2=10)
Move: Minor - Sun's Glow - The Ragesian's armor glows brightly (removes Low Light from 4 square radius)

Notes: Summer has Regeneration 2 while Bloodied
    Summer gains 10 temp HP
All allies gain 5 temp HP
All allies can make a saving throw (I don't think the stun can be saved though?)
Summer has +2 to damage for the Encounter
Summer has +1 to hit for the Encounter
Enemies ending their turn adjacent to Summer take 2 Radiant damage
Ragesian is glowing (Do we even have any party members affected by Low Light?)
    Ragesian takes 21 damage

    Whew!

Traorin hacked up blood upon the ground as he struggled to his feet. The Ragesian soldier had already moved on to attack his comrads, leaving the dragonborn to writhe on the floor. Traorin estimated that a few of his ribs were broken, he could hear Swain yelling encouragement to him, and a warm sensation seemed to go through his mid-section, knitting together the worst of the damage. He'd have to remember to thank Summer later.

It was about time this murderer learned not to count Traorin Xinskaar out of the fight so soon, he'd give him what for . . . as soon as his head stopped spinning that is.

Seeing the disgusting bute bearing down on her Titania laughs in his face. Waiting for his predictable blow Titania's eyes glow for a moment and when the axe strikes her Flaganus stares in confusion as it seems to pass right through her. To Flaganus her body appears to ripple for a moment like the surface of a pond before seeming to pop into a shower of sparkling lights. Titania steps past swain, and heads to the other side of the room leaving a faint trail of mocking laughter in her wake.
    Standard Action: Eyebite on baddie
Flaganus gets Attack of Opprotunity on Titania for ranged attack when adjacent
Flaganus attack roll: 1d20+7(Due to witchfire) = 14 Miss (yay witchfire)
    Eyebite Attack Roll:1d20+6 vs Will - 3(Areneth) = 19 Hit!
    Damage Roll: 2d6+5 = 14

Titiania is invisible to Flaganus until the start of her next turn
Move Action: Move to C2 as stealthily as possible to avoid flaganus from knowing where I went (until he can see me again at the start of my next turn obviously)
    Stealth Check: 1d20+1-5(moving more than 2 squares) = 9
Titania gains concealment from shadow walk until end of her next turn.

As the battle played out in front of him, Areneth removed himself mentally from the chaos. Focusing inward, he drew upon his drow heritage to project a beam of purple light towards Flaganus. The aura enveloped the Ragaesian, combining with the radiant glow from Summer to create a melancholy play of light. Continuing to focus, Areneth reached out to cripple his enemy's mind. Twice he tried, in quick succession. The first attack was turned away, but by refocusing his thoughts, the second attack struck home, slowly chipping away at the man's mind.

    Fallen Devil! Round 2.5

In his rage, the soldier swings his axe in a broad axe once more, sending Swain to fly out of the door. Even Summer was hit, as the burly swordsman, sliced right through the wall, causing her to stumble even deeper onto the rubble.

He turns his infuriated gaze towards the Half-Orc. "WHAT NERVE YA GOT! HITTIN' ME FROM BEHIND! TAKE THIS! RAAAGH!", he cries out, as he swings his axe twice in succession, the overwhelming force causing Dorn to fly and crash into the nearby wall. He falls onto his knees, aching at the new pains this warrior just inflicted on him.

The Ragesian soldier walks toward the gasping Dragonborn.

"AS FER YOU! LET UNCLE FLAG GIVE YOU A HUG! BWHAHAHAHA! IM'A GONNA CRUSH YOU LIKE A GRAPE!"

He picks up the large Dragonborn effortlessly. He clenches his arms around Traorin's ribs, and crushes his lungs even more. Such was the force that even Areneth outside could hear Traorin's ribs breaking. Traorin gasps out loudly, and starts feeling disoriented, as the (perhaps) last vestiges of his memory start flying by his eyes...
