You know how Melee has a mechanic that lets you reduce landing lag, commonly called L-canceling?
64 has it too, except it's called Z-canceling. And it removes landing lag. Link's down air is not a liability. People can break shields with Mario's down air.
And also there's the whole "Oh you got hit by Jiggs/Pikachu put down your controller cause you lost a stock"
No one who has showed up to any of these events is even near that level, as I said, we're not going to have anyone on Isai's level here.

Also it's called smooth landing.
Apparently I play a different smash game haha. I don't even know these words.
Smash 64 is a terrible, terrible competitive game. Did you know that if you block a forward smash from Kirby in that game, you can't punish him? Not only can you not punish him, but you are stuck in your shield for so long that he can keep attacking you and actually break your shield before you can do anything. What a fucking game.
Yeah, the shield stun in Smash 64 is absolutely absurd. And there are things i think any character can do to get a full stun to break combo. I know i'll more than likely be using the board the platforms or break the target modes for it over an actual fight, though im not ruling out the possibility. I mainly have to figure out which modes will be used from which games.
Did brawl have a 2 player home-run contest? I know Smash 4 does. (it does have this right?)
I just faced a guy on For Glory who did nothing but escape from me. Even on Sudden Death, he won because he held on to the edge and then let go when the bombs started exploding. I didn't think they'd hit me if I did the exact same thing as him, but I didn't know when they'd start appearing....

Did you know if block basically any down air drill move the same thing happens?
Blocking in the game can be a death sentence.

Is it too late to be excited that I finally found a gamecube adapter? Now I can finally use my Wavebird! Not sure why, but they seemed slower in being restocked in Canada.
Yep, they are quite common now. Only about 8 months late (which allowed 3rd parties to get in), but hey, at least they're available now.
On another subject, I feel like we really need separate buttons for Ryu's special moves. So often if I whiff a move that puts the opponent at my back, if you input the same move in the opposite direction, you get an unexpected special heading the wrong way. For example, if I do the street fighter input for the dragon punch, then try to do to a reverse dragon punch or fireball, I get a hurricane kick heading in the wrong direction. Really annoying since you don't feel in control.
So the gamestop that we've been hosting various tournaments at will be closing at the end of the month, and we have an opportunity to do a final smash event!
Currently I want to do something way out of the box, and my current idea is to base it off the Nintendo world championships event and how they did some of it. It'll basically end up being triple elimination, which might sound excessive, but here's what I'm thinking so far:
The first rounds will he various games of smash 4, mainly depending on player count, but ealy on it'll probably be 8 man smash, hopefully 4v4, if not then 2v2v2. People who get defeated will drop to a lower tier and they will play an older smash game. After some of those players get eliminated, they'll go down to the final tier which they will have to play some kind of event to stay alive. This will include things like trophy rush, home run contest, break the targets, or one of melee's event matches. I've also considered some player made types of special smash games, like Smash Fighter (flat custom levels with smash balls on, stamina mode, to simulate street fighter a bit more)
The other smash games will be project m, melee, and smash 64. I'll spare anyone from brawl.
If anyone has any suggestions for me regarding a tournament like this, let me know. As I really want this last one at this location to be a uniquely fun one.
Why do you feel the need to keep multiple versions of the game running? Just stick to Smash for Wii U.
Mostly because of interest in having more melee/pm events. We start with some PM, and it to this day is my favorite smash, along with a few of my friends who would love to see it show up again. We've done some Smash 4 only, and that was the original plan, but I don't think smash 4 alone would warrant anything special like i have in mind. As of right now, this might be the very last tournament we run for a while, so I want to cover a lot of what I know people have voiced interest in.
It still seems overly complicated to me, but to each their own. Personally I'd stick to one game, be it SSB, Melee, Brawl, or SSB4, and go with that. Jumping around between consoles and games seems like more trouble than its worth.
Having multiple games is the standard for most smash tourneys.

Guess it's too soon to hope for new character reveals, huh? It sounds like Mewtwo/Ness/Roy/Ryu were all done in a pre-planned batch, and it'll take them a while to bring the top vote-getters to life.

Yea, I think it'll be a couple months before they reveal the first of the ballot voted characters.
I'm holding out hope that we'll get an Inkling and Mike Jones.
I'd say that having characters show up as costumes are, at this point, probably a big hint we won't be getting them as characters, but Sakurai does whatever he damn well pleases.
Rolling, spot-dodging, and air-dodging consume 10 points of shield. (Presently, shields take about 52% worth of damage before they break.)
Attempting to roll or spot-dodge with insufficient shield causes the character to trip instead.
Attempting to air-dodge with insufficient shield causes the character to tumble as though footstooled.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Huh
I'm not sure how that would work in context but as an idea it's pretty interesting
The main goal there is to fix the perceived problem of excessively powerful defense in the game. (Don't fixate too much on the exact amount of shield consumed. Variables are variables.) It is certainly possible to reliably punish rolls and air-dodges in this game. In actual practice, the ratio between invulnerable frames and recovery frames is extremely high, to the extent that an intermediate player, particularly with the lag introduced by online play, typically finds that attacking an aware opponent is a losing proposition. Furthermore, since your shield is regenerating during dodge rolls and so on, a strong player can interleave full shields and dodges such that getting hit is really only ever their own fault. By attaching a cost to dodges, you remove the efficacy of long-term defense because no matter whether you shield or dodge, you will eventually run out of defense points and eat an attack.
... it's kind of frustrating having the developers so distant. It's a mechanic that could easily be patched in (or, to be less presumptuous, implemented quickly in a test build and evaluated for viability), but how the hell would one get it to Sakurai's ears?

They're pretty much in stock everywhere it seems, including Amazon.
Hell you can even buy it directly from Nintendo's online store.
