I felt as if it would look like favoritism-by-association, due to Lexxy being a "forum entity", to say this... but fuck it.
Considering what I wrote at the TOTP about shirts, the only design that I, personally, would buy and wear would be Lexxy's. Why? Firstly, it looked like an actual logo, and if I'm going to be wearing something that is connected to a "brand" I want what is on the shirt to fit the part. Secondly, as a design it looked damn clean, akin to the things I like about the blue/orange bubble PA logo itself. Now, yeah, was it as "Artistic" or "High Concept" as the others? Some yes, some no, but it would be festooned on my torso so I just want it looking nice.
yeah, the only ones I would ever wear were Erika's or Lexxy's. clean and simple.
I don't hate the winning design, but to me it was easily the least appealing of the "good" pile
I wanted to write about this when I got home but after 12 hours on the road and not a lot of sleep I think it's just gonna have to wait till tomorrow. OH WELL.

Lexxy, two things. 1) I was super happy to see you on this. You're always great. 2) Mac is cute. Do you think he would be interested in spit-roasting my boyfriend with me? He can paint me like one of your French girls.
Well, one look at the Hub threads for this show reminded me why I don't read Hub threads.

Yay, Lexxy.
Woo!
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Thanks! I don't think so, though. Pretty sure he has a ladyfriend and doesn't swing that way :c
The third episode was pretty good! A lot closer to what I'm looking for here. The ~20 minute running time was very much appreciated. Near the end I felt pretty down that someone was gonna have to leave, and even more so when it was between Alex and Katie. Alex since he seems like such a nice, positive person, and Katie since I thought her design looked great (not that she doesn't seem nice too!). I'm nervous for the next episode. It seems like it would be very odd for someone who was at the top of one third of the judges' list to go home.
It seemed weird to me that Lexxy's design got dismissed as being one of the "too safe" entries. I agree that the winning entry hit the right blend of being true to the feel of the show and innovative enough to stand out but Lexxy's looked like a pretty clear 2nd to me.
Makes me wonder how I would do under the same time constraints.
Home and rested now, so I'll try to talk a little bit about this ep and what you didn't get to see due to editing.

Erika's personal tastes aside, the PA group was really looking for brand consistency and broad appeal in addition to uniqueness and visual interest in the design. The show has the potential to bring in viewers from outside of Penny Arcade's normal fanbase, and because Strip Search as a brand is so new, the inclusion of its branding (logo, colors) is fairly vital, as was a clear representation of what the show was about. Colors can be easily changed, but the farther a design deviated from the logo and general visual look of the show, the weaker it was in the context of this competition. They also had to keep their production resources in mind, so designs that had too many delicate details suffered as well.
As I mentioned earlier, Mac's was absolutely stunning. They didn't show our group commentary, but everyone agreed. Everyone also agreed that, given their resources, it would have been better suited for a poster. The shirts were to be screenprinted, and Kiko made it very clear that such intricate illustrations would not have translated well.
Katie's is also really adorable, but suffered from a variety of downsides as well. Level of detail and color choices aside, its horizontal composition would not have translated as successfully to a t-shirt as some of the other designs. The cutesy illustration doesn't have as broad an appeal as a powerful graphic design piece, and the symbology is also a little weak as there is no indication of the plurality of the contestants or the gameshow factor.
That plurality was a plus with Nick's design, but there were ultimately some good reasons presented by the judges that explained why they didn't think his was the best choice (which I no longer remember SORRY). Mine suffered from spending too much time on thumbnails and not enough time pursuing a finished design. What I ended up presenting was acceptably finished, but I had further plans for it, like filling in what would print as white and what would show through to the color of the shirt:
Or adding a couple recognizable silhouettes:
Regardless, I still feel that Amy's had the strongest presentation and overall package. It had the logo. It used the branding colors. It represented both plurality and the spirit of competition with the length and coloration of the reaching arms. While it didn't visually tie in the comic strip aspect, I think the appeal of the design is broad enough to interest those who don't know what it is. It's very "cool" and eye-catching, so it makes a better piece of wearable marketing than a logo variation or loosely related illustration.
Anyway, wish they could have shown more of the critiques, but I totally understand the need to cut out much of what was said re: designs that weren't contentious or one of the top runners. Everyone got equal shares of attention though, the judging process was really great from a contestant's standpoint.
I feel pretty much the same as @Lexxy in regards to the judging and I'd think people with a design background or experience in making t-shirts would agree, that though Katie had a really cute design it didn't represent the brand as well as some of the others and would be difficult to pull off with a screen printing process. One thing that wasn't mentioned either that I feel was relevant is that adding a character into a shirt that isn't part of a comic or a brand can be a bit off-putting. Where is that character from? Who is it? etc etc. I felt it would have been a bit stronger if you could find a way to silhouette it and a lot easier to execute in the printing process.
My design's goal was to represent the brand, the color scheme and the idea that we start with a group of people, knocking off one at a time till a star is born. If I remember correctly, Levin and Erika both liked my design but Kiko said it reminded him too much of a circus tent... Which I believe is a valid critique. If I could go back, I'd probably change the strips to have arrows (y'know... keepin' it real with my mad graffiti background, yo.) add more comic elements while trying to not be literal. I don't think it would have been enough to beat out Amy's though. I think she really nailed it, and when I saw her design revealed, it made me wish I came up with it, because we had similar themes. Her's was just better executed.
My other favorites from the challenge were: Maki's and Lexxy's.
One thing that is tough with this competition is that in the challenges, not only are you pressed for time, but you get ONE shot at getting it right. In the real world, design doesn't work like that. Ideally it's fine-tuned between the client and the designer until the client's happy or time runs out on your deadline. There's back and forth, editing and re-editing and rarely is my first idea the best one.
On the show page, there's some really passionate people sounding off about what happened in each episode. And though I know that rule number 1 is "Don't read the comments", It's pretty cool to see people so invested in the show at such an early stage. Though, I have to agree with something Maki said the other day, it's really difficult to resist the urge to troll people.
If you need something to be exactly how you imagined you gotta make it yourself. Nobody owes you the time it takes to create a precise fulfilment of your personal vision.
edit: I've encountered more massive entitlement over the past three years than in all my life beforehand, and this corresponds precisely with the period I have spent more intensely on the internet. Pure coincidence I'm sure, but just to be safe we should probably shut down the web.
It's a fairly routine occurrence for people to try and get me fired solely because the one hundred percent free forums I am running are not precisely the kind of forums they prefer.

Porcupines only, please.
You know how sometimes you get those servers where the power button is behind a little grill so you gotta get a pen or something to push the button. Porcupines got that shit covered.

So is it the regular deal to release 2-3 a week or was that just a starting week rush to gain interest?

You won the first one.
The second one the mafia were black knights under your banner, and they won.
Woo!
I have the Hub and DnD removed from my forum listing (thanks Vanilla) and I've never regretted it.
At least the hub filters all those people that register new accounts solely to bitch into one place where they can easily be ignored.
Thanks! I don't think so, though. Pretty sure he has a ladyfriend and doesn't swing that way :c
Seriously, during the whole "people walk in the door" bit one of my main thoughts was "oh no I like all these people".
