I beat the gatekeeper last week, but haven't even really wanted to do a nm yet. The whole endgame just seems like a ridiculous grind. "run the same 3 repeat dungeons over and over to get enough gear to run the other repeat dungeons then maybe someday you'll get into the one raid where idiots will keep screwing it up"

Welcome to MMOS, right?

Is any of the Tyler Freeborn stuff doable at lower "levels?" Come to think of it, I wonder if there are other missions that reward significant rewards but require basically no combat, sort of like running ahead with a new character to complete the first Mayan quest. I expect I'll be grinding out my newbie for a while, but I might as well game it as much as possible. There may just not be enough of a gap in mission reward for it to be worth the trouble.

Think I might have to splurge and use my freebie points to buy that double AP buff when I think I'm going to have a lot of time to level.

Many investigations are this way- especially sabotage ones, since they prefer stealth to combat. There are some exceptions however. Best way is to read up on a quest, unless you prefer not to be spoiled.

But for the most part, I'd recommend simply progressing through the zones like you normally would. You're going to end up repeating a bunch of these missions if you want to complete your wheel (I can't tell you how many times I've gone through Shadowy Forest) anyway.

True, and god forbid, but this is one of the few MMOs I've played in years where I actually enjoy questing and repeating quests, so I probably shouldn't complain. =)

*shrug* Personally I really enjoy doing 18 runs, especially with friends. And I've been doing them practically nightly for weeks. Not a chore to me at all.

I've done a fair bit of grinding, but (dungeons aside) a lot of it hasn't felt like grinding. I enjoy running through SF, doing the quests in the Carpathians, or just ignoring quests and killing vampires.

I read ages ago that they are adding a Bestiary, and along with this will be added rewards for the monster-killing achievements. Something like for killing 10,000 vampires you'll gain some sort of vampirey power. I think I'd much prefer if either it gave you a small damage boost against them / damage reduction from them, or if they wanted to make it more interesting and specialised than that, giving certain powers against those enemies, like preventing vampires from draining health and impairing you, preventing ak'ab charges from impairing you, killing filthy enemies reduces filth DoTs, that sort of thing. Giving the player vampire powers sounds... I don't know, just too piecemeal, and like most of the skills and auxiliary weapons, something that I'd never actually use.

Hmmm, just tried to find it but couldn't see a link discussing it. I know that somewhere, maybe on the official forums, one of the senior devs was discussing it and using vampires as an example of what they might do. Something about the achievements giving the powers of a vampire. It didn't sound like they'd thought it through too thoroughly at the time.

Oh, and speaking of HE NM... On the 2nd boss we used this weird strategy where one DPS was a "runner" who had to run ahead of the group and do absolutely nothing except stand in certain spots at certain times.

1. Is that actually the intended strategy to beat him?
2. If so, how the fuck did anyone figure that out the first time?

I wouldn't say its the dev intended strat to beat him, that probably involves the tank running a lot (thats how I did it the FIRST time I was in there with a group who knew absolutely nothing about what to do :) ). But its the strat that has spread through all the groups as it makes things much easier. Much like the strats of back to a wall on Eblis, someone playing rabbit on the chick with all the tyrants, or sacrificing someone to the lag demons on the lava dude.

Someone probably figured it out when one of the DPS ended up trapped behind the boss after a wipe and they discovered that the boss ran back to the tank. Or they were just trying random things... a million monkeys at a million keyboards, etc.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

Welp, focused tightly in on Fist for the first chunk of points, did most of Kingsmouth over 2 days, and healed normal Polaris twice. All good. Went to Savage Coast and though I'm doing ok, I'm rapidly realizing I really don't like fist as my primary dps weapon. Now, the only other points I'm spending are pistol right now, which means I either swap to pistol as my primary, always stay in melee range so I can use fist finishers, or I split my skill and ability points into a third focus like blood (for pistol/blood focus dps) or chaos (for fist/chaos pummeling).

I think.

It's hard to tell. I think the bottom line is that I just don't care for SC/Blue Mountain much out of all the zones. They just sort of bug me. =) Maybe I'll just put my head down and grind through them as fast as I can to get to Egypt. Or I'll just repeat Kingsmouth 47 times.

FAL was awesome getting normal groups for Polaris but I didn't get any love for the motel hell one. When I checked the add-on, only 3 people people were looking for it in normal, and they were all healers, too. Doh! Maybe this weekend will bear more fruit.

