(For
@Zen Vulgarity's benefit, the rule of thumb I personally follow is the primary nominee gets ten minutes, then the backup gets another five. Then it's free for all)
So this week, during the anticipated lifetime of this thread, the new film
Avengers: Age of Ultron will start being released to general viewing.
Setting aside what I think of it, I've made a decision not to post detailed discussion of it in [chat] threads until at least it comes out in the US. Not even behind spoiler tags, for sometimes you can click on the wrong thing and whoops it was set in modern times after all!
So until such times, I propose that my fellow Euros and Ozzies keep discussion of the film to the dedicated MCU thread, as a courtesy to our Western Hemisphere-dwelling friends? You don't have to abide by this suggestion, I have no power to mandate this and don't believe that I do, and maybe you think spoiler tags are enough to avoid accidental spoilage, but I thought it would be nice to be extra sure.
In return, a language lesson!

Good afternoon, good evening and goodnight!
There is no reason why you should look at another human being and be certain that your image of the world is more accurate than theirs. Act on your own beliefs, yes, prevent harm if you believe harm will occur, but you should always acknowledge that you could be incredibly, incredibly wrong about everything.
CAN YOU PLEASE STOP MAKING ME LOOK BAD IN FRONT OF MY FRIENDS

The difference being I am completely fine with my beliefs turning out to be incorrect. I may resist, or be skeptical, as is human nature, but I'll defer to the evidence (or at least ideally I will).
I don't see any reason I need to give equal credence to beliefs based on scientific discovery and beliefs based on mythology. I'm not going to be a dick about it or anything, because that's a waste of everyone's time, but I absolutely do not consider the two to be equal.
And so, yeah, I don't have any respect for religious belief. I don't particularly care if someone is religious, so long as they aren't advocating harmful things, or teaching their children not to think critically, or whatever.
I don't see why I should. It's not the same thing as accepting scientific consensus by any means outside of a specious correlation that we are "taking on faith" the word of experts. I can find out for myself (given training and resources) if the findings of a scientific inquiry are true or not. I can not do the same thing for a religious decree. That I accept what experts tell me about science does not mean I am blindly believing something -- it's just not feasible to go back and retest every fact I'm presented.
