Two years ago this month I made my last film thread OP, in which I urged everyone to expand their horizons by watching older movies which, thanks to streaming sites and the internet, are more available now than they've ever been. And you responded! By talking a lot about John Wick.

So this time, leave your horizons where they are... but screw the rest, watch only the best. If a movie's not making you happy, if it's not blowing your fucking mind or comforting you like nothing else can, turn that shit off and go find something better. Like the best fight scene ever put on film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RwaptQ_rpU

Or the best musical number in all of cinema:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSZxmZmBfnU

Or the scariest moment:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atjhOhH-V3E

Or the funniest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0sgTkRSljA

Or the saddest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOoWpTxKJGA

Or the most exciting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr-8AP0To4k

Or the most awe-inspiring:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z33-qOXOWS4

The best beginning:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyaj2P-dSi8

and the best ending:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFkryh6hC-k

and everything in between.

Turn the knobs up to 11 or find another hobby, people. Prequels and thirdquels and remakes and generic superhero movies need not apply. This is cinema, and it is so capable of the extraordinary that you should never accept anything less. Go and do likewise, gentlemen, because this is your movie thread.

Transformers: Age of Extinction was the best movie of 2014.

Transformers: Age of Extinction was the best fourth installment of a franchise based on action figures directed by Michael Bay in 2014

I'm going to celebrate the shiny new movie thread by continuing a discussion from the old one!

I am completely cynical about the reasons for hyping Ghostbusters as Wymynbusters, but I think the chosen tack for promotion has dick to do with how they're going to approach the actual filmmaking. Wiig and McCarthy are capable of being awesome, and nobody will know anything about how this is going to play out until we see some finished footage.

And maybe not even then, since terrible trailers for good movies is a thing.

I mean, I'm skeptical that a remake of one of the best comedies of all time is going to be as good as the original, but that doesn't mean it has to be bad.

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

You know what? Egon and Spengler were huge STEM geeks in the original flicks. If Ghostbusters 3 can run with a similar "STEM is awesome" theme to Big Hero 6 - with awesomely talented ladies - then I am totally on board.

In case anybody was unclear, the point was for people to disagree with me. Hell, for most of those I disagree with me. And if you'll look closely, after a long, fruitless period searching Youtube for the funniest scene ever I gave up and nominated the entirety of His Girl Friday.

(If Youtube had had the whole thing, I might have gone with the entire end(s) of Clue, though.)

I'll have to rewatch Russian Ark at some point, but when I saw it way back when it was on at the cinema I hated it with a fury that I rarely feel for any film. I found it aggressively boring, and I'm saying that as someone who considers, say, 2001 and Stalker riveting and engaging throughout. After half an hour I tried to will myself to sleep, but that failed, so I sat there seething. I don't even know why the film had that effect, because boredom isn't something that comes easily to me, and I wonder whether my reaction had that much to do with Russian Ark - but as it is, it's the one film that I've had that kind of viscerally negative reaction to.

Oh, and I wanted to voice my mandatory complaints about the (otherwise great) OP's terrible US-centricity. Which suffer somewhat from my inability to provide non-US alternatives. Meh. I'll go stand in the corner and read my Jules et Jim Criterion booklet.

The heavyweight champ of disturbing films I've seen is Un Chien Andalou, and I'm so squeamish about movies now that I'll probably never watch anything that can top it.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a better one that's for sure.

From what I've heard Whiplash's climax is incredible. I haven't seen it yet though.

I like The Good the Bad and the Weird's climax, it's not that great but it is a surprisingly literal climax to the film. I'd post it, but it's fairly average and loses a lot without the rest of the film in front of it. All climaxes do, but the thing that makes it so good IMO relies on plot and expectations that are set up earlier. I wouldn't rank it near the top of any list of climaxes but it worth mentioning.

The technically best climaxes are the kind that serve as the final argument of the film, summarizing up the film in one scene. Hmm, that might not be right. How about, 'the best are the ones that I like.' Done.

edit, ok not done. For me there is no best climax, because a climax can be many things. Even an anti-climax is a climax. And I don't feel like I can compare a film that ends with a climax and a film that ends on an anti-climax. I don't think I can even compare OUTW and GBU.

And damn I'm all emotional after watching the Once Upon a Time in the West final duel. The Good the Bad and the Ugly duel is my preference, but it dissipates all the tension instantly after it's over. OUTW lets the tension and emotions linger.

Changing the subject, can anyone sell me on Rooney Mara? I've only seen a handful of things she's been in, but I find her exceedingly blank and nondiscript. Her sister, Kate, on the other hand, is pretty great.

Interestingly, Lucasfilm has tested both of them for the female lead in one of the Star Wars one-off flicks, as well as Tatiana Maslany. I really, really hope they go with Maslany; that girl is fucking brilliant.

  • ThirithThirith Registered User regular
Huh. I quite liked Rooney in her small part in The Social Network and in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I'm not a fan of the latter, but I thought it was well crafted and enjoyable enough), but I found Kate utterly dull on House of Cards, but then I think the latter is one of the most hollow yet successful pop culture products of the last few years. Perhaps I just need to see Kate in different material.

Maslany is interesting and very compelling, but I very much hope that the writing in Orphan Black improves or that she'll get better material elsewhere.

That's my primary point of contention with it. Ghostbusters 2 laid the groundwork (and was built on by the cartoons) that supernatural activity waxes and wanes, and there are dry periods. It would be super simple to say there was a twenty year long dry period. You don't even need to show any of the OG Busters, maybe mention "I based this on the Spengler-Stanz Wibbly Wobbly Theory".

Will it be a new set up though? This isn't universal, but the temptation to cover old scenes, setpieces and jokes from the original is methinks greater in a reboot than a sequel.

Maslany doesn't receive a fraction of the recognition she deserves for her work on Orphan Black. Considering what she's asked to do on that show and how she manages to do it so well, it's p. bullshit.

In all respects that matter, I don't think that reboot vs. sequel is altogether relevant to the quality of the end result. You can have a creative, funny reboot or sequel as much as you can have a creatively bankrupt, utterly derivative, dead-in-the-water reboot or sequel. It's not whether the film is the one or the other that will determine the quality of the script or the performances, as far as I'm concerned.
