I'm Not Sorry [Feminism]

UsagiUsagi NahRegistered User regular
So I actually meant to post this on Sunday, because it was International Women's Day!

But perhaps it's more important in the aftermath to keep things moving and our anger fresh, since it's frosted bullshit that my first Google search hit for "feminism" is an article about Joss Whedon, the second is a link to a Women Against Feminism blog, and we're just not going to touch on what the GIS return looks like.

And as I said in the first thread--I thought about noting that we should be polite here, but fuck that. This is an angry topic, a painful and personal topic close to many of our hearts and lives, so politeness really doesn't have a place as things get heavy and difficult. But please, be respectful or I will end you.

So, who wants to be a Feminazgul? (art by @Tam because he's amazing)

Recently someone "jokingly" mentioned my "Feminazi" beliefs, and it was only being able to respond with "Actually I prefer FemiNazgul." that kept the comment from totally ruining my day.

    This is a good thread.

Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.

So the thread title was inspired by a conversation I recently had with @Liiya about how we as women often feel like it's necessary to apologize for a vast and sundry number of things that are, actually, not our fault

From a surprisingly relevant Time article:
Sorry is a crutch — a tyrannical lady-crutch. It’s a space filler, a hedge, a way to politely ask for something without offending, to appear “soft” while aking a demand. It falls in the same category as “I hate to ask” or “I know this is a stupid question” or another version of “No offense, but” or ending your statements with a question. It’s bled into our text messages (“sorrrrrryy!!!!!!”), our emails (“SO SORRY for the delay”), our emoji (you know, the bashful “eeek” face), and our workplaces. Even the rise of “sorry-not-sorry” — a joke, and hashtag, that implies I’m saying sorry but I don’t really mean it — is couched in apology. (Can’t we even own the apology–or the insult?!)

So the thread title is my mantra--I'm not sorry for interrupting you interrupting me, I'm not sorry for asking for something I need or deserve, I'm not sorry for being right, and most importantly: I'm not sorry that you choose to interpret my confidence and badassery as 'being a bitch' and respond by being intimidated and a petty shitwizard.

Note, I'm not saying that as an attempt to reframe the issue or argue that it's not a feminist problem--it definitely is. It's just one that I can personally identify with.

That's a toooon of media from the 80's, honestly. I know things aren't necessarily great for women still, but we've come a long way in awareness, at least, since then.

It's really opened my eyes to what a not-great person Dan Akroyd is. Like I know there's been plenty of evidence before this, but nothing I'd really paid attention to. But some of his comments about that movie... yeesh.

Like the "Man With No Name" trilogy. The protagonist is a murderer, rapist, and drunkard, and is written to be the hero!

Whoa, really? What did he say?

In this instance its not so much that he's said something specifically, it's that he's been pushing his personal Ghostbusters rewrite for almost fifteen years and is mooching the attention of the all-female reboot

Because you know an all-male, Aykroyd-backed, Channing Tatum-starring Brobusters is going to be a marketing juggernaut that's going to steamroll over Paul Feig's Ladybusters

I apologize far too much. I am also expecting people to flip the fuck out when I make a mistake though.

In my new job I'm expected to drive a forklift and be able to lift heavy boxes. I need to figure out a good and polite comeback for the next time someone says,
Atta girl!" that does not involve impaling people with a forklift.

http://www.avclub.com/article/dan-aykroyd-determined-make-conventional-all-dan-a-215487 is all I can find off-hand, but basically he's one of the underminers of the reboot. I think more out of pro-Akroyd sentiment than specifically anti-woman sentiment but it's not great either way.

In the article I linked, national treasure Sean O'Neal deconstructs said mooching pretty greatly. The comments section is also a fun read of other suggestions for Akroyd revivals.

I found some stuff on Salon too where he says that while the script for the female Ghostbusters is good and needed he's going to take it and make it better.

By making it all male apparently.

Try responding with some response that infantilizes them or something? "Thanks, sport" or "little buddy" maybe? Although knowing that sort of guy, they'll probably just assume it's a come-on...