If you want a physical disc they're still available from Amazon. The digital edition can be bought at Funcoms own site.
I'd personally recommend the digital edition as you don't have to pay for freight and less money ends up in the hands of the middleman.

I doubt it. When I first attempted them, they were tough for me as well. I went back there after doing some other missions.

They are definitely one of the more annoying quests in Kingsmouth. The bots themselves are fairly hearty, the location is tightly packed, and the whole, kill me a little bit summon adds, kill me more, etc...thing is really a nuisance.

There is only one unifying factor in TSW. Anything the Orochi group does is a bad idea that should not be replicated.
This includes being anything but extremely nice when interacting with psychic children ("advancing science" is not a justification actions that pretty much sums up as "torturing children". Especially not when they're Tykebombs waiting to happen), attempting to control the Filth or entering occult warzones without the backing of some major magical firepower.

Orochi seems to be a representation of 'The Government' from the 80s horror movies about pshycic experiments, like Stephen King's Firestarter and the Akira and Genocyber animes. Though people like the two who give the polaris dungeon quest gives them some very slight redeeming features.

I'm up for tanking any normal dungeon. I found myself playing early mornings for a while, so I'm now in Shadowy Forest without having done any dungeons since HR. Having mostly ql 10 greens now I should be able to tank all the normal ones pretty well. I'll probably busy today (Saturday), but should be around on Sunday.

Since I'm now hitting ql 10 and wish to actually be a functioning Chaos/Fist tank, what kind of talisman/stat spread should I be looking into?

Yes I can. Got a huge pile of ql 10 green glyph kits and the mats to use them. Besides, I'm mostly interested in knowing what a good spread for tanks is, so that I can start working towards it when/ if I start doing elites/nms.

• Options
ironzergironzerg Registered User regular
If your plan is to just tank normal dungeons, then HP gear + build should be more than enough.

I think you could tank through normal Ankh to get some blue QL8s, which will be better than QL10 greens, then start tanking the first 3 elite dungeons to get some blue QL 10s, then work your way through the rest of the elite dungeons, then on to nightmares.

As far as actual stats, try to pair your tanking stat to your tanking weapon first (Defense for Swords, Block for Hammers, Evade for Chaos). Generally people recommend 400-600 block (to stop penetrations), and a mix of either Defense or Evade + Physical Protection.

You'll also want to carry a couple DPS talismans to help with threat, and make sure you have some +hit.

But really, until you start doing NMs and building custom gear, it's just wear what drops. Tanking normal and elite aren't difficult if you know the fights and what to interrupt.

I would change some things around here, as they aren't quite ideal. It looks like you're going with a typical eleforce stat setup, in which case if you are going to be forcing crits you don't need Critical Rating on a talisman at all, you want about 230 (3-1 glyph) on your builder weapon, and nowhere else. If you look a page or 2 back, I posted my gear layout if you want to get a better look at it. Also go higher with your hit, you want 650 at a bare minimum. 792 natural pen is a bit of a waste as you are getting into diminishing returns pretty far without even having 10.5 upgrades.

Edit: Here's an idealized build that I think I may go to that would allow for pretty easy reuse of talismans for both leach healing and tanking http://seekrit.info/Tools/Glyph_Calculator.html#W=4-1-3-1-8&H=4-0-8-0-0&F=4-0-6-0-0&N=4-0-2-0-0&Wr=4-2-2-2-8&L=4-0-6-0-0&Wa=4-0-6-0-0&O=4-0-8-0-0 To adjust slightly for leaching it would add 3 Major Healing talismans glyphed like this. http://seekrit.info/Tools/Glyph_Calculator.html#W=4-1-3-1-8&H=4-0-8-0-0&F=4-1-6-1-8&N=4-0-2-0-0&Wr=4-2-6-2-8&L=4-0-6-0-0&Wa=4-0-6-0-0&O=4-0-8-0-0 and to tank I would go with this http://seekrit.info/Tools/Glyph_Calculator.html#W=4-1-4-1-6&H=4-0-1-0-0&F=4-0-6-0-0&N=4-0-1-0-0&Wr=4-1-4-1-1&L=4-0-6-0-0&Wa=4-0-6-0-0&O=4-0-4-0-0 (Note: I don't know a lot about tanking, but that's the general rule I've seen 600+ Defense, Block, Hit may be too high, but *shrug*)

I said earlier on that Live Wire was changed from needing 5 crits to 4, because that's what the skill says in the skill wheel. However, the icon of the counter in game still says 5, and that's how it still appears to work. I don't know whether it was meant to change to 4 or what, but it appears to be a straight nerf.
