Dead Island is one of the best games of the year. I never had any problems with abundant bugs. Every now and then you'd come across some minor shit, but that happens in every game. I do agree that the resort area is the best part of the game and the other areas are a major step down, but I didn't feel they were flat out awful.
As for not living up to the trailer, while I'm all in favor of a game where you chuck little girls out of hotel room windows I think something like that would be better suited for flash or iOS than for a full-priced retail game.
That wasn't even what I was expecting, but I guess some of you dudes are more apologetic about this game than I would ever be.
As far as bugs are concerned, I've honestly haven't played a more buggy mess since Sonic 2006 and that's saying a lot. However, I guess it only applies to the console versions.

I'm not being apologetic, I genuinely enjoyed it and thought it was all around awesome.
Because it was.
But I feel that way about any game that lets me apply katanas to the zombie problem.
I'm a huge Dead Rising fan myself. You just can't compare the two. One is more of an MMO the other is more of... I don't know how you'd explain Dead Rising.
Thinking about it now my personal disappointment this year was Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. How do you fuck up a game where you just shoot bugs? There wasn't even much you could fuck up to begin with!
Thinking about it now my real, personal disappointment this year was Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. How do you fuck up a game where you just shoot bugs? There wasn't even much you could fuck up to begin with!
In order for that game to work the game developer has to be in on the joke. They were not this time around.

I have the console version and I never got any bugs. But then I love both Dead Rising and Dead Island. Well, I like Dead Rising if you skip the cut scenes I mean.
man dead island may have been buggy as hell but it was still fun! weapon crafting in that game was a hundred times better than duct-taping two already weapons together. DR2 was an actual disappointment for me, as it was basically a carbon copy of DR1 with a less good story and setting.
oh and 4 player co-op in DI is a blast, nothing like 4 dudes kicking one giant zombie
It's possible the Wi-Fi version of the Vita (i.e. the version that's actually selling) is sold out and sales would be higher if they had scrapped the 3G version and just made more Wi-Fi units.
Then again, it's also possible that the Vita is getting off to a rocky start due to the high price despite having one of the stronger launch lineups we've seen.

I know there's a bigger difference between PSP/Go and DSi/XL than Vita Wifi/3G, but I still wish we could see that breakdown too.
 Um, wow. I think the takeaway here isn't just that the Vita had a crappy week, it's that the 3DS has become a goddamn monster. Seriously, every other system sold pretty weakly.
At any rate, knowing Sony (and the last-minute "hey we technically got it out before Christmas!" nature of the launch) it's entirely possible the Vita's been supply constrained, but any way you slice it this isn't looking encouraging.
I look at Duke Nuk'em being more of a case of "You get what you asked for."
Duke Nukem Forever got further balled by Bulletstorm coming out in 2011 and being everything a modern Duke Nukem game should have been. Way to show em ep, Bulletstorm!
I love Bulletstorm.
Check out The Club, created by the venerable Bizarre Creations. Bullstorm was basically The Club with more EXTREEEEME and less 'Tude.
Wow, the Vita really is fucked no? Did the original DS ever outsell the 3DS after it came out?
Not of the top of my head. But the PSP did outsell the 3DS a few weeks later. The PSP is decently strong in Japan. After the 3DS came out, Japan's charts tended to be PSP > 3DS > PS3.
But as the situation with the 3DS shows, Sony is missing that perfect storm that helped the 3DS clean up. (price drop, Mario Kart, Mario 3D, Monster Hunter). They won't react until the Western launches though.

Yes. Don't remember how often it occurred and if it happened worldwide, but I was able to find this quote from an official Nintendo press release pretty easily so it at least happened once.
Nintendo sold more than 800,000 combined hardware units in June. This includes 386,000 units of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems, 273,000 Wii™ systems and 143,000 Nintendo 3DS systems. Each product line saw double-digit growth over the previous month, and the lifetime U.S. installed base for the Wii system crossed 36 million units.
But as the situation with the 3DS shows, Sony is missing that perfect storm that helped the 3DS clean up. (price drop, Mario Kart, Mario 3D, Monster Hunter). They won't react until the Western launches though.
And while there's nothing magical about a "trifecta," the 3DS is still missing that third game in the west, something that appeals to more mature audiences, or at least obsessive role-playing types. Even if it had MH here, it wouldn't have the same effect. And I don't think Resident Evil's going to solve the problem, either.

But are mature games all that important to portable systems? The PSP had plenty of them, and aside from GTA none of them sold all that well.

Too bad because that's what I think of Dead Island. BOOM! /opinions
I can say that about this game too.
FTFY

You can even take a picture of a zombie cooter too!
It also horrifies me that you like that.
Takeaways: Nintendo consoles lock in 8 out of 10 spots, and Vita software drops out of the Top 10.

With the 4gamer info above, software on Nintendo's platforms in 16 out of 20 spots, and Vita software not even in the top 20.
Sony needs Monster Hunter bad.
The situation may be different once they launch in the US, though.
EDIT: Supply constrained, maybe?
you got a high-rez version of this?
FFXIII-2 tanking is the best Christmas gift.
It needs to be in every Industry Thread OP from now on!

Japan loves the PSP. Monster Hunter, JRPGs, and visual novels keep it floating along.
Sadly no. This is the biggest I can find and the other is of better quality.
But you can own the shirt!

I think earlier numbers were just a preview before the full release.
BTW, 3DS's second week in Japan (March 2011) was 209k, PSP's second week (Dec 2004) was 85k.
