I kinda wish they would do another character wipe for the beta. I have all 5 characters level 13 with good gear. I could just start a new character for fun but I don't think I'll do that.
Yes, this is exactly how Diablo 1 & 2, Starcraft and Warcraft 1,2,3 behaved. (Well Warcraft 1 & 2 were pre battle net, but they allowed you to spawn lan copies)
Basically this is how Blizzard rolled before they got taken over by Activision. They are a much shittier company now.
WC2 and SC both came with CDs that were Multiplayer CDs. It's not so much the Activision merger as that developers didn't really realise back then that multiplayer was profitable, for a fair few reasons (like lots of people not having access to the 'net enough for regular multiplayer to take off).
Yeah it's a different world these days. I don't think it's really fair to expect this anymore for online multiplayer games.
They could easily allow two logins from the same account/external IP into Battle.net and only allow them to play with each other, but I realize they won't. With iOS I can download to 5 devices, with PS3/psp I can install to 2 devices (used to be 5), with other consoles I can at least play locally with 2, but with the PC my only option is to buy it twice. The thing is Blizzard was a really cool company that innovated when it PC multiplayer with (map editors, custom games, multiplayer spawn cds etc) but the culture really seemed to change within the last few years. Other than Valve and indie developers, PC gaming has really started going to shit. (Most big games are either saddled with bad DRM, or are shitty console ports)
TL;DR $120 to play Diablo III with the wife isn't happening.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

Demon Hunter's rapid shots seem to desync the game for me something horrible. Anyone else seeing that bug?
Comparing licensing rules between a $2 iOS app and a $60 AAA PC game is apples and oranges.
And needing multiple copies to play together is not something new and outrageous for Blizzard games. Cracking your Warcraft 3/Diablo 2 install to play LAN games with one play disk does not count as Blizzard support. That's how Blizzard has been "rolling" for a decade.

I believe it is a known issue with the last patch or two that this and a few other abilities can desync you. You may want to post your info to the D3 Beta Forums to help them solve it (last I looked, they were asking for people's outputs when these events occurred)
Are they still sending out waves of invites? I did the initial battle.net system test, then the updated one right before the beta started, is that all that's needed still? Just want to make sure I'm still in the lottery...

Define "easily." For something that is a fringe case at best, they'd have to devote extra programming time to add this in. A cost/benefit analysis does not really come out in favor of doing so.

I'm pretty sure you have the power to cause a (personal) character wipe!
I noticed that they conveniently neglected to mention Diablo: Hellfire at all.
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Not terribly surprising. Was it even official?
It was official, but it wasn't made by Blizzard. It added a lot of stuff that was cut from the original game, as I understand it. I was a lot younger when I played it though so I hardly remember.
Regardless, my quick search tells me that they disabled its multiplayer capability in the 1.01 patch, so it didn't last very long.
Only Wizard's because Wizards are rad. Totally unbiased.
Cool, but you say from the beta client? Did I miss something or is there a hack to get to the non-beta zones in those videos? And abilities. And items.
It was "official" etc etc. They just chose to ignore it afterward for whatever reason. Plenty of games are farmed out to other developers and are still not considered null and void.

Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft, and Warcraft 2 all allowed this. Not saying that Diablo 3 should because their old games did, but it's not something Blizzard has never done either. :P

Installing "spawns" as they were called was done because they were pretty essential before battle.net to have multiple people play a LAN.
Even the hardcore players are missing the point of hardcore: It's the economy, stupid!
Without a sink to combat item inflation and the perpetuation of powerful items, softcore becomes an arms race. In a hardcore community, all those dead players take a good bit of their crap with them a good bit of the time, so items are more valuable. Finding a cool yellow is actually nice: finding a common but powerful unique like an Occy or Shako is a momentous occasion, not an, oh, hey, i can get some pgems for this!
Sure, you can play untwinked for the same thrill: which I did, of course: but you can't have an entire community based on this premise since by definition if you're untwinked youre not trading around.
There's also the small matter of HC mode generally producing a more competent and consistently mature community. Not to insinuate that hardcore players are inherently better or anything like that, just that a lot of the seriously immature players get weeded out.

I respectfully disagree, as this has not been my experience.
While my dabbling in the HC community showed me some skilled players (and these very forums are home to a number of HC enthusiasts who claim significant skill), I ran across just as many geese, trolls, spammers and other purveyors of shenanigans on those levels as I did SC games.
The heightened risk of loss might (hopefully) make them a bit more prone to attentiveness, but even that wasn't a guarantee.
[joke]Their save & exit reflexes, however, were matched by none[/joke].

Hellfire was official but the new areas were kind of awful. It's a shame because it really added a lot of great stuff to the game too. Whenver I get the itch to go back and play Diablo 1 I always install Hellfire just for all the new spells and nicities it adds. I usually skip the new dungeons :P
I don't know why they don't acknowledge it though. I mean, I guess maybe they don't want to remind people of it? It also had a bunch of lore for the Monk that was non-canon which might be confusing with Diablo 3 having a Monk class. *shrug*
Re: Wizard videos. I want to see runed Spectral Blades I seriously love that spell. It might suck on higher difficulties, I dunno, but it's so much fun.
Not sure if this is old, but here are some videos of rune effects from the beta client. Can't be less exciting than the anniversary, eh?

I've been refraining from posting those because A) they spoil a bunch of locations, and theyre all data mined and from an emulated server, not the actual beta. So a LOT of it is WIP and posting that sort of thing here is just going to give everyone the wrong idea, like it has in a lot of other places.
[joke]Their save & exit reflexes, however, were matched by none[/joke].
Funny you should joke about this. My reflexes are terribad, so I usually try to run/teleport away instead of pressing esc and clicking save and quit. I won't bail on you! Not that it'll matter in D3, since you can't exit instantly out of town. HC is a nice change of pace and has more of a party mentality I feel. In D2 at least. Maybe you can't solo Inferno whether it's sc or hc. Who knows?
I doubt they'll make it so you can't solo Inferno, period. People would complain about being cut off from content. But who knows. They still have at least 6 months to make changes!
Wow, that's even more disappointing than I anticipated.
They really need to look up the definition of "fun" in the dictionary. They clearly don't understand the concept.
I had fun watching it! The part about Condor games was neat. I hadn't read anything about the development of Diablo 1 since the interview with them in the back of the Diablo strategy guide.
Re: Wizard videos. I want to see runed Spectral Blades I seriously love that spell. It might suck on higher difficulties, I dunno, but it's so much fun.
I think Spectral Blades does one of the highest % weapon damage/overall DPS of any of the signature spells so someone out there is going to come up with an ass kicking Wizard build that uses it.

I don't mean you can't solo Inferno, like never, I mean you'd have to be ridiculously stacked if I had my way with balancing the difficulty. And who here will be able to boast that in the first few months without a ginormous credit card bill? Not me.

I love Blizzard cinematics. It's pretty much the reason I played through Warcraft III singleplayer.
Meh.

Also, mediocre stuff like that takes away valuable staff from real stuff.

Moar edit: Or was it just authorized? Is there a difference between authorized/official? Either way, lol third party.
